Graphic Artist Gareth Hinds: Library & Gallery Speaker Event
Book talk and signing by comic creator and Maryland author
The Albin O. Kuhn Library and Gallery will host a talk and signing by comic creator and local Maryland artist Gareth Hinds, whose graphic novels based on literary classics have captivated readers and critics. Mr. Hinds, whose latest work is a graphic novel adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, The Iliad, will discuss his work on Wednesday, October 9, 2019, at 4:30pm in the Library Gallery. A question and answer period and book signing will follow at 5:30pm.
The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and Gallery, in partnership with the UMBC Honors College, College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, Interdisciplinary Studies Living-Learning Community, and the departments of Ancient Studies, English, History, and Visual Arts. It is being presented in conjunction with Ancient Studies Week, an annual celebration by the Department of Ancient Studies, scheduled for the second week of October.
Gareth Hinds is the creator of critically-acclaimed graphic novels, including adaptations of Beowulf (which Publisher’s Weekly called a “mixed-media gem”), King Lear (which Booklist named one of the top 10 graphic novels for teens), The Merchant of Venice (which Kirkus called “the standard that all others will strive to meet” for Shakespeare adaptation), The Odyssey (which garnered four starred reviews and a spot on ten “best of 2010” lists), and is a recipient of the Boston Public Library’s “Literary Lights for Children” award. Internship at Raytheon -- ME S-STEM Scholar Allison Dietz
This past summer, ME S-STEM scholar Ms. Allison Deitz had the amazing opportunity to intern at an international aerospace and defense company Raytheon. Her main responsibility was to alter and update engineering drawings and create the required documentation for those changes. This required her to learn a 3D modeling program called Creo from the ground up. One of her favorite assignments was creating a drawing from scratch and releasing it into our product data management system to be used for an entirely new program. Over the course of this internship, she learned a multitude of things. She was able to be apart of a corporate workplace where she used her communication and interpersonal skills every time she interacted with her coworkers. She will continue to intern at Raytheon over the school year in a part-time capacity so that she can assist the mechanical engineers and learn more about the industry and engineering as a whole.

Coming On Home!
It's about time!!
Hi everyone and welcome back!! We're excited to kick this year off with our first HvZ game tonight in Fine Arts 306 at 7 PM. We'll be playing "Coming On Home"! We also have a mission coming up on Thursday, 9/12, in Meyer 030 at 7 PM. Please avoid use of any hard-hitting blasters this week, as we want to be mindful of new players!!
Speaking of whomst, I-Fest will be held in the RAC today from 12-2 PM. We love all of our returning players, but please avoid crowding the HvZ table so that other students can get info and get on the mailing list. You'll have a chance to welcome them in tonight!

Welcome back to another wonderful semester! Entrepreneurs at UMBC has some exciting activities planned this semester to help students around campus meet and network with other entrepreneurs, create their own startups, or join existing ones. There will be plenty of resources provided for interested students to join and help create an innovative ecosystem of collaboration and hustle around campus. Please note that the first General Body Meeting of Fall 2019 for Monday, September 9th has been canceled due to Involvement Fest. The official interest meeting has been pushed to the following Monday, September 16th from 12:00 – 1:00pm at Fireside Lounge in Commons.

Interest Meeting!
RESCHEDULED -- SEPT 16TH -- 12 - 1PM -- FIRESIDE LOUNGE
Welcome back to another wonderful semester! Entrepreneurs at UMBC has some exciting activities planned this semester to help students around campus meet and network with other entrepreneurs, create their own startups, or join existing ones. There will be plenty of resources provided for interested students to join and help create an innovative ecosystem of collaboration and hustle around campus. Please note that the first General Body Meeting of Fall 2019 for Monday, September 9th has been canceled due to Involvement Fest. The official interest meeting has been pushed to the following Monday, September 16th from 12:00 – 1:00pm at Fireside Lounge in Commons.
Please make sure you are following our myUMBC page for any and all updates! We will be announcing our official schedule for the upcoming semester shortly, so stay tuned! For any other questions, please email us at
