Intern of the Week: Raghurai Kulkarni for HC Computing!

<Tagline>Check out his internship with Mobux.</Tagline>

Name: Raghurai Kulkarni

Internship, Co-op or Research Site:Mobux

Position Title:UI/UX Designer

Major(s)/Minor(s): Human Centered Computing

Current Class Level:Master’s Student

Work Term: Summer 2019

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

Working for start-ups is very different and varies a great deal from start-up to start-up. I began by learning about the software that we develop and then created all the UX (user experience) documentation like journey maps, personas, etc. When you work for a start-up you have to wear a lot of hats; I am an intern but I led one full-fledged project. For this project, I developed a system development cycle according to company capacity and requirement. I did pretty much everything from requirements gathering, research, and overseeing the implementation. Sometimes I handle the implementation myself if I can while the other engineers are busy with core features.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

First, I tried to reconstruct my resume so it could pass all of the application tracking systems which many companies are using to filter out applicants. Then, I began to monitor UMBCworks and internships.com. I was a little bit delayed in applying for internships because I was coding my portfolio instead of making one through websites like Squarespace and Wix. However, I applied to my current internship in May and went through a couple of interview rounds to start work in July.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

UX is a very broad field and different companies have different definitions of what parts of the UX process fits into their users experience. Smaller companies have to do all the same work with less staff, so I was able to try various things and experiment with my designs.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Mobux is a mobile experience company and we try to invent new ways to interact with users. We research a lot about users, mobile devices, trends, and mobile usage habits. So, I guess we are striving to make the mobile experience more enjoyable and fun.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

My advice would be to apply early. Also, it’s not just about being smart and technical, but you have to possess strong conversation and networking skills, too. Going to Career Center events and workshops can definitely help with this.

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week?Make sure to fill out this form and stay tuned.
How to Write a Stand-Out Cover Letter

<Tagline>A how-to guide on cover letters</Tagline>

The Career Fair has passed and now it’s time to start applying to jobs! One of the keys to succeeding in a job application is to write a standout cover letter. Cover letters are formal business letters meant to get across who you are as a person, your job qualifications, and how you can add to whatever company or organization you want to work for.

Here are some quick tips for writing a standout cover letter:

Structure your cover letter like a letter. You should include your permanent address, the date, the name of the hiring manager, their job title, the company name, and the company address.

Match your resume. There shouldn’t be anything written in your cover letter that isn’t reflected in your resume. Additionally, you shouldn’t just walk the reader through your resume; the cover letter is where you give more details and really connect your skills to the job position.

Focus on your strengths. Display confidence and positivity. The cover letter is where you can really show off your strengths, so try not to focus on what you lack.

Minimize the use of “I” Be sure to vary your sentence structure to make reading your cover letter more interesting. Try not to use the word “I” too much, use “you” and “your” more frequently. It’s best to talk about what you can add to the company rather than what you can get out of working there.

Keep it short. The most effective cover letters are concise and clear.

Proofread. Spell-check isn’t enough! Be sure to proofread your resume and double-check that you are using the correct words for the correct context.

Cover letters may seem confusing and intimidating, but they don’t have to be. Be sure to utilize the Career Center resources available to you! We review cover letters during drop-in appointments Mondays through Thursdays from 2 pm to 4 pm and on Fridays from 12 pm to 4 pm. Of course, you can always make a longer 30- or 60-minute appointment with a Career Specialist through UMBCworks as well.

Brown Center for Entrepreneurship as their Social Media Marketing Intern. Each week, I create and post material on our Instagram, Twitter, and myUMBC groups. I am also responsible for updating/enhancing the website through WordPress. In addition, I attend all of our events and take photos of our guest speakers.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I heard of this position on UMBCworks last spring. Once I saw the application come out, I did not hesitate to apply because I knew this was going to be something I would really enjoy doing. Prior to applying, I went to the Career Center a few times to ensure that my resume was good to go and my interview skills were ready. Later, I heard back right away after applying and followed through with the process of obtaining my position through two more interviews before receiving the final offer.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I love working with my boss and having the freedom to create content on all social media platforms. More and more students have been more interested in the Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship, and I’m looking forward to the Spring semester.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Don't be afraid to create and work on something that you haven’t before.
Intern of the Week: Aren Warner for GES!

<Tagline>Check out their internship with AECOM.</Tagline>

Name: Aren Warner

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: AECOM

Position Title: GIS Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s): Geography and Environmental Systems

Current Class Level: Senior

Work Term: Spring 2020

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

As a GIS intern in the water division of AECOM, my main roles consist of collecting, editing, and mapping geospatial data for ongoing water infrastructure projects with clients in both the private and public sectors. These projects can be on the scale of a local city, county or across several states under a large corporation. This variety of work creates a diverse day-to-day workflow for me. I have been able to learn the submission process for data edits or newly created/updated maps to the client and how to receive and respond to any incoming feedback from these submissions. With newly edited or received data, I have also been able to use my skills in cartography to create maps for later use in online GIS services such as ArcGIS Enterprise. I also get the opportunity to go into the field for data collection using Collector for ArcGIS, a new and valuable tool for real-time geospatial data entry directly from a worksite.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I first heard about this internship from my advisor last fall. As my graduation is expected in May of 2020, I informed them that I was actively searching for upcoming job opportunities or internships that could extend into a full-time position after graduation. They connected me with a UMBC alum who would later become my supervisor. I filled out an application and was fortunate enough to be brought in for an interview where I was offered employment soon thereafter.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

The work environment at AECOM Baltimore is incredibly friendly and tight knit. The team I work with relies on cooperation, so help is always available from other team members. I also feel incredibly valued as an intern for I have responsibilities that I never thought that I would be given. The fast-paced nature of my job and the ability to directly contribute to projects has been incredible.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

One of the most rewarding parts of the job is seeing my work making a difference in a project and watching it all come together. My impact is clear when my team thanks me for my input in a discussion or thoughts on a workflow. As we all submit our individual components to an ongoing task and mark it complete, I get a sense for just how important my work really is.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Connections are very important, but of those connections, the most important are those that know you the best. Someone who has detailed knowledge of your professional ambitions can personally find job opportunities in an environment of overwhelming possibilities. Before talking to my advisor, I felt like I had too many options to choose from and didn't know what the right choice would be. After they connected me to this internship, I have never been more positive on knowing what I want to do for a career.

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week? Make sure to fill out this form and stay tuned.
