Dr. Ruey-Hung Chen joins the Mechanical Engineering Dept August 13, 2018 by Megan Hanks

Dr. Ruey-Hung Chen has been named the new chair of the mechanical engineering department. Dr. Chen joins UMBC after serving as department head and Robert Myers Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at New Mexico State University. 

His research focuses on combustion, propulsion, pollutant emissions of combustion systems, heat and mass transfer, and fire retardation for composite materials. 

As chair of mechanical engineering, Dr. Chen will work to strengthen relationships with national laboratories and funding agencies, and increase opportunities for faculty to receive research funding. 

He will also work with colleagues to enhance the mechanical engineering graduate program to create a pipeline of talent for national agencies and laboratories.

Dr. Chen plans to review the current curriculum and work with mechanical engineering faculty to develop expertise in the area of autonomy and autonomous systems.

On Friday, August 17th starting at 1pm LDAP-Master and Webadmin will be taken down for system maintenance.  During this time account creations and password changes will be unavailable.  Account authentication and logins will not be affected during this downtime.  


The maintenance window will allow staff to apply needed security and application updates.  The outage window is expected to last two hours with services being restored by 3pm on Friday, August 17th.

As part of our ongoing commitment to security, the Unix & Windows Infrastructure groups will be conducting quarterly system patching on Thursday, August 16th and Friday, August 17th.  While many of the systems will be patched without any service disruption, there are some systems which require the downtime of key services.  The schedule below outlines which key services will be offline and for how long.

Thursday, 8/16/2018 between 8pm and midnight:
