Join the UMGC community for a fascinating conversation and moderated Q&A session with Grace Young, who is on a mission to save America's most iconic Chinese communities. Growing up in San Francisco, Young spent many happy hours in that city's Chinatown, where the small neighborhood atmosphere and cultural richness helped to inspire her career as a celebrity culinary guru. In recent years, however, Chinatowns in many cities have struggled to survive and the economic realities of the pandemic have caused many businesses to close and populations to plummet. That's why Young has added another title to her already impressive resume: "the accidental voice for Chinatown." Partnering with a broad range of food industry, educational, and media organizations, she is fostering support and positive exposure for Chinatowns throughout the country by focusing on how they came to be, their impact on the community, and the challenges of preserving them
About the Speaker Grace Young is a multi-award-winning cookbook author, culinary historian, and filmmaker. Among her many accolades, she has received the Julia Child Award and the James Beard Foundation's Humanitarian of the Year Award, and was also a USA Today Women of the Year honoree. Often called the "poet laureate of the wok," Young has devoted much of her career to demystifying and preserving the traditions of the ancient iron cooking utensil for use in contemporary kitchens.

Or, a gentle recap of an endlessly busy semester, and a philosophy of activism
One of the main struggles people have getting involved with activism is getting started, knowing where to go, what your strengths are, and how long you can keep going. Ironically, I’m having the same issue with this blog post. At the beginning of the semester, I had a grand plan of detailing a long list of things I’ve done, and providing places for readers to go to get involved. Coming up to the end, I’ve been struggling with the concept of being ‘done’.
What have I ‘done’? What ‘counts’ as success? Everyone around me is so affirming that Good Things Have Happened because of my work, which I know, logically, is true. There is still a part that feels like the work is incomplete, and the perfectionist in me doesn’t like incomplete endings.
But, that’s really what you have to do, make sure the project continues after you leave it. Activism that can continue is the goal, and inspiring others to take your place (and, of course, change it up in their unique way). What I hope I’ve done, if the title is any indication, is helping make UMBC feel more like a ‘home’ for neurodivergent folk. Home is a loaded word, in my mind, but the ‘home’ I want is one rooted in support and care; unconditional and enduring. A ‘home’ is something you feel comfortable leaving and coming back to, even if you don’t have a reason why.
A lot of firsts happened this semester: the UMBC Neurodiversity Club, Headspace’s creation, and other events centering neurodivergent people. I know, without a doubt, I’ve done well. But I could do more. Another year as an undergrad student, and I can iron out the details, make better what’s in place, another B.A, do a real GWST capstone project around autism.
Then I think, “and then what”? With activism, it seems like you will always find more work. It simply will just be there. What hits harder now, is that with RFK Jr. as head of HHS, and his apparent disdain for the lives of autistic people, the feeling of not doing ‘enough’ is heavy. Part of this is likely fear because of chronic illnesses, wanting to make sure I do good while my body is still (relatively) in decent shape. I know UMBC has so many students willing to cause some trouble, and they (you) will keep up the move to a more (neuro)diversity-affirming world. We are far from being a ‘home’ yet, but there’s attention on where we’re struggling, and more space has been intentionally carved out for us.
I thought it would be clever to leave this off on an unsatisfying conclusion, but I think instead, I’ll leave off with a few significant organizations that I found so helpful (and most are run but autistic individuals!)!

Please, get involved with the neurodivergent community in some way, especially if you aren’t. It will be odd, it will feel uncomfortable, but that is how you know you’re learning and unlearning and relearning. Take care of yourselves, and a reminder that activism can look like anything, loud and quiet, big and small!

Applications Open for Women's, Gender & Equity Center Graduate Assistantship 2025-26
Applications are open for the Women's, Gender & Equity Center Graduate Assistantship for the 2025-26 School year!
The Women's, Gender, & Equity Center at UMBC is seeking applications for a Graduate Assistantship (GA) for Fall 2025, with potential continuation into Spring 2026. This role emphasizes assessment, data analysis, and research to support the Center's initiatives.
Qualifications:
- Current graduate student at UMBC enrolled for Fall 2025 and planning to enroll for Spring 2026.
- Academic good standing (minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0).
- Demonstrated commitment to advancing gender equity through an intersectional feminist lens.
- Experience or strong interest in assessment, data collection, and research methodologies.
- Proficiency or willingness to learn data analysis software/tools (e.g., SPSS, Excel, Qualtrics).
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assist with the design and implementation of assessment strategies for programs and services offered by the Women's, Gender, & Equity Center.
- Collect, manage, and analyze qualitative and quantitative data to evaluate program effectiveness and student engagement.
- Compile research findings into accessible reports and presentations for diverse campus stakeholders.
- Conduct literature reviews and background research to inform and enhance Center programming.
- Collaborate closely with staff to translate research findings into actionable recommendations.
- Plan and facilitate programs and support groups specifically tailored for graduate students
- Contribute to writing blog posts or brief articles reflecting research outcomes and insights relevant to gender equity and social justice.
Application Requirements:
To be considered for this Graduate Assistantship position, applicants must complete the following steps:
- Fill out the online Google Form application.
- Submit through the provided Box submission link a cover letter highlighting your interest in gender equity, assessment, group facilitation, and research.

