Intern of the Week: Clare Dowley for Mechanical Engineering

<Tagline>Learn about Clare's experience at Whiting-Turner!</Tagline>

Name: Clare Dowley

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Whiting-Turner Contracting Company

Major(s)/Minor(s): Mechanical Engineering

Expected Graduation Year: May 2016

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, research, or service-learning opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

Despite being extremely busy working over the summer, I had an amazing intern experience. Unrelated to the actual work, everyone I worked with is very nice and friendly. That makes a huge difference when coming into a new workplace. They treated me like a fellow employee instead of an intern to give all the busy work. While I did have some filing and meaningless tasks to do, I was actually given a significant amount of real work. I handled invoices daily, processing things to be paid, as well as work on the Project Completion Report, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Materials, and even some work inside the Performing Arts and Humanities Building. I even got an inside look at the other WT projects on UMBC's campus, such as the new gateway entrance and Lot 29, the new parking lot by Walker field. I am very happy with my internship and the experiences I had this summer.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I found this internship on UMBCWorks. I applied online over the winter break and got a call from the woman who was to become my Project Manager. She called to set up an interview for when I was back on campus for the spring semester. I came to the trailers for the interview, we talked for a bit, and then she gave me a tour of Phase 2 of the Performing Arts and Humanities Building, which was then not yet open to the public. A couple weeks later she called again to offer me a position for the summer. The resources I used to get this internship was the resume check at the Shriver Center and the database of UMBCWorks.

Which of the following resources did you use to find your current experience?

UMBCworks

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

I have enjoyed seeing the changes to the campus where I go to school. Having an internship with WT allowed me to have inside looks at the Performing Arts and Humanities Building as well as the new Gateway entrance project and Lot 29, the parking lot next to Walker Apartments. It has been interesting to see the changes as they happen and have the insider information.

What have you gained from your experience that you could not have gained from another opportunity?

I have gained knowledge of the construction industry. I never knew about the engineering and design side, only the labor. There are some aspects of the projects that require such detail and I did not know such things even had to be considered when designing a building. Walking around the projects with the WT employees caused me to see them from a whole new view that I would never have had walking around a building with anyone else.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

I would tell others to apply to everything, especially if you're not certain what you want to do after graduation. While I still do not know for sure, I am much closer to that decision after this internship than I was before. I believe the key to that decision will be experience.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / the internship placement process.

What I liked most about my internship was the level of success with creating positive change around my campus paired with the extreme friendliness of everyone I worked with.

Like this story on Facebook or FAV/RT on Twitter!

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week?

Professional Recommendations

Many opportunities, like internships, graduate and professional school will require professional recommendations from your professors as part of the application process. It can be challenging to feel comfortable asking for recommendations but if you have a good relationship with the professor then you are more likely to feel more comfortable asking for a reference.

Here are some suggestions on how to get to know your professor:

Ask questions and express interest in the course

Attend office hours

Ask for advice and use it!

Follow up!

Don’t wait for a later time

Asking questions and expressing interest is an effective way to build a relationship with your professor. If you are afraid of asking questions, you can ask questions you already know the answer to. This will help your confidence and can often lead to a good conversation that you can add equal input to. You also will still probably learn something new.

Attending office hours can give you one-on-one time with the professor. Bring questions with you, if you can’t think of course content questions, you can always ask for career advice.

During the professor’s office hours is a great time to ask for studying advice or extra tips on writing the paper. Be honest about any struggles you are having (if any) in the course. The professor will likely be willing to give advice. If you do get advice, put it into action and let the professor know if it was successful.

Follow up with your professors. Thank them at the end of the semester and let them know how you are doing and visit occasionally.

Do not wait until the end of the semester to begin a relationship. Do not try to “prove” yourself before building the relationship. He or she will not be able to speak to your work ethic, intelligence and success if they did not witness it.

It is okay to tell your professor early on that you will want a recommendation. This may prompt the professor to pay attention to your actions and achievements.

When you do ask for a recommendation, be sure to give at least four weeks’ notice. Provide a resume and a personal statement if applicable. Make sure to send reminders. When the recommendation has been submitted, be sure to thank your recommender.

Intern of the Week: Benard Onyango for Information Systems

<Tagline>Learn about Benard's experience at PGE!</Tagline>

Name: Benard Onyango

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Pennsylvania General Energy | Title of Your Position: Software Developer

Major(s)/Minor(s): Information Systems

Expected Graduation Year: Master Student, May 2015

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, research, or service-learning opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

I interned at Pennsylvania general Energy as Software Developer. It is such a nice place to work. I particularly enjoyed the friendliness of my fellow programmers. They were very helping in answering any questions that I needed answered. My daily routine began with programming in ASP.NET(C#) using MVC framework. My first assignment was to create of an app for the PGE legal department. In addition, I was also I asked to help with the completion of a web based application which was about 80 % done. Despite some challenges, I really enjoyed my internship. I gained a wealth of knowledge from it.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

A friend of mine told me that there was a position open for software developer intern. I immediately went online to learn something about the company.

While I was waiting to hear from them, I spent some time reading about some of the requirements(technologies) for the job that were not very familiar to me. This was very helpful on the day of the interview.

Something I would like to mention is that they were asking for 1.5 years of experience to be hired. Even though I did not have that much experience, I did not shy away from applying.

Which of the following resources did you use to find your current experience?

Network

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

The Employees at PGE were very friendly especially the programming team and my supervisor. They made sure I did the work. However, they were very kind in answering any questions that I may have had.

What have you gained from your experience that you could not have gained from another opportunity?

By working on real, hands-on project, I was able to gain in the following technologies.

    -	ASP.NET MVC 4 and 5 Framework
    -	Visual Studio 2012 IDE, Entity Framework 5 with Migrations
    -	HTML5, CSS, JavaScript (JQuery and Ajax), GIT Repository

Secondly, I build good professional networks that may become relevant especially in my job hunt after graduation.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

My advice would be to make sure you distribute copies of your resume to people. You never know when an opportunity may become available.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / the internship placement process.

This internship brought the best out me! It taught me that all I needed was an opportunity and a challenge, to fully comprehend my capabilities.

Like this story on Facebook or FAV/RT on Twitter!

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week?
