What does the Director of Special Projects & Flagship Initiatives do?  

The Director of Special Projects & Flagship Initiatives is responsible for overseeing, advising, and mentoring the leaders of SGA's most important initiatives including (but not limited to) Prove It! and Election Night Extravaganza. They will facilitate meetings, set strategies for large scale projects, and develop plans to sustain these initiatives for the foreseeable future.   

What are the time commitments for the Director of Special Projects & Flagship Initiatives? 

The regular time commitments of the Director of Special Projects & Flagship Initiatives greatly vary. During peak times, the Director should expect an intense workload (ex: November 6th is Election Night Extravaganza, Prove It! election is in the Spring), and a moderate to heavy work load leading up to the implementation of the project itself. However, SGA work should not get in the way of self-care time and studying for your classes - you come first! 

What do you get in return as the Director of Special Projects & Flagship Initiatives? 

This is the perfect opportunity to make your mark on the UMBC community, and work with students, faculty, staff, and administrators to make meaningful change for years to come. This update will be applied to UMBC’s Blackboard site over the August 2-3 weekend. 

The new Ultra base navigation presents courses on a dedicated landing page called Courses. The Current Courses section allows easy access to Blackboard shells that are continuously open or currently open. After the early August update, term-specific subsections will appear at the top of the page, listed according to the dates assigned in Blackboard based on UMBC’s academic calendar. Additional tools are available to filter, search, or navigate to other terms.

PAL: Privacy-Enhancing AI and Language Technologies

AAAI Spring Symposium
25-27 March 2019, Stanford University

This symposium will bring together researchers in privacy and researchers in either artificial intelligence (AI) or human language technologies (HLTs), so that we may collectively assess the state of the art in this growing intersection of interests. Privacy remains an evolving and nuanced concern of computer users, as new technologies that use the web, smartphones, and the internet of things (IoT) collect a myriad of personal information. Rather than viewing AI and HLT as problems for privacy, the goal of this symposium is to “flip the script” and explore how AI and HLT can help meet users’ desires for privacy when interacting with computers.

It will focus on two loosely-defined research questions:

The symposium will consist of invited speakers, oral presentations of submitted papers, a poster session, and panel discussions. This event is a successor to Privacy and Language Technologies (“PLT”), a 2016 AAAI Fall Symposium. Submissions are due 2 November 2018.  For more information, see the symposium site.
