<Title>Virtual parking permits now available</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span>Virtual parking permits are now available for all parking across campus.</span><br><br><span>All employees who purchased their permits through payroll deduction last year have been automatically migrated to the new system, so no further action is needed at this time. However, we ask that you still </span><a href="http://umbc.nupark.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">verify your vehicle information</a><span> on your account to ensure it is correct and the most up-to-date.</span><br><br><span>You can use the </span><a href="http://umbc.nupark.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC Parking Services Portal</a><span> to add vehicles to your account or purchase Daily Virtual Permits. </span><strong>New employees</strong><span> who wish to purchase parking permits through payroll deduction are required to </span><a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/rb4csb/nwtbnbb/zx636l" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">visit the Parking Services office</a><span> to complete a one-time payroll deduction form. </span><strong>Forms must be completed no later than <span><span>Tuesday, August 28</span></span></strong><span>.</span><br><br><span>The new permit system will go into effect at the start of the fall semester. <Title>Annica Wayman Appointed Associate Dean</Title>
<Tagline>Responsible for Shady Grove Affairs for CNMS</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><span>Dear Members of the UMBC Community,</span><br><br><span>I am delighted to announce the appointment of alumna Dr. Annica Wayman as Associate Dean for Shady Grove Affairs in CNMS, effective immediately.</span><br><br><span>As Associate Dean for Shady Grove Affairs, Dr. Wayman is responsible for administering and directing the undergraduate Translational Life Sciences Technology (TLST) program and Master of Professional Studies in Biotechnology at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG). She will oversee curricula and instruction; recruit and supervise qualified part-time faculty; collaborate with the Division of Professional Studies (UMBC-Shady Grove’s administrative division) on program marketing, student recruitment and retention activities; advise students; pursue business development opportunities with industry; manage UMBC's TLST/Biotechnology Advisory Board; and carry out the necessary administrative duties associated with academic program oversight. Dr. Wayman will also strengthen the relationships with our community college partners, while building UMBC’s presence and portfolio at USG.</span><br><br><span>Dr. Wayman brings to her new role extensive experience in leadership, administration, and education. For the past eight years, she worked at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), starting as an AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow in the Office of Science and Technology and becoming a Division Chief in the Global Development Lab. At USAID, she led her team in managing scientific research policies and programs for the agency and its more than 90 field offices worldwide while also strengthening partnerships with higher education institutions, federal science agencies, global development institutions, and across the industry. Prior to USAID, Annica worked at Becton, Dickinson &amp; Co. (BD) where she served in various R&amp;D engineering roles ranging from advanced technology development to new product development for the anesthesia platform. Dr. Wayman received her Ph.D. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Her thesis research focused on understanding the mechanokinetics of selectin-mediated adhesion of leukocytes on vascular surfaces. She received her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from UMBC.</span><br><br><span>UMBC is very fortunate to have someone of Dr. Annica Wayman’s impressive experience and talent to serve as Associate Dean for Shady Grove Affairs in CNMS. <Title>Voicemail Maintenance continuing Friday 8/17 starting at 8am</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>Today was marked both with failure and success as we made significant progress replacing the faulty, aging voicemail and call processing hardware. Despite our best efforts throughout the day we were only able to repair part of the system. Due to some additional equipment failures that occurred during the outage, we had to overnight more parts and expect to complete the maintenance during the day tomorrow (Friday 8/17).</span></p><br><p><span>Throughout this process we have been working closely with the vendor, taking every precaution to increase the likelihood of success. We are working hard to ensure we protect the existing data to the best of our ability. Once the additional hardware has been replaced and tested, we will synchronize the system and determine if there is any data loss.</span></p><br><p><span>We expect to complete the maintenance tomorrow afternoon and we will send a follow up email upon completion of the outage.</span></p><br><p><span>The campus community has been very patient and understanding during this process and we apologize for any inconvenience this extended outage has caused.     <div class="html-content"><div>The new Translational Life Science Technology program - offered exclusively at UMBC's Shady Grove campus - would like to announce an opportunity for UMBC Main Campus students to take the program's introductory course, Biotechnology Survey: Legal, Ethical, Regulatory &amp; Biosafety Issues (BTEC 300) in Fall 2018, <em><strong>without the need to commute to the Shady Grove campus!</strong></em></div><div><br></div><div><strong><u>About the course itself:</u></strong></div><div>BTEC 300 is designed to raise the student's awareness on a range of non-technical topics that frame the field of <a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/site/marketing/stm/definition.xhtml" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">translational medicine</a> and the biotechnology industry. Weekly meetings will cover topics ranging from legal decisions that affect what products can be patented by the biotechnology industry, to regulatory trends in the US and abroad, to the ethics of genomic mining and manipulation, and synthetic life. </div><div><br></div><div><strong><u>Course Pre-requisites:</u></strong> Grades of C or better in BIOL142, BIOL302, CHEM101, and PHYS111</div><div><br></div><div><strong><u>About the course offering:</u></strong></div><div>Section 02 of BTEC 300 will be offered as a streamed course on Main Campus in Fall 2018, meaning that Main Campus students will attend class at the same time as the Shady Grove campus students (who will enroll in section 01), participating via live-stream feed from the Shady Grove course's classroom to a classroom on Main Campus (location TBD, check the Schedule of Classes for updates).</div><div><br></div><div><strong><u>Life Sciences majors:</u></strong> Please be aware that <strong><em>BTEC 300 is NOT currently approved as an elective that will meet major requirements</em></strong> for any of the majors offered by the Biological Sciences Department or the Department of Chemistry &amp; Biochemistry.     <div class="html-content"><div>So, do you like jazz? There are currently seven jazz groups at UMBC: the Jazz Ensemble, four small groups, and the Jazz Guitar Ensemble. The audition is the same for all groups. Non-traditional instruments are welcome. Make music! Make friends! Receive course credit!</div><div><br></div><div>Also, we host our own jazz festival every spring. Recent guests include trumpeter Steven Bernstein, bassist Ben Allison, drummer John Hollenbeck, bassist Ben Street, pianist Larry Willis, tubist/saxophonist Howard Johnson, and saxophonist George Garzone. In addition to hosting our own festival, our students perform regularly off campus and at other area festivals.</div><div><br></div><div><div><a href="https://music.umbc.edu/ensembles/jazz-ensemble/auditions/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Auditions</a> will take place on Tuesday, August 28, 2017 from 12 noon to 5pm in PAHB 140.
