Is This for Real? Detecting Fraudulent Job Offers

<Tagline>Career Center Tips</Tagline>

Picture this: You see a description for a dream job. The title sounds great, the requirements are minimal, and the pay is fantastic. In fact, you can apply quickly via email or through a job board (no cover letter or application required!). Is this too good to be true? Maybe. Maybe not.

As a Career Center advisor, I’d want to dig a little deeper. Often, scammers will post fraudulent positions on third-party job boards with the hopes of getting applicants. Other times, these scammers will reach out directly to you (usually via email or social media) to invite you to apply or interview for a position. You should ALWAYS do your research, especially if it seems too easy.

How do I determine if the position/company in question is, in fact, sketchy? Look for the following red flags:

A company offers you a position you haven't applied for OR invites you to apply for a position without any previous contact. The latter could be legitimate but requires further investigation–see below.

The recruiter’s email address does not match the domain of the company website.

A company is requiring you to put money forward. For example:

You must provide your credit card, bank account numbers, or other personal financial documentation.

The position requires an initial investment, such as a payment by wire service or courier.

You receive an unexpectedly large check (Note: NEVER cash these! These will typically bounce and result in overdraft fees on top of dealing with a scammer having your bank account information.)

The posting or email outreach includes many spelling and grammatical errors.

The pay seems way too high for the position’s requirements. The description of the duties may be vague and focus instead on the compensation and benefits.

You are asked to provide a photo of yourself.

The employer responds very quickly (within hours of applying).

The employer contacts you by phone, but does not provide a number to call them back.

Ways to proactively avoid job scams:

Look at the company’s website. Does it have an index that tells you what the site is about; or does it contain information only about the job you are interested in? Scammers often create quick, basic web pages that seem legit at first glance.

Watch for anonymity. If it is difficult to find an address, actual contact, company name, etc., this is cause to proceed with caution. Fraud postings are illegal, so scammers will try to keep themselves well-hidden.

Google the employer’s phone number, fax number, address and email address. If it does not appear connected to an actual business organization, this is a red flag. Better Business Bureau, Hoovers, and AT&T’s Anywho can be used to verify organizations.

The Career Center is here to support you. If you encounter a position that you fear may be fraudulent, don’t hesitate to reach out to us (careers@umbc.edu).

Learn more:

https://careers.umbc.edu/fraud/

https://www.forbes.com/sites/ashleystahl/2019/06/18/dream-job-or-scam-how-to-know-if-a-job-posting-is-legitimate/#3a917df7477b

Tips for Succeeding in Remote Positions

<Tagline>Read About it Now!</Tagline>

As a result of the pandemic the world is facing, many internships and jobs have been moved to virtual spaces in an effort to encourage social distancing. Don’t worry,it is possible to have a rewarding, meaningful experience while working remotely. If you find yourself in a newly appointed remote situation, consider the tips below to make the most of your experience. This list may also be helpful as you navigate your summer options at companies that are planning to host remote interns.

Communicate clearly and often. While communication is a key part of any position, in remote situations you do not have the luxury of being in the same space as everyone else. Dropping by to chat with your co-workers or supervisor whenever you feel like it won't be as easy. Make sure you set up clear lines of communication, or even schedule more frequent check-ins.

Master your technology. While most people have some technological capabilities these days, that does not mean we are experts. You will likely find yourself being challenged to use technology in new ways while working remotely. As you are exposed to new online platforms and programs, take the time to make notes, figure things out, and ask questions. It is okay not to know how something works, and you will benefit from seeking guidance either from manuals or help from co-workers/supervisors.

Consider your work environment. When working remotely, try to find a space where you can comfortably work, but away from where you might conduct leisure activities. This can help break up your day and distinguish between your working hours and your personal time. For those with family or roommates around, consider a discussion on how to share the space and time in your homes to allow everyone to work effectively.

Follow a schedule. Another way to keep on track is to set a daily/weekly schedule for yourself. Especially on days where other items can compete for time and attention, you can set yourself up for success by focusing on work during times when you are less likely to be interrupted.

