Intern of the Week: Jamie Denton for English & MCS!

<Tagline>Check out her internship with Angel Publishing!</Tagline>

Name: Jamie Denton

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Angel Publishing

Position Title: Copy Editor Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s): B.A. English Literature, Media &
    Communication Studies

Current Class Level: Junior

Work Term: Summer 2019

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or
research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

As a copy editor intern, my day-to-day
responsibilities consisted of editing written material—editorials, reports,
journals, and promotions—in accordance with house style for over five
investment publications. Additionally, I resolved ambiguities in syntax, gaps
in logic, grammatical issues, and formatting errors by refining written
work—basically, I ensured that all written material was error free and easy to
    read for the company's clients.

Describe the process of obtaining your position.
When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I actually found my position
outside of UMBCworks, although it's definitely a very helpful tool I've used in
the past to obtain other internships. Essentially, after I found the position
on my own, I submitted my resume along with a few writing samples. After the
company reviewed these materials, the head copy editor contacted me and
requested that I complete a copy editor test to gauge my skill set and
determine if I possessed the abilities required for the job. Once I completed
this test and sent it back, the company then asked me to come in for an
interview... and the rest is history!

What have you enjoyed the most about your
    position or organization?

The abundance of information
I've learned! I can definitely say that I've left this internship as a
stronger, more well-rounded writer and editor.

The head copy editor of the
company is extremely intelligent, and I’ve gained an incredible amount of
knowledge on copy editing and the career as a whole. This internship experience
has been so informative, and I can't wait to apply everything I've learned to
other aspects of my academic career, such as my English classes, working as a
tutor in the Writing Center, and my role as Copy Manager of The
    Retriever.

How do you believe you have made an impact
    through your work?

As a copy editor intern, I'm
merely one step of the long and arduous writing process. I enhance the writing
of writers and editors to ensure that the financial material they're releasing
to their clients is clear, error-free, and easy to understand so that clients
can then use this information to advance themselves financially, gain more
insight on the market, and accumulate wealth.

What advice would you give to another student
who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Definitely visit the Career Center! It can be a
bit intimidating because you may be unsure of what to expect or may feel
underprepared but getting your resume and other work-related material carefully
evaluated by professionals is an essential part in making yourself a more
desirable candidate. So, take advantage of the many free resources you're
provided with; otherwise, you're just doing yourself a disservice!

Intern of the Week: Daniel Sanchez-Mendoza for Biochemistry!

<Tagline>Check out his internship with NIH!</Tagline>

Name: Daniel Sanchez-Mendoza

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: National
Institute of Health, National Eye Institute, Ophthalmic Genetics and Visual
    Function Branch

Position Title: Summer Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s): Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Current Class Level: Sophomore

Work Term: Summer 2019

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or
research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

I was handling a temporary project looking into
characterizing ZNF503 zebrafish mutants by CRIPSR CAS9 mutagenesis and
identifying a viable male and female mutant to produce 100% mutant offspring.
ZNF503 is a gene associated with optic coloboma, defects in eye development.
Specifically, it causes the malformation of the optic fissure closure, which
prevents a complete fusion of the optic cup that leads to blindness. My duties
included setting up multiple breeding pairs on a weekly basis, collection of
any embryos from the breedings, performing PCR to amplify the desired deletion
mutation, and performing gel electrophoresis to identify any mutants and
confirm whether the pair is viable to produce mutants. Afterwards, I set up
some of the embryos for cryosectioning and, using those slides, I immunostained
them with specific antibodies that are prevalent in the eye.

Describe the process of obtaining your position.
When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I heard about the internship
last summer from my neighbor. He told me that the National Eye Institute has a
DIVRO program focused on diversity in visual research and ophthalmology which
sounded like an amazing opportunity for me. The application window ran
throughout the winter where I applied sometime in February, and by late March I
received an email with a position offer.

What have you enjoyed the most about your
    position or organization?

Getting to know everyone at the
branch and learning about the research that they have dedicated many years to.
Much of this research has direct impact on human lives.

How do you believe you have made an impact
    through your work?

Although my work was
preliminary, it has provided the foundation for further studies down the line.

What advice would you give to another student
who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Reach out and get connections with people in the
area of research that interests you. Look into the research that the Private
Investigators are working on to get an idea of their work and show similar
interest when you reach out. Also, fill out the application early to get a
better chance of getting a position.

is going “On the Road” to the NIH National Eye Institute on October 25, 2019. Take a tour of the facility and hear about internship
and future career opportunities. Transportation is provided, but an RSVP is

Intern of the Week: Agatha Turyahikayo for Computer Science!

<Tagline>Check out her internship with Apple!</Tagline>

Name: Agatha Turyahikayo

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Apple

Position Title: Software Engineering Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s): Computer Science Major, Music Minor

Current Class Level: Junior

Work Term: Summer 2019

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or
research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

I was an intern on the Mail Team, which develops
the Mail app for macOS and iOS. All of my work was under a non-disclosure
agreement, but I was working on the Mail Frameworks team, which does all the
backend engineering. I was working with the programming languages Swift and
Objective-C. I also used Github to do source control related things, like pull
    requests and code review.

Describe the process of obtaining your position.
When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I went to the Grace Hopper
Celebration, the world’s largest conference for women in tech, in September
2018 with a sponsorship from the Center for Women in Technology (CWIT). The
conference has a big career fair, so I went to a ton of company booths and gave
them my resume and elevator pitch. One of the engineers at the Apple booth gave
my resume to her manager and by the end of the 3-day conference I had 2
technical interviews and was extended an internship offer. To prepare for the
technical interviews, I did mock whiteboard interviews, practice problems on
websites like Hackerrank and Leetcode, and read through a lot of a book called Cracking
    the Coding Interview.

What have you enjoyed the most about your
    position or organization?

Learning about macOS and iOS
development for the first time at Apple was a really unique opportunity,
because I sat and worked alongside engineers who have worked at Apple for many
years. These engineers have developed fundamental software features,
frameworks, and paradigms that currently exist in Apple devices. I also enjoyed
seeing the scale of the software development process at Apple, since it affects
billions of active devices and millions of customers worldwide.

How do you believe you have made an impact
    through your work?

I had all of the weight for
making critical decisions for my intern project, so it allowed me to have a lot
of freedom in how I chose to implement it.

What advice would you give to another student
who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Apply to every internship you can. Bring a ton
of resumes to career fairs and have an elevator pitch prepared. Talk to
companies you don't think you have a chance with.

Connect with Agatha: agatha3@umbc.edu

Want to be the next Intern of the Week? Make sure to fill out this form and stay tuned.
