<Title>Invested in the Arts &#8212; Grants Help Alumni Artists Thrive</Title>
<Body>

<p><span>As UMBC artists interpret the world around them through photography, music, and other media, the world is taking notice. In the last few months alone, a number of alumni artists have won prestigious awards to celebrate and nurture their work. Here, we take a look at three of them: Baker Artist Award-winning musician </span><strong>Lafayette Gilchrist ‘92</strong><span>, Africana studies; </span><span>Julia Margaret Cameron Award-winning photographer </span><strong>Diana Nicholette Jeon</strong><span>, M.F.A. ‘06, IMDA; and UMBC professor </span><strong>Eric Dyer ‘95</strong><span>, visual and performing arts, an inaugural </span><span>Merriweather District Artist-in-Residence.</span></p>

    <h4>Lafayette Gilchrist ‘92</h4>

<p><span>As pianist and composer <strong>Lafayette Gilchrist</strong> plays, his fingers glide up and down the keyboard. As he tells Maryland Public Television in an interview celebrating the announcement of his Baker Artist Award this spring, “When it’s working, and when it all comes together, it is a transcendent experience.”</span><span> Gilchrist, who in addition to his solo work leads two bands, has been wowing audiences near and far with his work for years, and was delighted to learn of the Baker honor, as it will help him continue to <a href="https://www.facebook.com/LafayetteGilchristMusic/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">compose, perform, and record.</a></span></p>

<p><span>“I was surprised and honored,” he said, “as a Baltimore-based artist laboring in the vineyards for quite a few years, often taking more losses than wins in order to keep the band afloat and get the music out. The award means a great deal to me because it’s confirmation in many ways that it’s been worth it.”</span></p>

    </div>

    <h4>Diana Nicholette Jeon, M.F.A. ’06</h4>

<p>When she learned she had won the Julia Margaret Cameron Award for photography this summer, <strong>Diana Nicholette Jeon</strong> said she was pleasantly surprised, but pleased to see her work among that of so many other fine women photographers (the focus of the award). Working from her home in Hawaii, she credits her time in the IMDA program at UMBC — and the professors she learned from — for broadening her skills and pushing her to explore new facets of her work. She describes <a href="http://diananicholettejeon.com" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">her photography</a> this way:</p>

<blockquote><p>I use my work to process my emotions about a specific event or series of events, to give voice to those emotions so that others may “hear” them, too. Some comes directly from negative experiences in my personal life, such as my <em>I, Orfeo</em> project. Others comment on social, political and/or cultural issues, such as war, women’s issues, or issues arising from living in a island paradise living off tourism and suffering from how others romanticize the islands and our peoples. Some of my work is considered more straight photo, and others are heavily manipulated, both on the iPad and with encaustic and traditional media on top of the print (the latter would be best represented by my <em>Self-Exposure</em> series.)</p><p>I believe the most interesting space in photography today is where the artist can combine digital techniques with hand-worked processes to produce one-of-a-kind works. I work in multiple kinds of media. I believe that materials have mana, so whenever possible I use the media that I feel lends the most meaning to any given project.</p></blockquote>

<p><em>Nights as Inexorable as the Sea, Volume 3. </em>(2017) Sculptural Book Object – iPhone photos, archival pigment prints on Hanhemuhle Baryta paper, Altoids tins bottoms, cold wax</p>

<p><em>Resistance Girl</em> (<em>Self-Exposure</em> series.) (2017) composited iPhoneography with iPad painting and drawing, pigment print on Hahnemuhle Photo rag Ultrasmooth, traditional drawing and painting with oils and pastels, encaustic media, cradled wood panel.</p>

    <h4>Eric Dyer ‘95</h4>

<p>Through his work as a professor at UMBC, artist <strong>Eric Dyer</strong> helps budding artists understand that “<span>animation is a young art form — there is so much more to explore and discover beyond traditional forms.” And over the years — as well as recently with his <a href="http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/howard/ellicott-city/ph-ho-lt-artist-residence-0809-story.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Merriweather District Artist-in-Residence work</a> — he has delighted and inspired people with his <a href="http://www.ericdyer.com" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">colorful multimedia zoetropes</a>.</span></p>