Have you already obtained a virtual internship, co-op, or research position for summer? We recommend that you register for the Career Center’s Intern Success Practicum, a zero-credit, pass/fail, entirely free course that results in a transcript notation for your experience. Practicum students have the advantage of being connected to a Career Center advisor who can help you establish a strong relationship with your site supervisor and advocate for yourself as needed—two crucial ingredients of a great virtual experience.
Become a Career Peer for the 2020-2021 Academic Year

<Tagline>Current Job Opening + Q&A with a current Career Peer</Tagline>

The Career Center is currently recruiting for Career Peers for the 2020-2021 academic year. Become a Career Peer to:

Gain leadership skills

Help fellow students with their resumes

Learn about career development

Improve your presentation skills

We encourage interested students to please consider submitting your application as soon as possible. We would be interested in speaking with you before the end of the Spring 2020 semester.

Apply in UMBCworks, position # 9316046 or 9316047.

Want to know more about being a Career Peer? Check out this Q&A with one of our current Career Peers, Tyra Hill:

Name: Tyra Hill

Position Title: Career Center Career Peer

Major(s)/Minor(s): Psychology major, with a Biology concentration

Current Class Level: Junior

Tell us about your role as a Career Peer including your weekly responsibilities.

The job responsibilities tend to vary and it really depends on the day, but some of the tasks that are always consistent as a Career Peer include conducting drop-ins [resume reviews], producing newsletter e-mails to be sent to students in various majors, producing blog posts, and any task or project that may be asked of me by my supervisor or another Career Center staff member. I also presented workshops, and staffed information tables for various events. Around the time of the Career Fair, I helped out as well.

What new skill sets did you develop as a result of being a Career Peer?

Being a Career Peer helped me become a lot better at speaking publicly. Something that we often do is present workshops and staff information tables, which gave me a lot more practice speaking in front of others. I learned how to properly critique resumes and cover letters, which is one of the main tasks that my job requires. I also developed the ability to work a lot more quickly. Working in the Career Center also gave me a lot of insight about developing myself professionally, the job search process, and how to interact with others in professional settings.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. How and when did you learn of the position? How did you submit your application? What was the interview like?

I learned about this position on UMBCworks around the end of the Spring 2019. I submitted my application through UMBCworks, as well as my class schedule, resume, and cover letter. I was contacted by my now supervisor to come in for an interview. The interview was about an hour long, and the interview questions were definitely extremely relevant to a lot of the situations that I encountered once I became a Career Peer.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position as a Career Peer?

I enjoyed being able to help my peers the most. I am the type of person who really likes helping others and it comes very naturally to me, so this job was extremely fulfilling for me personally because it really allows you to make a difference in the lives of many students. College can be such a confusing time and it’s often filled with uncertainty, so being able to alleviate any of the anxiety that comes along with the college process, college experience, or job search for any of my peers is very enjoyable to me. Nobody knows better than a current college student how hard things can be for other students, so it’s definitely nice to be able to help those who are in the same stage of receiving an education as I am.

I also enjoyed the amount that I learned as a Career Peer. I often hear students who also work talk about how much time work takes up in their day, and how they feel drained from their jobs. I never felt that way as a Career Peer. While it can be challenging, you truly learn so much that ultimately helps you grow as an individual, student, and as a young professional.

How do you believe you have made an impact on UMBC students through your work?

I believe that I have helped UMBC students better explore their options, expand their body of knowledge surrounding college and the job search; provided them tools to aid in their professional development, and given them more confidence about the work that they have done and the experiences that they’ve gained. The really cool thing about being a Career Peer is that you can give other students honest advice based on the experiences that you have had, and this means a lot to students when it is coming from one of their peers. To have a student reach out and let me know that they got a job with a resume that I helped them with, or were able to take advantage of an opportunity that I told them about is amazing to hear, and speaks to the amount of impact that being a Career Peer can have.

What advice would you give to another student who is applying to the Career Peer position?

To another student applying for the Career Peer position, I would say to work on your resume (our Career Guide has great examples if you haven’t seen it already), and don’t be afraid to ask questions and think outside of the box. Also, for those who are called in for interviews, always remember to be professional, compassionate, and let your personality show! If you are someone who truly enjoys helping others, and is looking for an extremely fulfilling on-campus job, this position is definitely for you.

When did you hear of the position? How did you submit your application? I was able to meet with Dustin and learned about the available graphic design internship at the Career Center. I reached out to him afterward and applied for the position through UMBCworks. A few weeks after, I was contacted for an interview with Dustin. During the interview, we reviewed my portfolio, which allowed me to showcase the projects I had worked on. We talked about the position’s expectations and what would be my responsibilities as an intern. Within a few weeks, I got an email for the job offer, and I was super excited to accept my first design job!

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or the Career Center?

Since this position was my first design job, I enjoyed learning everything about design and the work environment.
