Tailoring Your Resume

<Tagline>Susanna Campbell, Career Peer Liaison to the CNMS</Tagline>

You should tailor your resume for each position you are applying for. I recommend having multiple versions of your resume. You can have a version of your resume for part-time jobs, on-campus jobs, internships, full time jobs, graduate school, professional school, etc.

You will want to highlight different information for each type of resume. It is often helpful to have a master resume. This resume would have all of your experience and activities. You can create a tailored resume by picking and choosing information that is the most relevant to the job.

In order to tailor your resume, be aware of the skills and responsibilities the position you are applying for may need. Many times you can find a list of preferred or required qualities on the employment advertisement, on the company website, or by asking a professional in the field.

Once you know what skills are important to emphasize, look through your master resume and pick the corresponding activities.

When organizing your tailored resume, the most relevant material should be listed towards the top of your document. As a student, your education will usually be listed first.

If you are applying to an internship, coursework, school projects, past internships and job experiences will likely be the relevant information that you should emphasize.

For many on-campus jobs, students who are involved and can serve as an ambassador for the department at UMBC, get hired first.

For office jobs, communication and teamwork skills as well as a being self-motivated are skills that are in demand.

Each type of graduate and professional school will look for different qualities. However, some common skills to highlight are your talents as a student or your ability to multitask and handle a large workload.

Keep in mind that some activities can highlight many different transferrable skill sets. For example, participation in a student organization can show skills such as leadership, teamwork, or involvement. Customize your headings and description statements in order to emphasize the important information.

Read the application carefully in order to find hints about what qualities the recruiter is looking for. Use specific buzzwords. If the application says, “looking for strong intercommunication skills,” use the key word intercommunication in your resume (if this is a strength of yours) and be detailed about your ability. If you are not proficient in a specific requested skill, focus on the other skills you do have.

Show part of your personality on your resume. Your resume is more than just a list of your qualifications. It is an advertisement about yourself and why you would make a good candidate for the position.

Finally, when posting your resumes to UMBCworks, you may save as many versions of your resume there as you like. And only the first one you post has to be approved by the Career Center.

Career Peers, like myself, critique resumes in the Career Center during drop-in from 2-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Be sure to drop in to have your resume reviewed.

Intern of the Week: Hiba Zia for Graphic Design

<Tagline>Learn about Hiba's experience at the Federal Reserve Board!</Tagline>

Name: Hiba Zia

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Federal Reserve Board | Title of Your Position: Graphic Design Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s): Graphic Design

Expected Graduation Year: May 2015

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, research, or service-learning opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

Being an intern for the Office of Inspector General at the Federal Reserve Board for the summer was an outstanding experience and I was extremely heavy hearted that I was only there for the summer. Luckily, I landed an opportunity to be an intern for the year at the Board but for a different division. I am now interning at the Office of Chief Data Officer. What I love most about my internship are the people I encounter everyday. They have insightful advice and are always willing to help. Some of the assignments I complete include website implementation, branding and marketing, and also developing templates for reports and documents.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I obtained my internship by applying to every opportunity that was relative to my major.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

I love that I work on varieties of projects. I enjoy coming into work not knowing what assignments I will work on. I also love the office side of my internship as opposed to working in a studio. Even though I take three trains and a shuttle to get to my building, I enjoy my commute I wouldn't trade it for anything.

What have you gained from your experience that you could not have gained from another opportunity?

I have gained the experience of working as a graphic designer in the office environment. Other internships I have had, I worked from home or a studio.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

I advise that you apply early and don't wait til last minute. The federal Reserve board is always looking for interns!

Like this story on Facebook or FAV/RT on Twitter!

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week?

Making a Good First Impression

The first impression is a lasting one. First impressions are important and can be a major factor in an employer’s decision to give you the job or internship. It can even affect relationships with your professors, co-workers, and supervisors.

Currently, I am applying to graduate school for the fall semester. Right now I am at the interviewing stage. The first impression is key for me right now. So This is what I have learned.

In order to make a good first impression you should connect with the person. You can make that connection by being yourself, having good eye-contact, and by showing interest.

As people, we have a remarkable ability to tell if somebody is being honest and genuine. Often, when I exaggerate my experience or I am too shy to admit my expertise, I find that I am unable to connect with the person I am speaking too. You will connect the most with the person by being candid about your experiences. If you are honest about areas of improvement, the employer or professor may take a personal investment in helping you.

Additionally, you can connect with somebody with good eye-contact. Eye-contact shows confidence and interest. Too much eye-contact can be intimidating; but, the right amount of eye contact will show that you are engaged in the conversation and also that you are confident in your abilities.

My last suggestion is to show genuine interest in the person you are meeting and the opportunity in front of you. You can ask the person about themselves and how they got to the position they are in today. If you are being offered an opportunity, ask questions to show that you are invested.

You do not have to impress an employer, internship coordinator, professor or a graduate school administrator by exaggerating your accomplishments or claiming to have qualities that you do not. Connect with your interviewer by being genuine and by being interested in the opportunity in front of you.

    Since
2011, Applied Computer Security Associates, sponsor of the ACSAC and

    Thanks
to a $250,000 4-year contribution by Hewlett-Packard company in early
2014, ACSA expanded our program to award 11 scholarships for the 2014-15
     academic year. The Committee
on the Status of Women in Computing Research (CRA-W), an arm of the
Computing Research Alliance, led selection of scholarship winners.
Information about the 11 SWSIS Scholars (scholarship winners) is
    available at http://www.swsis.org.

ACSA, CRA-W, and HP are pleased to announce that applications for 2015-16 scholarships are open Dec 15 2014 – Feb 25 2015.

To apply, an applicant must provide:
* An essay describing her interest and background in the information security field.
* A current transcript.
* A resume or CV.
* At least two letters of reference (typically from faculty members).
* Her university name and class status.

    The
scholarship is renewable for a second year subject to availability of
funds, given proof of satisfactory academic progress. Preference is for
    US citizens or permanent residents;
funds are available for use at any US campus of a US university.
