Dr. Jinglai Shen receives a new NSF grant
Project Title: Smart Vehicle Platooning Built upon Real-Time Learning and Distributed Optimization
Dr. Jinglai Shen has been awarded a NSF grant (CMMI 1902006) in the amount of $130,000 for the period 2019–2022 from the Civil Infrastructure Systems Program in the Division of Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation. The award includes support for a graduate research assistant.
Abstract:
Emerging connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) technologies offer great potentials to reduce traffic congestion and improve traffic efficiency. However, much of the CAV related work focuses on individual vehicles' safety, which compromises traffic efficiency when mixed traffic (CAVs and human-driven vehicles) are on the road interacting with each other. This project aims to study how a group of CAVs can respond to exogenous disturbances resulting from human-driven vehicles, lane change requests and abnormal traffic and cyber conditions through cooperative speed or acceleration control. The research will improve road safety and traffic efficiency of future transportation systems involving CAVs. This project will disseminate research and education outcomes to broader audiences, including under-represented college and K-12 students with a particular focus on minority students.
The specific research objectives of this project are to develop vehicle platoon centered optimal, adaptive, and resilient vehicle platooning control under various normal or abnormal traffic and/or cyber conditions. The project will develop (a) advanced model predictive control integrating distributed optimization for optimal vehicle platooning control under normal traffic/cyber conditions; (b) mixed integer programming based model predictive control for optimal vehicle platooning control adaptive to lane change requests; (c) resilient vehicle platooning control integrating real-time learning and distributed optimization under abnormal traffic and/or cyber conditions. The project will integrate the state of the art from multiple fields including traffic flows, control, optimization, learning, and distributed computation and will establish an interdisciplinary foundation for coordinated and automated vehicle platoon centered traffic control under complex real-world traffic conditions.
This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.

We have a few important announcements for Fall '19 Graduate Assistants.
Tuition Remission Update
If you will be a Graduate Assistant in the Fall '19 semester and are expecting tuition remission please note that the Graduate School is currently working diligently to post your tuition remission by the bill date of 8/20.
However, if you check your account on 8/20 and you do not see tuition remission posted, know that it is due to the high volume of transactions that we are processing. We will ensure that all tuition remission is posted to student accounts no later than 8/24. Note that although your bill due date is 8/20, late fees will not be assessed until 8/25. If you registered for classes in August, your bill due date is 9/20.
Graduate Assistant (Mandatory) Orientation on 8/23 - Please sign-up!
New Fall '19 Graduate Assistants are required to attend the Graduate Assistant Orientation on 8/23 which includes Title IX training.
Please go to the link below to review the agenda and to sig-up for the session:
If, due to extenuating circumstances, you cannot attend the Graduate Assistant Orientation on 8/23, please plan to attend one of the sessions of Title IX training offered on 8/20. If you attend training on 8/20, you will be excused from attending on 8/23.

Dawn Shafer Successfully Presents
her Dissertation Proposal
The Language, Literacy & Culture Program is pleased to announce that Dawn Shafer, of LLC Cohort 19, successfully and skillfully presented her dissertation research proposal to her full committee on August 14, 2019. Her topic is titled, "Why Strengths Matter: An Exploration of Community Cultural Wealth among Masters-level First Generation Students."
After Dawn's presentation, she and her committee had a substantive discussion surrounding her topic and methodological approach. They determined that her project was worthy of doctoral study and provided useful advice on how to move forward with her research.
