Navigating Virtual Career Fairs

<Tagline>Tips to Prepare for a Virtual Fair Setting</Tagline>

Virtual career fairs are a convenient and
effective way to connect with potential employers from anywhere. With the GCC
Virtual Career Expo coming up on March 5, now is the perfect time to
prepare so you can make a strong impression on employers and maximize your job
    and internship opportunities.

Here’s how to navigate a virtual career fair
    successfully:

1. Register and
    Research Companies Beforehand

Before the event, register
    here and explore the
list of participating employers. Review their websites, job postings, and
company culture to identify those that align with your career goals. Make a
short list of employers you hope to visit at the virtual career fair. This
should be done in order of priority to ensure you don’t miss out on your top
    choices.

2. Optimize Your
    Resume and LinkedIn Profile

Update
your resume with relevant experience and skills, and have a PDF version ready
to upload when you register. Also make sure that your LinkedIn profile is
optimized and polished—employers may check prior to the fair to see who they’d
like to speak to. If you need help with either of these materials, you can schedule
    a 1:1 appointment with a Career Advisor.

3. Prepare Your
    Elevator Pitch

Have a 30-second commercial
ready that highlights your background, skills, and career interests. Tailor it
for different employers and practice delivering it confidently. If you want to
practice in a more simulated environment, log into Big Interview and
practice your pitch in response to the “Tell Me About Yourself” prompt.

4. Dress
Professionally and Set Up Your Space

Even though it’s a virtual fair, dressing in
business casual attire helps make a positive impression should you be invited
to speak 1:1 with employers, and can even help you get into a more professional
mindset. Find a quiet, well-lit space with a neutral background to minimize
    distractions.

5. Engage Actively
    and Ask Thoughtful Questions

Should you be invited to chat with an
employer, be professional and engaged. Have questions ready beforehand and ask
about the company culture, job opportunities, and the hiring process. Express
interest in specific roles rather than just saying you’re looking for a job.
You can review job postings within the fair that you can reference in these
    conversations.

6. Follow Up with
    Employers

After the fair, send thank-you emails or
LinkedIn messages to the employers you connected with 1:1. Reiterate your
interest in their company and remind them of your conversation by mentioning
something specific and memorable that you discussed. Don’t forget to include
the specific job posting you’re interested in as well.

Ready
    to Register?

The GCC Virtual Career Expo is an
excellent opportunity to connect with top employers looking to hire graduate
students, postdocs, and alumni from the STEM, Humanities, and Social Sciences
    fields. Don’t forget to register
    today and start
preparing for a successful job or internship search!

How to Land a Tech Internship

<Tagline>Follow these steps to land your next opportunity.</Tagline>

Internships in the tech industry are highly competitive, but with the right search strategy, you can secure an opportunity that will set you up for future success. Whether you're interested in software development, cybersecurity, data science, IT, or others, here are some key steps to help you land a tech internship.

1. Build a Strong Resume and Portfolio

Tech employers seek candidates with relevant skills and experience. Highlight coursework, personal projects, hackathons, or freelance work that demonstrate your technical abilities. If you’re in software development, create a GitHub profile showcasing your code, add the link to the top with your contact information, and reference aspects of your GitHub throughout your resume. For UI/UX roles, build a portfolio website with your designs and write a narrative about how you completed projects from start to finish.

2. Gain Hands-On Experience

Practical experience is crucial to land a tech internship. If you have yet to land something formalized, consider working on open-source projects, participating in coding competitions, or taking on freelance work. Many companies also offer virtual internships and apprenticeships to help students build experience before applying for formal internships. You can also consider checking out sites like Parker Dewey and Forage.

3. Network with Industry Professionals

Networking plays a huge role in landing tech internships, as you’re 10x more likely to get a job from a referral vs. a cold application. Attend career fairs, tech meetups, and industry conferences to connect with recruiters and professionals in your field. Engage with alumni on Retrievers Connect and LinkedIn, and join student chapters of professional organizations like the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). You can also find professional associations that are relevant to your interests through our Majors Resources page.

4. Apply Early and Strategically

Many tech companies recruit interns months in advance, so it’s wise to start your search earlier than you may think. For example, you can start searching for a summer internship in the fall semester. To help with this process, first go to Handshake to and review its internship postings. Then, you can also use platforms like Steppingblocks, LinkedIn, and company career pages to find openings. Tailor your applications by incorporating keywords and industry jargon to your materials, emphasizing relevant skills and quantifying achievements.

5. Prepare for Both Technical and Traditional Interviews

Most tech internships require technical assessments or coding interviews. Practice with platforms like LeetCode, HackerRank, or CodeSignal, which have free options for students and junior developers. Review common data structures, algorithms, and problem-solving techniques to improve your chances of success. For more traditional interviews you want to make sure you’re prepared to answer questions about yourself, your work, and the role. Practice your responses using Big Interview, or schedule an Interview Prep or Practice Interview appointment with the Career Center.

Time to Take the Next Step

As previously mentioned, one of the best ways to find a tech internship is by attending networking and hiring events. The Maryland Technology Internship Program 2025 Hiring Event is an excellent opportunity to connect with Maryland-based tech employers. There are also opportunities to meet with UMBC alumni in Data Science and Health Information Technology, as well as our Technology and Engineering Industry Fair as part of Career Month in April. Register now for these events to meet with professionals in tech and increase your chances of securing an internship. You got this!

