The CNMS Scholars Program at UMBC is a selective undergraduate initiative designed to support talented individuals interested in the advancement of women students in the sciences. This prestigious program is being sponsored by the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences (CNMS) at UMBC to provide comprehensive support to students pursuing majors where women are still underrepresented, specifically: mathematics, statistics, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, and bioinformatics/computational biology. The program will connect high-potential students to a community of designated faculty mentors and a myriad of campus support services in an effort to facilitate their academic success in these rigorous majors. CNMS Scholarships are for one year and could be renewable annually for up to two additional years, in accordance with funding availability and meeting program requirements as defined in an award agreement.

The application process includes uploading an application letter to the selection committee with an essay that covers three topics, as well as the submission of academic transcripts and a resume.

All applicants to the CNMS Scholars Program must have and maintain:

• Status as a full-time student at UMBC
• A minimum UMBC cumulative 3.0 grade point average
• Declared major in one of the following STEM disciplines: mathematics, statistics, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, and bioinformatics/computational biology
• Demonstrated interest and commitment to the advancement of women in the identified STEM disciplines
• Compliance with all requirements and expectations of the CNMS Scholars Program
• Good-standing status throughout the University

The selection for the new cohort of scholars is open until May 05, 2025.

As part of its Spring 2025 Humanities Forum, the Dresher Center for the Humanities will host the “Empathy Machines: Podcasting and the Public Radio Structure of Feeling” lecture on Wednesday, April 23, presented by Jason Loviglio, associate professor of media and communication studies. This talk will explore the migration of the public radio “structure of feeling” as it migrated into narrative podcasting over the last two decades. Register for the event here. 

The Annual Eckert Lecture on Health and Inequality lecture series returns on Thursday, April 24, with the “Recovering from the Opioid Epidemic in Baltimore and Beyond” lecture. This lecture centers on the multifaceted nature of the opioid epidemic with an emphasis on recovery efforts in Baltimore City and other Maryland communities. The panelists will weigh in on the nature and impact of the local opioid crisis, understanding and treating opioid addiction, and efforts to prevent opioid misuse. Learn more about the event here. 

Kelley Bell, associate professor of visual arts, will premiere her latest project “Fantastic Village” at the Baltimore Museum of Art as a part of the museum’s 2025 Baker Artist Awards exhibition, on display beginning April 27 through July 27. Bell was a 2024 recipient of the Baker Artist Award, which was created to support artists and promote greater Baltimore as a strong creative community.
