Honoring Alice Wong (1974-2025)

<Tagline>A Fierce Light in Disability Justice.</Tagline>

Repost from the Office of Accessibility & Disability Services

This tribute is based entirely on reporting from Disability Scoop.

Alice Wong, the groundbreaking disability rights activist known for her wit, creativity, and willingness to shock systems into accountability, has died at the age of 51. Disability Scoop reports that she passed away following an infection at UCSF Hospital.

Wong was widely recognized for her radical imagination and her fearless approach to justice. She called herself a "cyborg oracle" and used technology, storytelling, and political strategy to confront ableism. Her national profile rose in 2013 when President Obama appointed her to the National Council on Disability. She later attended a White House reception through a telepresence robot, a moment that symbolized both her ingenuity and her insistence on access.

Disability Scoop highlights her influence as an author, podcaster, editor, and founder of the Disability Visibility Project. Her #CripTheVote initiative shifted political conversations, and her advocacy helped thousands of high risk Californians gain earlier vaccine access during the COVID pandemic. She also challenged policies like plastic straw bans that ignored disabled people's needs.

Wong received a MacArthur Foundation genius grant in 2024 for exposing systemic prejudice and expanding public understanding of disabled lives.

After her passing, a prewritten message was released. In it she wrote: "Hi everyone, it looks like I ran out of time. I have so many dreams that I wanted to fulfill and plans to create new stories for you." She reflected on her childhood, internalized ableism, and the power of storytelling. She urged the world to create more space for disabled culture, saying "You all, we all, deserve the everything and more in such a hostile, ableist environment."

Friends, leaders, and organizations described Wong as a visionary. Sandy Ho called her a "disabled oracle" who could see the future. San Francisco's mayor praised her courage. The American Association of People with Disabilities wrote that she made the "complexity of disabled experiences visible to the world."

Born in 1974 to immigrants from Hong Kong, Wong grew up in Indianapolis. She lived with a rare form of muscular atrophy, used a wheelchair from grade school, and relied on a BiPap ventilator. She wrote powerfully about her relationship to technology, calling her devices "bits of hardware" that grounded and liberated her.

Her writing explored how painful labels like "defect" and "abnormal" became sources of power and resistance through creativity. Her memoir, Year of the Tiger, blended vulnerability with cultural critique, imagination, and her belief in collective liberation through art and storytelling.

Disability Scoop notes that Wong was known for her red lipstick, black power chair, and gray ventilator. She wrote for Teen Vogue, The New York Times, and many other outlets. She addressed issues ranging from medical crowdfunding to national health policy. She spoke about the danger that political shifts posed for disabled people and insisted on a world where disabled joy and survival are prioritized.

Her final message, released by her family and shared by Disability Scoop, ended with words from Year of the Tiger: "The real gift any person can give is a web of connective tissue. If we love fiercely, our ancestors live among and speak to us through these incandescent filaments glowing from the warmth of memories."

Rest in power, Alice Wong. You changed the world and expanded what is possible.

Retrievers giving back: How we’re supporting one another in the season of gratitude

We are nearing the end of the semester, and closing out the fall means celebrating with the season of giving and gratitude. UMBC feels the love of its community all year round, and that support is what inspires our Retrievers to give back.

UMBC Retrievers are acting on their gratitude for community members in various ways. ‘Tis the season, so let’s take a look at how our Retrievers are giving back.

Save-a-Swipe Program

Thanks to generous UMBC community donations, the Save-a-Swipe program reached a record 1,050 meal swipes this fall. This partnership between Retriever Essentials, Retriever Card Center, and Dining Services enables members to donate meal swipes to students facing food insecurity.

Assistant director of Retriever Essentials, Michael Berardi ’19, media and communication studies, shares insight on just how important the donations received are and what it means to the community, saying, “Donations are what help nourish our community. Now more than ever, Retriever Essentials is a critical resource for thousands of Retrievers facing food insecurity. Nearly everything we distribute is either directly donated or purchased with donated funds and grants. We’ve seen incredible generosity from folks all around campus, and are so grateful for the consistent support for our students, staff, and faculty in need.”

Food for Fines

Food for Fines is a clever way to turn parking citation fines into charity donations to those in need. Partnering with Retriever Essentials, UMBC Parking Services reduces one citation to a warning in return for five toiletry or non-perishable food items. Food for Fines previously collected 388 pounds of donations, and they set a goal for 500 pounds this semester to help those in need. Thanks to the outpouring of generosity from UMBC students, they collected 879 pounds of food, making this likely the single largest physical donation in program history.

Athletics fundraiser

The highly anticipated women’s basketball beltway battle is not only an exciting game between UMBC and Towson, but it also served up a canned food drive! For every can donated, each person received $1 off concessions for the game.

10 for 10

For the past 10 years, Retriever Essentials has been dedicated to nourishing our ever-growing UMBC community by fighting food insecurity and providing essential resources to students, staff, and faculty. To celebrate a decade of service, Retriever Essentials is holding a 10 for 10 campaign, which encourages individuals to donate a recurring $10 per month (or as much as you are able) in honor of 10 years.

"Nothing About Us Without Us": this slogan epitomizes the disability rights movement's demand for disabled people to control social representations of their lives and bodies. In this course, we will connect Writing Studies and Disability Studies to explore the efforts of disabled activists to gain inclusion and challenge harmful stereotypes about disability and neurodiversity. Topics and communities we will study include: physical disabilities and mobility; d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing; blindness/visual disabilities; mental disability and neurodiversity; chronic illness and chronic pain; invisible disabilities; and others. Our primary readings will span many genres, from essays and memoir to documentary film, podcasts, and social media activism. (Combined with ENGL 671)
