<Title>Transgender Day of Remembrance</Title>
<Tagline>To memorialize those killed due to anti-transgender hatred.</Tagline>
<Body>

    <div class="html-content"><div><h5><strong><span>Join the Women’s Center at UMBC and Student Life’s Mosaic Center in memorializing transgender people who have lost their lives due to hatred. </span><span>We observe this day with a slide show sharing the pictures and names of those who have been lost. </span></strong><strong><br></strong></h5></div><div><strong><br></strong></div><h5><strong>You are also invited to visit the Women’s Center on Wednesday, November 20th to view the slideshow and reflect on these lives.</strong></h5><div><strong><br></strong></div><h5><strong>For more information, there will be a table at the Korenman Lecture.</strong></h5><h5><strong><br></strong>Visit transgenderdor(dot)org to learn more.</h5><div><br><div>The Transgender Day of Remembrance was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder on November 28th, 1998 kicked off the “Remembering Our Dead” web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Rita Hester’s murder — like most anti-transgender murder cases — has yet to be solved.</div><div><br></div><div>Although not every person represented during the Day of Remembrance self-identified as transgender — that is, as a transsexual, crossdresser, or otherwise gender-variant — each was a victim of violence based on bias against transgender people.</div><div><br></div><div>We live in times more sensitive than ever to hatred based violence, especially since the events of September 11th. Yet even now, the deaths of those based on anti-transgender hatred or prejudice are largely ignored. Over the last decade, more than one person per month has died due to transgender-based hate or prejudice, regardless of any other factors in their lives. This trend shows no sign of abating.</div><div><br></div><div>The Transgender Day of Remembrance serves several purposes. It raises public awareness of hate crimes against transgender people, an action that current media doesn’t perform. Day of Remembrance publicly mourns and honors the lives of our brothers and sisters who might otherwise be forgotten. Through the vigil, we express love and respect for our people in the face of national indifference and hatred. Day of Remembrance reminds non-transgender people that we are their sons, daughters, parents, friends and lovers. Day of Remembrance gives our allies a chance to step forward with us and stand in vigil, memorializing those of us who’ve died by anti-transgender violence.</div></div><div><br></div></div>

When does the video documentation of an event shift from witness to evidence? If a performance is designed for the camera is the urgency, the live-ness, of the performance obliterated?  When the video maker’s intent is to re-present a specific historic period, action, or happening, can reenactments be considered documentation? Selected works as well as visiting artists and archivists will speak to the many ways archives—brimming with mediated experiences—are critical to cultural determination, memory, and practice.</p><p> </p><p>Joanna Raczynska is the Assistant Head of Film Programs in the Department of Film Programs at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. She earned her master’s degree in documentary by practice from Royal Holloway College, University of London in 2001. She first started making non-fiction films ands videos in 1996, while a student at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Her works have screened internationally and across the United States, most recently at ZKM in Karlsruhe, Germany. She has previously worked for a variety of non-profit organizations including Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center in Buffalo, NY (where she served as Media Arts Director from 2002 – 2006), the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation and the Baltimore Museum of Art.</p><div><p>Admission to the exhibition is free. The Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and is located in the Fine Arts Building, room 105.</p></div><div>For directions and additional information, please refer to UMBC's <a href="http://artscalendar.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Arts and Culture Calendar</a>.</div><div><br></div></div>

<Title>Morgan State fraternity rejects student for being gay?</Title>
<Tagline>Student says frat rejected him because of sexual orientation</Tagline>

"It's something that the university takes very very seriously."</p><p>Carter said that discrimination — in Greek life or elsewhere — is against university policy and that those found in violation can face disciplinary action after a review by a panel of students, faculty and staff.</p><p>Stewart, a 20-year-old senior business major, said he wanted to join Kappa Alpha Psi — Morgan's chapter is called Alpha Iota — because his pastor and mentor from his youth was a member. He said he grew up poor in Annapolis and that his mentor had a major influence on his life.</p><p>"What he offered to me, I wanted the ability to offer that to someone else," Stewart said.</p><p>Stewart said he is no longer interested in pledging the fraternity but that he filed a complaint because he wanted to raise awareness.</p><p>"I didn't know I was going to have no control — that my interview meant nothing, my achievements meant nothing, because they had already made up their minds," Stewart said.</p><p><br></p><p><em><a href="mailto:cwells@baltsun.com" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">cwells@baltsun.com</a></em></p><p><em>twitter.com/cwellssun</em></p><span><br>Read more by clicking "Visit Website" below.</span></div>
