Beyond the Checkpoint
Rebecca Adelman, assistant professor in the Department of Media and Communication Studies and affiliate assistant professor in the Department of Gender + Women's Studies, has published a new book, “Beyond the Checkpoint: Visual Practices in America’s Global War on Terror” (The University of Massachusetts Press, 2014).
Since the 9/11 attacks on U.S. soil, American citizenship has been redefined by the visual images associated with the Global War on Terror (GWOT). Rebecca A. Adelman contends that, in viewing images such as security footage of the 9/11 hijackers, film portrayals of the attacks and subsequent wars, memorials commemorating the attacks, and even graphics associated with increased security in airports, American citizens have been recast as militarized spectators, brought together through the production, circulation, and consumption of these visual artifacts. Beyond the Checkpoint reveals that the visual is essential to the prosecution of the GWOT domestically and abroad, and that it functions as a crucial mechanism in the ongoing formation of the U.S. state itself and an essential component of contemporary American citizenship.
Tracing the connections between citizenship and spectatorship, and moving beyond the close reading of visual representations, this book focuses on the institutions and actors that create, monitor, and regulate the visual landscape of the GWOT. Adelman looks around and through common images to follow the complex patterns of practice by which institutions and audiences engage them in various contexts. In the process, she proposes a new methodology for studying visual cultures of conflict, and related phenomena like violence, terror, and suffering that are notoriously difficult to represent.
Attending to previously unanalyzed dimensions of this conflict, this book illustrates the complexity of GWOT visual culture and the variegated experiences of citizenship that result as Americans navigate this terrain.
Bonnie Miller, author of “From Liberation to Conquest: The Visual and Popular Cultures of the Spanish-American War of 1898″ (The University of Massachusetts Press, 2011) writes, “Ambitious in scope and argument, this book stands to make an important contribution to the fields of visual culture, international relations/political science, and American studies.”

"Hide and Seek"/ "Chuppan Chupai" is an award-winning documentary directed by Saad Khan that explores the lives of four transgender, or "hijra," people and their daily trials and triumphs while living in the relatively conservative gender constructs of Pakistan, the second most populous Islamic country in the world. The film depicts the secret yet open lives of a group of Pakistani sexual minorities, raising questions about transgender activism, religion, underground gay life, social acceptance and collective familial customs of transgenders in urban Pakistan.

Description (Fall, 2014)
(applications accepted on a rolling basis from April 18 through
August 8)
The UMBC Relationship Violence Prevention Advocates program is a comprehensive program
funded by a grant from Verizon. The
program changes each year and is designed to educate the UMBC Community on
specific relationship violence prevention information. The goals of the program are to
systematically raise awareness and support for a campus to be without
relationship violence and create an environment that encourages healthy
relationships and the victims of relationship violence to come forward and
receive support. Specific components of the program include:

Relationship
violence prevention education and training for volunteer students, faculty and
staff advocates who represent various groups and populations on campus. These
advocates will help to educate the campus community about relationship violence
prevention through their networks, and
serve as referral sources for those who have experienced or are impacted by
relationship abuse/violence or have questions about unhealthy relationships.

Skills Program via the UMBC Counseling Center

Awareness,

Bystander
Intervention training through the Green Dot program (VP Student Affairs Office)
General Description:
UMBC Relationship Violence
Prevention Advocates are UMBC community members who: a) are able to provide
relationship/dating/intimate partner violence prevention information to their
community networks, b) observe the UMBC community and take notice of and
report community issues related to
relationship violence to advocate trainers, c) encourage bystander intervention
techniques within UMBC community network, d) make appropriate referrals, e)
provide helpful resource information to their UMBC community network and
individuals, f) support violence prevention efforts on campus, and g) volunteer
to staff events (tabling, etc).
1. Must attend training on August 25, 2014 from 9:30am-4pm
2. Must attend the following Friday meetings
at noon- August 29; September 5, 12, 19; October 3, 17, 31; November 14;
December 5
3. Must share educational information
with your network of friends, colleagues, student organizations, team members, and
at campus events
4. Must utilize skills to make
referrals, provide resources, intervene safely when necessary using bystander
intervention skills.
Training topics for advocates will include: characteristics of unhealthy
relationships, domestic violence and abuse, healthy relationship skills,
bystander intervention, on and off campus resources, helping and referral
skills, men’s role in preventing violence, presentation skills, changing
culture, identity group needs, etc.

