UMBC’s Princeton Review profile speaks directly to the dedication and commitment of the university’s faculty and staff. One student reflects that UMBC is “a university where teaching comes first.” Another says, “UMBC wants to see every student succeed—they provide you with the tools, people, and resources to make sure you get where you want to go in life.”

Katharine H. Cole, vice provost and dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs, agrees. Reflecting on the qualities highlighted by Princeton Review, she says:

UMBC provides a welcoming, enriching environment in which all undergraduate students learn to collaborate, study effectively, and engage in high impact, meaningful experiences that promote academic success. The strength and diversity of our curricular and undergraduate research experiences coupled with the dedication of our faculty as instructors and mentors, creates a culture of innovation and excellence and provides students with a distinctive undergraduate experience.

After completing his UMBC degree, Ocasio began a Ph.D. in environmental engineering at UC Berkeley.

The profile also notes UMBC’s location between Baltimore and Washington, DC, as a major advantage, giving student access to arts and culture, and a broad range of learning and career opportunities. As one undergrad says, “The location of UMBC is true brilliance.”

New to the profile this year is a mention of UMBC’s rank as third nationally in invitations for theatre students to perform at the prestigious Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. Earlier this summer, choreographer Maia Schechter ‘18, dance, was invited to showcase her original piece Now Elsewhere at the Kennedy Center.

Princeton Review also spotlights the importance of diversity, inclusion, and supportive community at UMBC. UMBC’s profile notes that students feel diversity “enriches our school and everyone gets to know everyone” across racial, ethnic, and cultural identities.

Princeton Review profiles for The Best 384 Colleges are based on surveys of 138,000 students nationwide.

studies courses at the undergraduate level, a sub-specialty in Latinx or
Indigenous sovereignty, human rights, and/or violence, a promising research
agenda, a commitment to and experience in fostering inclusive excellence, and a
Ph.D. in Gender/Women’s Studies or a closely related interdisciplinary field at

UMBC is a dynamic mid-sized public research
university that values undergraduate teaching and student mentoring. With over
13,500 undergraduate and graduate students, the campus reflects the wealth of
ethnic and cultural diversity of the Baltimore-Washington region. The Gender
and Women’s Studies Department at UMBC is an interdisciplinary academic unit
committed to transnational and intersectional understandings of how gender and
its intersections with race, nation, class, religion, and sexuality make a
difference in individual lives and in the practices and institutions of human
societies and cultures. The program has five faculty lines and more than 30 affiliate
faculty. It enrolls approximately 70 undergraduate students divided among its
undergraduate major, certificate, post-baccalaureate certificate, and critical
sexuality studies minor programs and is one of eight participating departments
and programs in the Language, Literacy and Culture Ph.D. program. UMBC is
especially proud of the diversity of its student body and we seek to attract an
equally diverse applicant pool for this position. Underrepresented groups
(e.g., racial, ethnic, sexual minorities), women, veterans, and individuals
with disabilities are encouraged to apply. The campus and department are
    committed to increasing faculty diversity.

DoIT Begins Changes to myUMBC

<Tagline>New mobile-friendly, cloud-hosted design</Tagline>

This fall we will begin the process of rolling out a new version of myUMBC. This new version is being built from the ground up using the latest technology, including cloud-based hosting in Amazon, to meet the university’s evolving needs for communication, community, and collaboration.

A new design that's more modern and mobile-friendly

A updated Profile with more personal data from more sources around campus

A redesigned Start page that brings a focus back to the community

An updated Guide featuring personalized content and resources

A new Events section making it easier to find things to do

Roll Out Plans

This isn’t a small undertaking so we’re going to be tackling the upgrade of myUMBC in stages over the next year.

Aug 13 - Launch the new Start page and updated Profile

Aug 15 - 17 - Launch the updated Guide for students

Aug 22 - 24 - Launch the updated Events page

Aug 24 - myUMBC features frozen for the start of classes with no major changes

Late September - Launch new Step-by-Step Registration Guide for undergraduates

Please note: These plans (except for the Aug 24 feature freeze) may change based on feedback or any technical problems that arise.

Last year, Campus Portal Architect Collier Jones held monthly “myUMBC Tips, Tricks and Future Plans” meetings to preview upcoming changes. He also met with several groups including Student Affairs, SGA, Enrollment Management, OIA and others, and future myUMBC workshop sessions will be announced after the start of the semester and initial launch of the new version.

Why is This Happening?

The short version is myUMBC has evolved and is outgrowing itself.

The current iteration of myUMBC launched in Fall 2009 with a fresh (at the time) look and new features like groups, community news and events, and the Topics menu. Over the past few years we’ve added new features to meet the university’s needs by integrating into departmental websites, automatically enrolling people into groups based on university data, and providing a suite of communications tools utilizing the web, email, and the UMBC app, all of which have been extremely successful. We’ve also recently been able to start using live data from systems like PeopleSoft to start to create a new Profile for students to reduce the need to jump between different systems to find information.

Two years ago, we updated the Start page to be a feed of updates from your groups as a way to be more “personal.” With that change we lost a lot of the community aspects of myUMBC that made it a great way to feel connected. Our overall aesthetic and usability, especially our mobile experience, has also lagged far behind what is expected. Finally, there are a ton of new features we want to build, but the current infrastructure just doesn’t allow us to do that.

We know this will be a big change for the community, and we appreciate your patience with any bumps along the way. Please know that we will be watching things closely and doing our best to quickly fix problems as they come up.
