January is Stalking Awareness Month

<Tagline>A Proclamation by President Obama.... Read on for details!</Tagline>

Every January, we as a community acknowledge the need for awareness and education related to stalking. While we often joke about "facebook stalking," the fact is that stalking isn't a joke and can be a very scary experience for victims and their families. Please read the proclamation below for more information.
Additionally, be sure to check out UMBC's Relationship Violence Awareness and Prevention website for more information on stalking and other forms of interpersonal violence.

If you need support from campus members related to a stalking incident, please contact a member from the SARVRT team. For more information from the Stalking Resource Center: http://www.victimsofcrime.org/

Presidential Proclamation -- National Stalking Awareness Month, 2013
NATIONAL STALKING AWARENESS MONTH, 2013
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Each year, millions of Americans face the fear, isolation, and danger of being victims of stalking. At some point in their lives, 1 in 6 women and 1 in 19 men will be stalked, and many of these crimes will go unreported and unprosecuted. During National Stalking Awareness Month, we rededicate ourselves to supporting victims of stalking and sharpen our resolve to bring perpetrators to justice.

Stalking is a pattern of unwanted contact that causes victims to fear for their safety or the safety of family members. It can include implied or explicit threats; harassment; or nonconsensual communication through phone calls, text messages, or emails. The perpetrator is usually someone the victim knows. Stalking behaviors may appear innocuous to outside observers, but victims often endure intense physical and emotional distress that affects every aspect of their lives. Many feel forced to move, or change jobs. Tragically, stalking tends to escalate over time, and it is sometimes followed by sexual assault or homicide.

My Administration remains committed to building a robust criminal justice response to stalking -- one that holds offenders accountable, offers protection and support to all victims of violence, and empowers them to break the cycle of abuse. In January 2012, we held the first-ever White House stalking roundtable with survivors, law enforcement officers, victim advocates, and researchers. We have built partnerships with communities across the Nation to implement anti-stalking efforts. And we continue to support nonprofit organizations and local, State, and tribal governments as they develop more effective responses to violence against women -- including direct services, crisis intervention, transitional housing, legal assistance to victims, court improvement, and training for law enforcement and courts.

We are also working to address the threat of cyberstalking. While advances in technology are making this crime more prevalent, they can also pose unique opportunities to address it. Communities are developing new tools that help connect victims to local services, and State governments are updating statutes to further protect people from cyberstalking. Through our Apps Against Abuse challenge, my Administration recognized mobile applications that are empowering people to defend themselves against dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

Thanks to the dedicated work of law enforcement officials, community leaders, advocates, organizations, and survivors, our country has made great strides in combating stalking. During National Stalking Awareness Month, we resolve to keep building on this momentum until no American lives in fear of this crime.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim January 2013 as National Stalking Awareness Month. I call upon all Americans to recognize the signs of stalking, acknowledge stalking as a serious crime, and urge those impacted not to be afraid to speak out or ask for help. Let us also resolve to support victims and survivors, and to create communities that are secure and supportive for all Americans.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirty-first day of December, in the year of our Lord two thousand twelve, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-seventh.

BARACK OBAMA

Guest speaker discusses importance of understanding religion

<Tagline>By: Ashley Edokpayi (TRW Staff)</Tagline>

UMBC hosted the guest speaker Stephen Prothero, acclaimed expert and
author on religion, offered members of the UMBC community religious and
spiritual insight during the discussion "God is Not One: The Eight
Religions That Run the World and Why Their Differences Matter."
Prothero
has authored numerous books on religion including God is not One: The
Eight Rival Religions that Run the World and Religious Literacy. He is
also a professor in the Department of Religion at Boston University and
has appeared on mainstream news networks like CNN, MSNBC and FOX.

The discussion was held on Thursday, November 29 in the Skylight
Lounge. About 50 students, faculty and visitors attended to hear
Prothero's lecture, in which he emphasized the importance of educational
     literacy in religion in America.

"You can't make sense of the world without making sense of religion,"
said Prothero. He pointed out how religion affects major societal
matters such as politics, military forces and government systems. "I
believe humans are motivated by passions that cannot be seen."

Catholicism, Islam, Buddhism and Christianity were some of the
religions Prothero compared and contrasted. He also described how
although the U.S. is the most religious country in the world,
individuals have very little knowledge about religion itself.

"Religion has public power," he said, explaining that the media has
displayed how religion affects human rights like abortion and marriage
equality during the last decade. Individual morals and values differ
across religions, which often ignites controversy regarding the
    legislation of these human rights.

One of Prothero's main goals is to encourage both teachers and
professors to incorporate religious topics in their curriculum. "I think
it would be good to teach world religions and Christianity in a general
sense," said senior public health major Alexandra Mills. "It's
important to discuss and have a basic understanding of different
    religions."

The discussion was sponsored by The Office of Student Life's Mosaic
Center along with the Office of Undergraduate Education and several
other co-sponsors. The Mosaic Center staff dedicates their time to
creating and fostering cross-cultural collaboration and diversity on the
UMBC campus through events such as Prothero's discussion.

"We like to find ways to be a more unified community at UMBC," said
Assistant Director of Student Life for Cultural and Spiritual Diversity
    Lisa Gray.

"I agree that we should focus and celebrate our differences," said
senior Asian studies major Yasmin Radbod. "We shouldn't assume that we
    are all the same."

Though the east coast of the U.S. has some of the largest South Asian populations in the country today, these early settlers shed light on the development of South Asian communities across the U.S. and are an important location in understanding contemporary immigration patterns. Roots and Reflections highlights the gender, race, and class aspects of this immigration and settlement.

For an overview of the book, see the book trailer below.

Originally posted here: https://umbcinsights.wordpress.com/2012/12/07/amy-bhatt-gender-and-womens-studies-publishes-new-book/

GWST Dr Kate presented at NWSA Feminism Unbound conference

<Tagline>Feminist blogger Tracy L Hawkins shouts out</Tagline>

I went to the conference with a sense of dread (as is common for young professors going to their professional conferences) but it turned out to be a fantastic, if very challenging, experience.

I’m sure that you don’t want a play-by-play of my experiences (I took 4500 words worth of notes!), but I do want to give you the highlights to show you some of the things that some awesome people are thinking about. So, here are some of the really interesting panels and papers that I got to hear:

•A super helpful panel on strategies of publishing in academic journals. This is an essential skill for the young academic, so it was really good to hear from the editors of specific publications about what they look for and how they do peer reviews. Now I just need to submit some articles!

•An engaging panel on different approaches to teaching Intro to Women’s Studies (West Virginia University). This panel was based around using props, so we heard about teaching with cells (from a medical perspective), condoms (from a public health perspective), corsets (from a historical perspective), and blow up dolls (from an activist perspective).

•A paper by Danielle Henderson (University of Wisconsin-Madison) on her Feminist Ryan Gosling tumblr. You guys, she is awesome, and you really need to see her memes. Such an interesting critique/use of feminist theory!

•Two really useful papers by Jenn Brandt (High Point University) and Kate Drabinski (University of Maryland, Baltimore County) on using Twitter and Blogs in the feminist classroom. I am definitely going to try to incorporate these approaches in my spring courses. There are challenges to using those technologies, but I think that teaching students to write publicly and to engage in public debates is so important. ..."

Read the rest of the blog post at:
http://tracylhawkins.wordpress.com/2012/11/17/nwsa-annual-conference-fascinating-topics-and-challenging-interactions/
