Have you tried SI PASS?

<Tagline>Weekly review sessions in BIOL, CHEM, ECON, MATH, PHYS</Tagline>

Tell us a little about yourself.

Hi, my name is Maria Packard and I am a senior Math major and Psychology minor. My career goal is to become a high school math teacher, so after I graduate I will stay at UMBC for another year to get my Master of Arts in Teaching. I love to play Ultimate Frisbee, run marathons, watch Game of Thrones, and hang out with friends.

Tell us about how you are involved on campus.

At UMBC I am involved with the Sherman Scholars, the Honors College, and the Ultimate Frisbee club teams. Sherman Scholars are all students who want to become teachers, specifically with a mission become culturally responsive educators. This year I have been helping out in a high school Algebra classroom twice a week, where I get to build relationships with students and assist in increasing their understanding of the material.

How and why did you get involved in being a tutor?

I have been tutoring since high school, so working in the Math and Science Tutoring Center is a good next step towards working in a classroom. Since I want to be a math teacher, I thought that being a tutor would help me to gain experience in helping students to learn and practice my teaching skills.

What is your favorite thing about being a tutor?

My favorite thing about being a tutor is seeing students be successful. It is always a great feeling when students are able to work through a problem and get the correct answer on their own, or when we all work together on a difficult problem and we finally get it right.

Why should students utilize the tutoring?

Tutoring is great! I didn’t know anything about the LRC before I became a tutor, but I wish I did when I was taking my Calculus and Computer Science classes. Here in the Math and Science Tutoring Center, we are open for most of the day and students can come whenever they want. Additionally, we have a lot of tutors who cover a variety of classes. This space can also help students to meet other people in their classes and form study groups.

What advice would you give students about how to prepare for a tutoring session?

I think that students have a better experience if they come with a plan of what they want to do. It is beneficial for students to come prepared with questions, or with an idea of what they want to work on. Students should try to review material ahead of time, or attempt homework questions before asking for help. Also, students can use the LRC website to see at what times tutors for their class will be available.

When and where can someone work with you through the Learning Resources Center?

If you want to come to me for help in your math classes, I work Tuesdays, Wednesday, and Thursdays from 12 to 2 in the afternoon! I work in the Math and Science Tutoring Center, which is located on the first floor of the library on the right near the printing stations.

Workshop on Graduate School Application and Procedures

ME S-STEM Scholarship Program hosted a workshop on graduate school application. Dr. Chuck Eggleton gave a presentation and led the discussion. This workshop aims at ME undergraduate students in their early stages at UMBC to consider graduate school in their career. Dr. Eggleton assure students that most of the graduate school expenses are covered by the employer, lab researcher grants, department teaching assistant opportunity, or graduate student fellowship from federal government. Dr. Eggleton and Dr. Topoleski answered many questions students asked. One of the UMBC alumni, Mr. Yared Amanuel, shared his experience of working at Naval Sea Systems Command -- Carderock Division, while pursuing his PhD at umbc. We thank Ms. Diane Ghorayeb, for coordinating the event and the ME department for providing the lunch. Although the event ended before 1 pm, several scholars and ME faculty stayed to continue to discuss topics related to their academic experience and career in the future.

UMBC Retriever Essentials CCMA AmeriCorps Position OPEN!!!!!

<Tagline>Deadline Extended to 4/26!!! Email us today!</Tagline>

UMBC Retriever Essentials Team is looking for a new CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA for 2019-2020!

Retriever Essentials is a faculty, staff, and student partnership
tackling food insecurity in the UMBC community. The program offers three
ways for students to receive access to healthy foods and other
essential supplies, free of charge: Food Zones, Save a Swipe, and
Community Partnerships. Food Zones are six designated locations on
campus where students can anonymously pick up a pre-packed bag of
non-perishable groceries and toiletries. The intake process is
anonymous, but a short demographic based intake survey is required--no
financial evidence of need is required. Additionally, there are 3
locations on campus with donation bins--Retriever Essentials is a fully
donation-supported food pantry-- where the campus community routinely
provides non-perishable groceries for programming. The Save a Swipe
program provides free meals to the campus dining hall. Students with
meal plans can sign up to donate either 5 or 10 meals to the Save a
Swipe “pool.” These meals then become available for use by students who
are identified as food insecure by trained Retriever Essentials team
members and campus staff, so they can eat on campus for free. Community
partnerships act as the final pillar to Retriever Essentials. Retriever
Essentials is aware that food insecurity is often the tip of the iceberg
in a student’s financial struggle and can be the first of many barriers
to academic success. To provide support for “higher needs services,”
the UMBC Clinical Social Worker will refer students who are utilizing
Retriever Essentials to other campus and/or community resources. All
three aspects of Retriever Essentials programming provide a pathway to
academic success for the most at-risk UMBC students.
Member Duties :
The second year CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA will implement the current
working operation manual to continue streamlining all Retriever
Essentials programming, while updating it to ensure needs are met in the
most efficient way possible. They will oversee volunteer recruitment
and coordination for daily operations of the food pantry, which include:
donation collection, inventory, bag packing, and bag delivery. The CCMA
AmeriCorps VISTA will also be tasked with developing a fundraising plan
in order to raise money to support Retriever Essentials’ proposal for a
permanent pantry space on campus. They will also work to develop
collaborative partnerships with departments and student groups, as well
as the Retrievers Action Committee, on and off campus to provide
programming and events around food justice, healthy eating on a budget,
and much more. Additionally, the CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA will create and
implement a student-board to help institutionalize Retriever Essentials.
