Hello Pre-Law Members,

The nomination period for the Executive Board election is officially open! Serving on the board is an excellent opportunity to gain leadership experience on campus, work alongside an amazing group of like-minded peers, build professional connections, and have fun along the way.

To run for an Executive Board position, you must:

1. Receive a nomination endorsement from another active member of the Pre-Law Society.

2. Submit a platform explaining what you bring to the role.

Please find below the position descriptions of each executive position: 

President

• Oversees all committees

• Develops and manages projects

• Sets the objectives for the semester and year

• Presides over executive and general body meetings

• Makes express decisions on behalf of the entire PLS when the E-board is unable to confer on a matter of urgency.

• Lead facilitator of events (Spring Law School Admissions Panel, Expungement Clinics, Law School/Firm Visits, etc.)

Vice President

• Assumes the role of President if necessary

• Cochairs all committees with the President

• Co-manages recruitment activities with the President

• Co-develops and manages projects alongside the President

• Co-creates fun general body meetings and events in partnership with the Events Coordinator

Treasurer

• Sets the budget for upcoming semesters

• Attends SGA Finance Board meetings as needed

• Maintains contact with appropriate SGA personnel

• Tracks and optimizes semesterly budget / expenditure

• Ensures adequate funding for events, trips, and other opportunities

Secretary

• Creates visuals for each General Body Meeting

• Manages attendance tracking for Executive and General Body Meetings

• Takes minutes at every Executive Board Meeting (and general body meetings when appropriate)

Public Relations Chair: Social Media

• Promotes meetings and events online

• Leads content creation for all communication platforms (Email, myUMBC, GroupMe, Instagram)

• Keeps our membership lists (Google Groups & myUMBC) up to date – if vacant, duties revert to the Secretary.

Public Relations Chair: Events Coordinator

• Develops and manages General Body agendas

• Leads the planning of legal and law-themed events to strengthen membership

• Stays informed about UMBC campus events that align with Pre-Law Society’s mission and shares them with members

PLEASE NOTE:
1. For the positions of President, Vice President, and Treasurer, candidates must have been active members for at least one academic year. You may submit a platform for up to two positions! 

2. To be a candidate for President or Vice-President, you must be nominated by a member of the current 2024-2025 executive board.

The platform submission form will be open for one week, closing on Friday, April 18th. Voting will take place the following week, with ballots closing on Friday, April 25th at 11:59 PM. Election results will be announced on Monday, April 28th.

We encourage all members to consider running for a position or nominating fellow members who exemplify leadership, dedication, and commitment to PLS’s mission!

Culture building is the intentional process of developing and nurturing a set of shared values, beliefs, and practices within an organization or community. Culture builders are actors who intentionally seek to foster a positive and productive environment.

Especially during times of deep societal polarization and loss of shared humanity, an inclusive and equitable culture benefits and requires everyone; we all have a role to play in building the culture we want to see.

The new Culture Builders series will host a community conversation each semester focused on connecting community and culture across difference. The series is designed to engage topics and ideas grounded in shared community values, beliefs, and practices that pull us closer to a more loving and just campus. Join us for engaging lectures and community dialogues.

Inaugural Culture Builders Speaker: Kazu Haga

Kazu Haga is a trainer, educator, student, and practitioner with over 25 years of experience in nonviolence and restorative justice. He weaves in lessons from decades of Buddhist practice and trauma healing work to advance social change and collective healing. 

20 participants will be randomly selected to receive a copy of Haga's 2025 book: Fierce Vulnerability: Healing from Trauma and Emerging through Collapse or a copy of Haga's 2020 book: Healing Resistance: A Radically Different Response to Harm.
