The deadline to claim your tickets for the spring commencement ceremonies is today, May 5. If you have not yet claimed your tickets and are planning to participate in the graduation ceremonies, claim your tickets today on the ticket website. At 11:59 pm the ticket website will close and any unclaimed tickets will be distributed to those graduates that are on the wait list for extra tickets. We will email everyone that is on the wait list on Friday, May 10 to let you know if you can claim extra tickets. If you are granted extra tickets you will have 48 hours to claim them.

Fermi Paradox and Drake Equation Open House Summary
Tonight we discussed Fermi's Paradox, the question asked by Enrico Fermi of why, if there is life out there and it is easy to make, have we not yet learned of this life or have interacted with it? We also learned about Frank Drake's equation, the equation of the number of civilizations with which we can communicate per year. We talked about the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) and the history of the program, which listens for messages from space as well as sends them out. Then we talked about methods of detecting planets and the Kepler Space Telescope, which has found 3200 planets since 2009. We also talked about stellar formation in terms of planets and life. We discussed the Kardashev scale, which has different levels of civilization distinguished by how many resources a civilization has harnessed (the highest level being a type III, which has harnessed all of the resources of a galaxy). The last part of the talk was about the possible reasons we have not discovered life outside of our planet. Lastly, we went upstairs to tour the observatory. Commons Sports Zone, UMBC
The Digital Entertainment Conference (DEC) is an annual student-organized event that brings professional game developers from the area to UMBC to talk about their experience in the game industry. DEC’19 will be held 11-5 on Saturday, May 11 in the Sports Zone of the UMBC Commons building. Attend to meet professions from the local game industry, see games made by UMBC students, and network with game developers.
DEC’19 is free to attend and open to UMBC students, high school students, UMBC alumni and anyone interested in game development. A free catered lunch is provided and parking on campus is free on weekends on any lot marked A, B, or C.
This year’s speakers include: Greg Lane, Community Manager at Big Huge Games; Dorian Newcomb, Co-founder and Art Director at Mohawk Games; Andrei Shulgach, Composer for games and short films and UI Implementer at UX is Fine; Rebecca Bushko: Software Engineer at Big Huge Games; Eric Jordan, Senior Software Engineer at Firaxis Games and the first president of the UMBC Game Developers Club.
The DEC’19 is co-sponsored by the UMBC Game Developers club and Computer Science Education Club and funded by the COEIT Dean’s Office’s Collaborative Student Funding Program.
