General Description:

In this role, you will work closely with the Marketing Manager to implement and promote the dining program here at UMBC. This involves research to understand the needs of the target market, planning & brainstorming, promotions & advertising through various platforms, and implementation. This is not your average internship; you will be spearheading various projects and will be able to request assignments to expand your knowledge base. This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in the field of marketing.

 

The Requirements:

• Excellent communication skills, written and verbal

• Customer service experience/knowledge

• Knowledge of social media platforms

• Good to better interpersonal skills

• General interest and knowledge

• Knowledge of graphic design tools is a plus

• Prior marketing related experience is a plus

 

Job Responsibilities (May include any or all):

• Assist with planning, organizing and hosting events

• Assist with Dine on Campus

• Assist in social media calendar development and promotions

• Act as a brand representative

• Conduct marketing audits

• Conduct general administrative tasks

• Complete Marketing Boot Camp

• Surveying students to collect marketing research

• Create marketing materials to numerous specifications

• Manage signage in multiple locations

• Assist with the creation of concepts, campaigns, and imagery to effectively communicate messages to the target market

• Manage website and social networking profile content

• Attend meetings or other events as required

Dear UMBC Community,

We are excited to announce the Career Center's transition to Handshake, which has become the number one place employers recruit college students and recent graduates. More than 1,400 colleges and universities now partner with Handshake, making it the top platform among career centers across the nation.

This platform is now live and will replace the university's current system, UMBCworks.

There are a number of reasons we are making this change. Below are just a few:

Colleges, divisions, departments, and units across campus are highly encouraged to start posting open student positions for both undergraduate and graduate students as soon as possible. New student enrollment is in full swing and our Retrievers are now logging into Handshake seeking jobs for the upcoming academic year. Please also be sure to update your webpages to reflect this change.

Students have started completing their profiles on Handshake and making appointments with our career specialists. Existing users of UMBCworks are encouraged to move any current documents--including resumes and cover letters--to Handshake.

The Shriver Center and Career Center are also working together to transition enrollment and evaluation processes for applied learning experiences, including internships, co-ops, research, and service-learning, for the start of the fall semester.

"My name is Joshua Walters and I am a senior math major here at UMBC. As a career peer, I am one of the first points of contact with many of the students who come to the Career Center for advising. One of my main responsibilities is to advise students on their resumes and cover letters during our daily drop-in hours: I assist students with formatting, conveying information effectively, and with understanding the specifics of correct resume and cover letter writing. I also work with many of the student organizations on campus - sending out reminders for upcoming events, and even sometimes hosting workshops where I speak with students about a variety of career-success topics. These topics can be anything from deciding on a major, networking, finding a full time job, and everything in-between. Being a career peer has been an incredibly rewarding experience - I have learned so much about career development through both my training and working so closely with UMBC students. I have had the opportunity to hone many skills such as resume writing, presenting, and teamwork/leadership skills that will be invaluable to both my job search, and finding success in my future career. Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.


"I work on-site for iHire at the Frederick office. The development team at iHire works in a 2 week sprint and we get assigned work every Monday, which is the start of the sprint.


The assigned work includes User Stories, which are new features to be added to the website. After completion, we communicate with the Business Owner of the User Story so it can undergo testing.


When all the work for a sprint is completed before the sprint is over, we begin working on tickets in the ticket queue. A ticket is usually a bug on the website which needs fixing but could simply be an inquiry into why something is not working as expected."



Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?


I found the iHire internship on LinkedIn and decided to apply. I heard back from the company within a week or two. I had 2 interviews. The first was a 40 minute behavioral interview with 2 panelists. And the second was a one hour skills assessment/technical interview.


What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization? 


What I enjoy the most about the position is that the work is very challenging. No two tasks are the same. There's always something new to learn and/or create.


The people at iHire are amazing to work with. Everyone is extremely helpful and kind which makes the overall internship experience an amazing one.



How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?


I worked on a User Story which redesigned a specific page of the website, so I would like to believe I have helped make the User's Experience while browsing the iHire website more pleasant.


I've also worked on business side logic code which has helped other associates make more informed business decisions.



What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience? 


Be sure to thank your interviewers for their time at the end of the interview. Call them by their names and highlight your willingness to learn. Dress for success and be at the interview site at least 5 minutes early.


Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.


Don't let rejection get to you. All you need is one company to take a chance on you and you'll forget the rest, so don't give up.
