When I was working at this lab in person, I injected tumors into the tibias of live animal models, operated technology for X-rays and ultrasounds on animal models, completed stress experiments and necropsies on mice and rats, and performed western blots, cell cultures, and DNA methylation analyses. With virtual work, there was a lot more focus on literature review and data analysis. We would have meetings where research was discussed, and I would be assigned specific topics to present on. We also began using a new proteomic analysis program to identify and compare pathways of primary osteosarcoma tumors and secondary pulmonary tumors to determine how commonly upregulated pathways associated with pulmonary metastasis in osteosarcoma can be inhibited. My responsibility was to work with the other undergraduate researchers in the lab to figure out how the program worked, use it to analyze the data, and present relevant findings at lab meetings.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. It gave me the opportunity to collaborate with other undergraduate colleagues to teach ourselves something new and to share the knowledge with the researchers in the lab, as the program was new to all of them as well.

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week?Make sure to fill out this form and stay tuned. nonprofit or social ventures. Students get training and experience to

Internships last one semester (15 weeks) and students will work, on
average, 8 to 10 hours per week. Students receive a stipend of $1,500

engage in projects and activities that further expose them to the social
     entrepreneurial mindset.

Intern of the Week: Divya Koindala for Information Systems

<Tagline>Check out Divya's internship with Ardent Privacy</Tagline>

Name:Divya Koindala

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Ardent Privacy

Position Title:Marketing Analyst

Major(s)/Minor(s):Information Systems

Current Class Level: Senior

Work Term: Fall 2020

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

I am a Marketing Analyst intern at a start-up IT company called Ardent Privacy and my day-to-day responsibilities go from administrative duties, like scheduling meetings, to attending international meetings with the CEO. I also use marketing tools such as Microsoft office and HubSpot for targeted marketing. In doing so, I have to make sure the right data analytics are being collected on the audience I am trying to reach out to. The outreach to major insurance and healthcare companies is important when selling the cybersecurity products that are being developed.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I found out about the position through UMBCWorks and received a call for an interview and my skills aligned with what the CEO was looking for, so I got hired.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I enjoy working directly for the CEO because, one day, I hope to be in a management position myself. It is very interesting and informational to help him out with some of his responsibilities, as well as be the voice of the product that his team is developing by being the one to sell it and reach out to the major companies.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I believe I have made an impact through my work because I work for a cybersecurity company and the private data of many consumers of major companies are at risk of being exposed now more than ever. Ardent Privacy works tirelessly to make sure that companies are following all the privacy compliance laws in place, so their businesses are not affected negatively. As well as, making sure that the unknowing consumers' information is protected. And in this age, where data breaches are such a common thing and are costing people millions of dollars as well as the invasion of their privacy, working for a cybersecurity company that is trying to prevent that is, in my opinion, making a really big impact.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Keep looking and keep applying! Don't give up if you don't hear back from one place or get rejected from another because these are all stepping stones to finding the job that is perfect for you. You can only grow from there.

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week? Make sure to fill out this form and stay tuned.
Intern of the Week: Veronica Schilling for Biology

<Tagline>Check out Veronica's internship with JHU APL!</Tagline>

This project aims to discover patterns on the canine genome, associations between gene sequences/structures and phenotypes, and quantifiable phenotypes in order to develop a breeding program that is designed to select for better explosive detection dogs. Moreover, this past summer I worked with another researcher at APL who is a licensed veterinarian. Her project focused on how the COVID-19 Pandemic affects LEA and TSA canines, and so we worked to establish a field-able, gross decontamination protocol for canines potentially exposed to SARS-CoV-2 in the field.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I obtained this internship through a visit to the Career Fair in the spring of my Sophomore year. There, I handed my resume in to one of APL’s representatives after getting to know him and a bit about APL. He described how they mostly offered work on engineering projects, but it was possible that they might have biology work. Later that spring I got a call from Dr. Bradburne, visited APL for a tour and interview, and began interning that summer.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

While this internship has been challenging, the work is incredibly rewarding and has shaped my new view of biological research and the different avenues of veterinary medicine. The people at APL are extremely supportive and are confident in their interns. There have been many occasions where I was placed on different projects simply because my PI was confident that I would be helpful and do a good job. The possibilities of work seem to be endless here, and the researchers are eager to expand the network of their interns!

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

This past summer when I worked on the project focusing on SARS-CoV-2 and a decontamination protocol for canines, I did a lot of quirky lab work. We had to test the removal of a pseudo-contaminant on dog toys, which required a lot of time and creativity. Since I have grown used to managing a demanding and complex daily schedule, I have become a student that always looks for ways to be more efficient. I did this when working in the lab with a senior researcher, humbly offering suggestions on how we could alter our procedure to be more time effective, and this entirely transformed the flow of our work. What once took us a week would take us less than two days. We were able to do more repeats, which made the results more robust and conclusive.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Try everything, look everywhere, because the results may surprise you. I never expected to work at APL, let alone do research that related to my plans to become a veterinarian. However, I took the chance and put my name out there anyway, and it was perhaps one of the most rewarding and gratifying decisions I have ever made.

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week? Make sure to fill out this form and stay tuned.
Intern of the Week: Rehman Liaqat for Political Science

<Tagline>Check out Rehman's internship with MD Public Defender!</Tagline>

Name:Rehman Liaqat

Internship, Co-op or Research Site:Maryland Office of the Public Defender

Position Title:Legal Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s):Political Science and Global Studies

Current Class Level:Sophomore

Work Term:Summer 2020

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

Interning at the Maryland Office of the Public Defender included insight into many fields of legal proceedings that I had never witnessed. My daily routine consists of shadowing licensed Public Defenders in their daily dockets (3 dockets a day 10-20 cases per docket), filing, case-briefing, and also researching. One of the main projects I helped lead was the Maryland Police Project which focused on how police misconduct is treated in different parts of Maryland along with enforcing legislation which demands for accountability for any form of misconduct such as evidence tampering and police brutality. I was a fish swimming in a whole new body of water yet I never felt so connected and at home because of how much I valued our day-to-day work serving the public.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

As COVID-19 erupted, it became almost impossible to obtain any legal internships as Maryland courts remained closed till mid-summer. However, I began emailing and calling and keeping in touch with many of my supervisors from the beginning of spring semester and was given the chance to work on virtual projects till courts reopened and as my own supervisor said it herself when she had to make the difficult decision to only appoint one intern for the summer, "your persistence got you where you are today".

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

Along with the conversations and the people I've met and have had the chance to make a difference in their lives, I think the most valuable part about my ability to intern this summer was the sense of ambition that I began to endure, fueled by the passion I experienced when helping individuals through some of their darkest times. It is truly a moment of enlightenment that never seems to go away.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Whenever I get asked this question, I also think about the boy in the "Starfish Story" (an incredible read btw)! Shadowing the Public Defenders, we saw over 20 clients a day whether it was through traffic violations or assault cases or juvenile court. We cannot magically make the world a better place or get rid of all wrongs, instead, we do as much good as we can and make a difference in the lives of as many starfish as we can. I believe that public defenders help individuals get through some of the darkest times of their lives and I truly felt like I made a difference being a part of the team!

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

I would recommend exposing yourself to such experiences early. I changed my major my first year at UMBC, mostly through the people I've met and the experiences I've had, but it was because of my exposure to the field that I truly believed I could make a difference. It helped me find my sense of resilience and ambition and Grit, True Grit in the things I feel passionate for.

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week?Make sure to fill out this form and stay tuned.