Discovering Archaeology Day at JPPM!
St. Leonard- April is Maryland Archaeology Month…how will you celebrate? Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum's first event of the season is Discovering Archaeology Day, which is held on Saturday, April 19 from 10AM – 5PM. This event is free and all ages are welcome. JPPM is home to approximately 70 identified archaeological sites and is the site of the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory or MAC Lab for short.
The day will consist of tours of the MAC Lab and visits to the ongoing excavation of an 18th century plantation. Both the JPPM's FAQ Archaeology and War of 1812 exhibits will be open throughout the day. Also enjoy displays, games and activities presented by professional archaeologists from throughout Maryland. Ask questions, participate in hands on activities and learn about this exciting field!
Ride our solar powered bus or take a walk to the Indian Village to enjoy demonstrations and activities. Do you have a historical item you know little about? Bring it to the Artifact ID table where a professional will look at it. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum, a state museum of archaeology and home to the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory, is a program of the Maryland Historical Trust, a division of the Maryland Department of Planning. As some of you may know, April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Attached you will find a copy of the Sexual Assault Awareness Month event flyer. 2014 Calendar of Events
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Every 2 minutes, someone in America is sexually assaulted.
1 in 5 college women experience a sexual assault.
95% of college-aged victims know their attacker.
These are just a few statistics to highlight why this month of awareness is so very important for our campus and our greater community. We have several events this April that will honor the voices and experiences of survivors of sexual assault. Additionally, there are events that will seek to raise awareness about sexual assault and the importance of effective consent.
The event calendar is attached to this news story. Please feel free to download, mark your calendar with the events you plan on attending, and share the word with other students, staff, and faculty.

Last year's Women's History Month's national theme was Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination: Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. At UMBC we honored last year's theme by partnering with the Center for Women in Technology (CWIT) to feature some of their amazing students participating in technology in the engineering and information technology fields.
Since last year's spotlights were so meaningful and successful in highlighting the important work of women in STEM fields, we're back at it for year two. This year's national theme is Celebrating Women of Character, Courage, and Commitment. Though there is no specific mention of STEM, it is impossible to deny that acts of courage and commitment from women (and their allies) in STEM occur everyday. So with that, we are honored to bring you the 2nd Annual CWIT Showcase in honor of Women's History Month.

Describe what sparked your interest STEM and the journey to choosing your major.
What primarily sparked my interest was the fact that I was always told that I couldn't do it. Being continuously told that engineering was for men made me want to do it even more. I guess I like a good challenge! I chose chemical engineering because I realized just how diverse the job prospects were after graduation; from cosmetics to consumer goods to refineries it seemed like there was nothing they couldn't do!
Tell us about an internship, research experience or project that you are proud of.
An internship I am really proud of was the one I did last year at the L'Oreal Research and Innovation campus in New Jersey. It was my dream to work for a cosmetic company and acquiring the internship alone was something to be proud of. I really liked that my project had a direct impact on the company, my findings would actually be used in their formulations. It was really cool.
Who are your role models in the engineering or IT field?
My role models tend to shift every now and then, I think women who are able to balance a strong work life and home life are the ones that really inspire me. They are the ones I often ask "how do you do it?". Every time, its a slightly different answer but one thing still remains the same - hard work!
In your experience, how has being a woman in engineering or IT demanded character, courage or commitment?
There are definitely some moments that stick out to you more than others. You constantly wonder why your opinion is being disregarded first hand or why you need to speak louder to get your point across. It's an ongoing battle but it takes a lot of character, keeping professional and realizing that you have to gain the respect of people and not just expect it to be handed to you. If you do good quality work, people will notice and you won't need to speak up so loudly any more.
The Center for Women In Technology (CWIT) is dedicated to increasing the representation of women in the creation of technology in the engineering and information technology fields. CWIT efforts begin with nurturing a strong group of Scholars, grow to building community resources for other women in these majors, extend to fostering a healthy gender climate and ITE pedagogy in College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT) departments, and finally expand into outreach efforts to increase interest in technical careers. A successful program for female-friendly engineering and information technology education at UMBC will help make UMBC a destination for women (and men) interested in technical careers and serve as a national model for other universities.

On March 25, 1694, the first European settlers arrived on the shores of the Province of Maryland. Now commemorated as a state holiday, Maryland Day honors the history of the Old Line State.
It's fitting, then, for today to be the day that our state took another step towards adding protections for all Marylanders, regardless of gender identity or expression, continuing to lead the way as a state on the right side of U.S. history.