<p>“<span>I bring animation into the real world with my interactive sculptures. I’ve been collaging sequences of images and forms that are spun and come to animated life with the aid of a synchronized strobe light. I explore topics related to the history of the moving image, our relationship with technology, kinetics as a form of artistic expression, and the relevance of physical presence in an increasingly digital world.”</span></p>

In addition, I filled out United States Citizenship and Immigration Services(USCIS) immigration forms for clients, and wrote financial affidavits for fee waivers. My duties also included notifying clients via telephone or mailings about matters related to their applications and assisting the immigration team with tracking, filing, and mailing relevant documents, applications, and notices of action.</span><span><br><br></span></p><p><span><strong>Describe the process of obtaining your position. With their help, I was able to make my resume stronger, and improve my interviewing skills. </span></p><br><p><span><strong>What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization? </strong></span></p><p><span>I enjoyed working with refugees from all over the world, and helping them obtain immigration status here in the United States. Working in such a diverse environment has inspired me to help others in the future adjust to the American way of life. As the daughter of immigrants myself, I am thankful for the sacrifices my parents made when coming to the U.S.</span><span>Working at the IRC has emphasized the fact that America is a nation of immigrants, FOR immigrants, who continue to make positive contributions to our society.</span></p><br><p><span><strong>How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?</strong></span></p><p><span>Unfortunately, more and more immigrants are being denied entry to the United States nowadays. America has always been the land of opportunity, and I believe that everybody should get the chance to succeed in our country. The refugees and asylees that came to the office are from war-torn countries and are grateful for our service. Through this internship, I gained insight into the world of international development and humanitarian relief work. I hope to use this experience and my newfound knowledge to bring awareness to these issues individuals face everyday.</span></p><br><p><span><strong>What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience? </strong></span></p><p><span>Reach out, and do not be afraid to show your achievements to a potential internship/workplace. learning to work well with others is crucial. When you succeed as part
of a group, you become an empowered professional who can empathize,