When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I learned about this role in January 2024 through LinkedIn and applied that same month. The hiring process consisted of two interview stages. First, I had one interview with the hiring manager, where we discussed my background, technical skills, and how they aligned with the role. The final stage was a panel interview with multiple team members, where I had the opportunity to showcase my problem-solving abilities and understanding of the industry. The entire process took about a month from application to the final decision.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?

UMBC Career Center, Career Fairs, Networking events (UMBC Connects, Info Sessions, Arts With a Purpose, etc.), Alumni Networking, Handshake, LinkedIn or other social media

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?

I had the incredible opportunity to intern at Biogen, where I learned so much about the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry.
Exploring Careers in STEM

<Tagline>Here are Five Ways to Get Started</Tagline>

A career in STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics) offers endless possibilities, from developing
innovative technology to answering the world’s greatest questions. Whether you're
just starting your journey or looking for ways to advance toward your career,
here are five key ways to prepare yourself for working in STEM:

1.
    Research Career Paths

STEM careers span a wide range of
industries, including healthcare, artificial intelligence, environmental
science, and data analytics. Take the time to explore different roles, required
skills, and potential career trajectories and see what excites you most. Use
resources like Steppingblocks and the Occupational Outlook Handbook that provide valuable insights into job
    outlooks and salary expectations.

2.
    Gain Hands-On Experience

Internships,
research projects, and co-op programs are excellent ways to gain real-world
experience. Many companies offer STEM-focused internships that help students
develop technical skills to build out a more competitive resume. Look for
    opportunities through Handshake by using
the Jobs tab on the homepage, as well as on our Majors Resources pages.

3. Connect with Industry Professionals

Networking is crucial in any field, even
in STEM. Follow the Career Center’s myUMBC page to get notified of upcoming events.
Keep an eye on Handshake events as well. When you see something that seems
relevant to you, attend these events to meet professionals and learn about job
opportunities. You can also connect with UMBC alum through Retrievers Connect
    as well.

4.
    Develop Technical and Soft Skills

While technical
skills like programming, data analysis, and engineering are important,
employers also value soft skills. In fact, according to NACE, the top
attributes employers seek are problem-solving skills, team work, and
communication skills. Develop soft skills by taking online courses, joining
student organizations, or working on personal projects to enhance these skill
    sets.

5.
    Stay Updated on Industry Trends

STEM fields
evolve rapidly, so staying informed is key. Follow industry news, read research
    publications, and join professional
associations related to your field of interest. Keeping up with trends in
areas like artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and cybersecurity can help
you stay competitive in the job market.

Take
    the Next Step

A career in
STEM is full of opportunities, but preparation is key. Start building your
network and explore your career paths today by attending the BEYA STEM DTX Career Fair and Conference. This event
is an excellent way to connect with recruiters, learn about job openings and
internship opportunities, and gain valuable industry insights. Don’t miss out
on this opportunity to take your STEM career to the next level. Registration to
travel with UMBC closes end-of-day on February 11th, but you can
    also register on the BEYA
website should you miss the deadline.

Good luck!

Intern of the Week: Sairam Bokka

<Tagline>Check out Sairam's internship!</Tagline>

Name: Sairam Bokka

Pronouns: He/Him

Semester of Internship: Summer 2024

Major: Cybersecurity

Current Class Level: Master's Student

This semester I completed a(n)... Internship

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site (Company/Organization Name): Tenable Network Security

Location of the Organization (City, State): Columbia, Maryland

Title of position: Software Engineering Intern

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:
My focus during my time at Tenable was to develop a bot that can handle Technical Support and Customer queries about flagged CVEs and Advisory information. Based on the status of a package, the bot would reply to the Tech Support team with relevant information. As part of this project, I had to set up a Docker environment and start writing Python scripts with unit tests for each function I developed. At the end of my internship, I used Jenkins to automatically build the bot from source and deployed a bash script to automatically pull a new image after the build process was completed.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
I was able to obtain this position through the BEYA Conference in February 2024. I met with the Talent Acquisition Manager at one of the Tenable booths and explained my qualifications and projects, highlighting the technologies I had used. She identified a position that was a great fit for my skills. I followed up with her on LinkedIn later and sent my resume. She then set up interviews with a Senior Software Developer and the Hiring Manager of the team I was going to join.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?
Career fairs, networking events (UMBC Connects, Info Sessions, Arts With a Purpose, etc.), LinkedIn, and other social media platforms.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
I enjoyed learning new things every day with the help of my mentor. He was supportive throughout my journey as an intern at Tenable. The HR team made the experience informative and fun through multiple networking events, listen-and-learns, and fun activities after office hours.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
My work significantly improved response times for common queries from customers and tech support engineers. The bot I developed was able to provide an instant response on Slack automatically when asked about a specific CVE. This eliminated the manual process in place, which required engineers to manually go through repositories to find a fix version for the CVE in question.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
Start early, apply for positions that match your profile, and attend as many networking events as possible. The formula for success in today’s job market is Applications + Networking + Follow-ups. For help crafting your resume, cover letters, and general interview tips, make use of Career Center resources. They are professionals and your best allies during your job search.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.
Continuous learning was an integral part of my work at Tenable. I was learning something new every day as part of my work. The hybrid work environment allowed me to meet my team in person two days a week, which helped me understand the project structure better and provide value in every sprint. The Career Center helped me craft the perfect resume for my internship, prepare for interviews, write cover letters, and improve my networking skills.
