The Retriever Essentials team is proud to announce that we will be forming a Student Leadership Board for the 2019-2020 school year! Our goal is to engage passionate student leaders in a sustainable and impactful way. 


The main role of the Student Ambassador position is to create and sustain connections between Retriever Essentials and the broader student body and campus community. The Retriever Essentials Student Leadership Board contributes to the vision of Retriever Essentials by promoting Retriever Essentials events, engaging the UMBC community, and fulfilling essential pantry-operation tasks including collecting and inventorying donations, and packing and delivering food bags. Ambassadors may also assist with the design and facilitation of workshops addressing the stigma of food insecurity, community dinners, food drives, and other engaging outreach events. This means that it is essential for all Ambassadors to demonstrate strong leadership skills, to be team-oriented, and have willingness to contribute to the vision of the Retriever Essentials Advisory Board.

Thank you to all the UMBC students, faculty, and staff who have endured the noise and dust this summer as we made these changes. Here is what’s coming:

International Station @ The Commons: This station replaces Au Bon Pain and adds in the new Halal Shack and a new Student Choice station, while keeping Masala. In response to student feedback, both Masala and Halal Shack will offer only Halal-certified foods in a great new open environment.  

Dunkin’ Donuts @ The Commons: This new full service venue is located on the ground level, where you will find a variety of coffee beverages, breakfast and bakery sandwiches, bagels and, of course, donuts.

Chick-fil-A: This location has undergone extensive renovation in order to transition to a full-service venue with an expanded menu – most notably by adding milkshakes! The projected opening is mid-October. Until then, expanded hours will be available at the Administration Coffee Shop (open until 4 p.m.) and Pollo (open earlier at 10 a.m.), with pop-up stations added around campus along with periodic food trucks. Patrons are encouraged to also visit the new Dunkin' Donuts and Halal Shack venues.

Teaching Kitchen @ True Grit’s: This new venue will serve meals during breakfast, lunch, and dinner similar to the former My Pantry. In between meal periods and in the evenings, this station will be a teaching space for activities such as student recipe competitions, cooking classes, dining etiquette, and the like. Special events for seb, SGA, cultural groups, faculty and staff, athletics, and other groups on campus may also be held here. And don’t worry… Corey will still be there in the mornings to greet the early risers!

The Adjunct Edge: Teaching, Technology and Advocacy is the first Annual Adjunct Conference at UMBC, organized by AFAC and sponsored by the Office of the Provost.

The conference will take place on Saturday 26 October 2019, from 8.30-3.30pm. A complimentary continental breakfast and luncheon will be served in the Skylight room.

The program for this one day conference includes presentations by UMBC's adjunct faculty who have received the AFAC Research awards over the past few years as well as musical performances by UMBC's music department adjuncts. The conference will also feature a keynote talk by Maria Maisto, one of the founders of The New Faculty Majority, a non-profit adjunct advocacy group.The afternoon session will focus on new pedagogy techniques, integrating technology in the classroom and adjunct advocacy.

We encourage all UMBC Adjuncts to come to to this creative and informative conference.

My name is Ryan Wilkens and I am the new Political Science Advising Coordinator. I just wanted to let you all know that I am here to help if you have any questions regarding how to go about getting clearance to register for courses, getting in touch with a faculty adviser, or getting assigned a faculty adviser if you do not already have one. Starting August 26th, I will also have consistent office hours in the Public Policy Building in office 357. My office hours will be:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday- 10 a.m- 1 p.m. & 2 p.m.- 4 p.m.