    <div class="html-content"><div><span><a href="https://news.umbc.edu/pieoneer-awards-recognize-umbc-for-career-initiatives-supporting-international-students/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">August 14, 2018</a> by </span><span><span><a href="https://news.umbc.edu/author/csdd/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Catalina Sofia Dansberger Duque</a></span></span> <br></div><div><br></div><div><p><span>UMBC’s work to support international
students in their career development has earned the university a place
in the global spotlight. Professionals in International Education (PIE)
has selected UMBC as a finalist for a 2018 PIEoneer Award, with UMBC
being the only U.S. university honored in the Student Support category.
The selection recognizes UMBC’s work to cultivate a supportive community
for international students and to help them pursue careers that utilize
and value their unique language, academic, and professional skills.</span></p>
<p><span>PIE is specifically recognizing a series of programs designed by UMBC </span><a href="https://ies.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>International Education Services </span></a><span>(IES)
in collaboration with the UMBC Career Center. Responding to the needs
of international students and area employers, these initiatives help
international students be as competitive as possible in entering the
    workforce after graduation. </span></p>
    <p><span>“This recognition is incredibly
important for UMBC because it acknowledges on a global stage our
commitment to meeting the real and unique needs of our international
    students,” says </span><strong>Michelle Massey</strong><span>,
associate director, International Student and Scholar Services. “We
listen to our students, we develop solutions together as a community,
and we implement them to help these students have the best possible
experience at UMBC, and as alumni.”</span></p>
    <a href="https://news.umbc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/IES-Study-abroad-fair18-6894-1.jpg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><img src="https://news.umbc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/IES-Study-abroad-fair18-6894-1-1024x683.jpg" alt="" width="720" height="480" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></a>A sign reflecting UMBC’s participation in the national #YouAreWelcomeHere campaign.
    <p><span><br></span></p><p><span>These opportunities help
international students manage a range of challenges that they may
encounter on their path to career success in the United States through a
tiered process. International students learn about the Career Center’s
supportive resources in their earliest days on campus, during
orientation. As they progress in their degree programs, the Career
Center guides them through the process of identifying and exploring
specific career goals and skill sets that match their talents and
aspirations within the sphere of the U.S. job market, particularly
    through internship experiences. </span></p>
    <a href="https://news.umbc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/IES-International-Student-Orientation18-4493.jpg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><img src="https://news.umbc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/IES-International-Student-Orientation18-4493-1024x683.jpg" alt="" width="720" height="480" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></a>Spring 2018 UMBC International Student Orientation.
<p><br></p><p>IES and the Career Center co-organize an annual International Student
Career Conference focused on the unique needs of international students
in their job search process in the United States. Now in its fourth
year, the conference is an opportunity for students to network with
alumni, industry experts, and local employers, and get expert legal
    information from an immigration attorney.</p>
<p><span>IES has also partnered with the
Career Center and UMBC’s Mosaic Center to offer the workshop
“International Identities in the Workplace.” International students who
have already completed internships in the U.S. share their experiences
with others through the workshop. The event also explores the interview
process, business etiquette in American culture, and policy issues like
    protections against workplace discrimination.</span></p>
    <a href="https://news.umbc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Career_Fair_Fall14-0684.jpg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><img src="https://news.umbc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Career_Fair_Fall14-0684-1024x683.jpg" alt="" width="720" height="480" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></a>2018 UMBC Career Fair
<p><br></p><p>Networking opportunities, career fairs, internships, and conferences
help connect students directly with local start-ups and global companies
such as Google, McCormick &amp; Company, and Amazon. <span>“Obtaining internship and work experience is vital for student career success,” says </span><strong>Christine Routzahn</strong><span>,
director of the Career Center. “By working with partners such as IES,
we ensure our international students have access to these opportunities
and are prepared to advocate for themselves and thrive in the
    workplace.”</span></p>

<p><span><br></span></p><p><span>The impact of these programs has been
profound. After first connecting with the Career Center during
orientation, 93 percent of international students report that they
continue to access Career Center services during their time at UMBC.
Over one hundred international students attend the International Student
Career Conference each year. International graduate students
participating in these programs overwhelmingly report finding jobs that
align with their career goals. Employers participating in the summer
internship initiative report very strong interest in working further
with students, extending job offers to those who have already
participated or offering internships to future students.</span></p>
    <p><span>“The value of this campus-wide
partnership is immeasurable for international students working to
overcome significant obstacles to meet their goals in the U.S.,” shares
Massey. “I am so proud at how quick the UMBC community is to rise to the
occasion of learning about these challenges and supporting this group
of students to reach their potential together.”</span></p>
    <p>Maseey<span> will attend <a href="https://pieoneerawards.com/thepieoneerawards2018/en/page/2018-shortlist" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">The PIEoneer Awards</a> ceremony on behalf of UMBC </span><span><a href="https://ies.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">International Education Services</a>,</span><span> in London on September 7, 2018.</span></p>