- Submit through the provided Box submission link one writing sample (maximum of 4 pages, double-spaced), ideally demonstrating research or assessment skills. First-person perspective writing samples preferred.

5th Annual Black & Latine/x Celebration & Awards

5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Skylight, The Commons 3rd Floor
This celebration is in recognition of the achievements of UMBC's Black and Latina/e/o/x graduating students as well as contributing community members. Black and Latine/x students have made invaluable contributions to the wider UMBC community. This celebration is in recognition of Black and Latine/x graduating students and of all the allied staff, faculty, alumni, and programs that work to support them.
During the gathering, we’ll enjoy food together, we’ll showcase keynote speakers, student musical and dance performances, and award presentations to honor student contributions, as well as the faculty and staff who’ve contributed to their success.
Light refreshments and appetizers will be served starting at 5:30 pm for all guests in attendance.
Graduates must check in no later than 5:45 p.m. The program will begin promptly at 6 p.m.
Dress code: We encourage all attendees and graduates to dress in their "celebration best." While cap and gown are not required, we would be thrilled to see attendees embracing cultural attires.

This celebration commemorates the achievements of graduating UMBC students while celebrating the vast cultural diversity of Asian communities and heritage on our campus. We recognize the difficulty of choosing just one identifier or term to capture the vast diversity of all people with heritage in the Asian continent, representing 49 countries and hundreds of cultures. We seek to honor the breadth of experience of people across Asia - East, South, Southwest, West, and Central Asia.
During the gathering, we’ll enjoy food together, we’ll showcase keynote speakers, student musical and dance performances, and award presentations to honor student contributions, as well as the faculty and staff who’ve contributed to their success.
Light refreshments and appetizers will be served starting at 5:30 pm for all guests in attendance.
Graduates must check in no later than 5:45 p.m. The program will begin promptly at 6 p.m.
Dress code: We encourage all attendees and graduates to dress in their "celebration best." While cap and gown are not required, we would be thrilled to see attendees embracing cultural attires.
For those interested in attending, RSVP HERE (https://forms.gle/1Yg5fMgzj2VsdfGC8)! Graduates that RSVP between Monday, April 14th and Monday, April 28th at 6pm will be highlighted during the event and receive honorary graduation cords.
Folx are still welcome to attend even if there is no RSVP. Graduating students can register to be recognized day-of, but food and seating is only guranteed for those who RSVP'ed.

This form is the correct place to sign up to help with ANY of the 3 Celebration & Awards:Asian Cultural Celebration & Awards, taking place May 15th in the UC Ballroom from 5:30-8pm
Lavender Celebration & Awards, taking place May 19th in Commons Skylight from 5:30-8pm
Black & Latine/x Celebration & Awards, taking place May 20th in Commons Skylight from 5:30-8pm
We are seeking help with the following volunteer shifts and tasks for all events:
Set-up from 4-5:30pm: Set up of the space, including decorations, tables, tech, check-in tables, etc. We will also be seeking assistance with balloons, but understand they're very polarizing, so that will be a separate opt-in!
Check-in & Greeters from 5:30-6:15pm: Checking in students who are being recognized during the celebration, greeting guests as they arrive, answering questions, directing to restrooms, fireside, etc.
Clean up from 7:30-8:30pm (approx): Clean-up of the space and return of items to the Mosaic

Join us on Thursday, May 1st for a vibrant, day-long celebration honoring the contributions of our immigrant communities at UMBC and beyond.
Morning Kickoff
Start the day by showing appreciation for our custodial staff—many of whom are immigrants—for their essential role in creating a welcoming and thriving campus environment.

Keynote Speaker: Jessy DeSantis
Raised in a Nicaraguan household in Miami and now based in Baltimore, Jessy DeSantis is a self-taught artist whose bold, colorful paintings explore themes of identity, culture, and connection. Drawing inspiration from nature, food, family, and their Central American roots, Jessy will share their powerful story navigating culture, identity, and the art world.