<Title>UMBC&#8217;s Summer Undergraduate Research Fest 2018</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><span><a href="https://news.umbc.edu/umbcs-summer-undergraduate-research-fest-2018-spotlights-talents-of-emerging-scientists/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">August 14, 2018</a> by </span><span><span><a href="https://news.umbc.edu/author/sarahhansen/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Sarah Hansen</a></span></span> <br></div><div><br></div><div><p>UMBC’s University Center ballroom was standing-room only earlier this
week as visitors gathered to learn about new student research on topics
from HIV replication to enhancing art conservation through wireless
    temperature monitoring.</p>
<p>The Summer Undergraduate Research Fest (SURF) presenters were high
school students and undergraduates from UMBC and other colleges who
chose to spend their summers conducting research at UMBC. In all, 126
students participated in the event, which included two poster sessions
and an awards ceremony following the presentations. More than 30 faculty
members across five departments and two colleges at UMBC guided the
    students in their research.</p>
<p>“The experience helped us to think like scientists,” says <strong>Olufolake Majekodunmi </strong>’21, biological sciences and psychology. She and her research partner, <strong>Avantika Krishna</strong> ’21, biochemistry, conducted research for a<a href="https://news.umbc.edu/neurobiologist-weihong-lin-receives-nida-grant-to-investigate-the-safety-of-e-cigarette-flavorings/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> new project on e-cigarette flavorings</a> with neurobiologist <strong>Weihong Lin</strong>. As participants in the UMBC STEM <a href="https://news.umbc.edu/students-discover-and-name-new-viruses-in-unique-introduction-to-lab-research-at-umbc/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">BUILD Training Program</a>,
they have also received training in writing personal statements,
analyzing academic journal articles, constructing their résumés, and
    more.</p>
<p>“The internship prepared us for giving oral presentations and
applying to the workforce or grad school,” says Krishna. Both Krishna
and Majekodunmi plan to continue their work with Lin this fall.</p>
<p>For some students, the summer offered a chance to step outside their comfort zones. <strong>Sarah Carpe</strong> ‘20, environmental science, who transferred to UMBC from Baltimore City Community College, worked with biologist <strong>Steve Miller </strong>through
an NSF Research Experience and Mentoring (REM) award. Her project seeks
to enhance algal biofuels by manipulating algae genetics. This
stretched her beyond her typical focus areas, but she sees it as very
relevant to her passion for the environment because of its potential to
    help the planet, she says.</p>
<p><strong>Ewnet Sisay</strong> ‘20, mechanical engineering, studied zebrafish embryos with developmental biologist <strong>Rachel Brewster</strong>.
“I hope to go for a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering, so I wanted to try
biology before committing to a Ph.D,” Sisay says. The result? “I really
     love it.”</p>
<p>On the other hand, <strong>Rakan El-Mayta</strong> ‘18, chemical engineering and biological sciences, has been conducting research with biochemical engineer <strong>Erin Lavik </strong>for
two years. This summer, El-Mayta continued work on a project to
generate a 3D model of the human colon that will make testing new
therapies more efficient. The work has confirmed his enthusiasm for
engineering. “Everything is so applicable,” El-Mayta says, “and I get to
work with my hands and really think like an engineer.”</p>
<p>Sahle Gebremichael, a student at Baltimore City Community College,
spent time in Steve Miller’s lab this summer through the NSF REM
program. He intends to transfer to UMBC next year. “I think getting
research experience here will help me make the transition to UMBC,” he
    says.</p>
<p>In addition to sharing the benefits of their experiences, the student
also spoke to how research can sometimes be an emotional rollercoaster,
peppered with challenges and failures. But by working through those
issues, they came to see failures as growth opportunities, rather than
    setbacks.</p>
<p>“I’ve hit a couple roadblocks along the way,” says Carpe, “which has
helped me understand the project better because I have to really think
    to solve the problem.”</p>
<p>Brett Lucht, a student at Marist College and recipient of an NSF
Research Experience for Undergraduates award, also found a way to see
the positive in the challenges he faced while working with physical
chemist <strong>Lisa Kelly</strong>. “Failures are a part of research,” he says, “and we’ve learned from them, so they were good failures.”</p>
<p><strong>Bill LaCourse</strong>, dean of the College of Natural and
Mathematical Sciences, which organized the event, took a moment at the
research festival to tell the students that although they are still
early in their scientific careers, working to answer questions no one
has ever answered before is a noble and exciting challenge. He shared
his hope that their time as UMBC researchers “lights a flame of passion
that will drive you to greater undertakings…with joy and wonderment.”</p>
<p>“It has been our privilege to host you here at UMBC,” said LaCourse. “Your spirit is an inspiration to us all.”</p>
