Join the Career Center staff on October 1st for a trip to The Idealist Grad School Fair hosted by American University and taking place at the Washington Convention Center!

Can you believe this Thursday is the first day of October already? That means it’s another month into the semester, and another month closer to application deadlines. Believe me…they creep up before you know it. Finding the right school and program for graduate school can be overwhelming and stressful, but the good news is the Career Center has plenty of options to help you through the decision process.

On October 1st from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, the Career Center staff will be providing transportation for the Idealist Grad School Fair. They will leave from UMBC by 3:30, so if you cannot leave with the UMBC students feel free to get there by different transportation. There will be 249 different programs from schools including Harvard, Yale, Duke, Columbia, and NYU will be there to help you get more information. If you go to this link http://www.idealist.org/explore/JxbbgDCPnw8d/exhibitors you can look at all of the different programs and requirements for them. I recommend doing a little research on the ones you’re interested in before you attend so you have a better idea of what questions to ask once you’re there. If you’re sure you can go, register ASAP! You can register for the Fair here at http://www.eventbrite.com/e/washington-dc-idealist-grad-fair-tickets-17309432980 and rsvp for the bus is through UMBCworks.

If you can’t make this trip or if you feel way too unprepared to start looking at programs, it’s no problem! The Career Center has plenty of opportunities to help you figure out what you want to study. If you don’t have a clue where to start in picking a program, let alone deciding what to do with your life, I highly suggest you take the self-assessment tests on our website at http://careers.umbc.edu/students/discover/self/.   The FOCUS2 and the WooFound Compass assessments not only have really cool names, they also help you identify your interests, talents, and values and provide a customized report of jobs and career fields that match your personality! Once you complete them you can set up an appointment with a Career Specialist to talk about your results.

 Once you have a better idea of what you want to do, it makes it easier to start researching schools that have the program you’re interested in. The Career Center’s website contains important questions to consider when picking a program as well as links to additional webpages that provide information on different programs. On Wednesday, October 21st at 4:30 pm there is a Grad School 101 Conference where you can have dinner and connect with other students who are also trying to plan their future. The conference will have presentations that cover navigating the application process, writing a strong personal statement that grabs attention, and advice from graduate students and alumni to help with the entire process! Briefly describe your internship, co-op,  or research opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

This is my first IT job. I am lucky and proud to say that it got me the best learning experiences, incredible supporting colleagues, and coolest Mentor/Manager/Boss. During my last year at UMBC, I opted to do research/Master's thesis in the field of Data mining and collaborated my IT job with my academics. My Professor and Manager came together to decide the research topic which can be utilized in a product of Laureate Education. During my year at this internship, I wore multiple hats. I have worked as a salesforce administrator, project coordinator and programmer analyst. It is a great roller coaster ride to learn and explore new technologies. 

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I participated in every career fair that UMBC organized. At each fair, I walked around and did not skipping any encounter. I provided my resume and talked with employers face to face, and I was very specific and clear on what I am doing in my academics and what my interests are. It was a good practice for networking, and it was great to meet new employers all under one roof.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

They are very friendly, and the working environment is very professional. They provide a flexibility to work from home as well. All these advantages sum up to a positive outcome; it encourages you to work more effectively and be more productive. 

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I have used my knowledge of the salesforce to create a ticketing system to handle real-time customer facing issues. After I implemented my system, the issue storing process has become more efficient and effective. It saved a lot of time and reduced the waiting time for customers to get their problems resolved. Research work which I have done for my Master's thesis is actually a solution to a real-time problem statement/business requirement at Laureate Education. 

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Never give up! Attend all career fairs and networking events, and be crystal clear on what path you want to move forward on in your career. Self-teaching is something which is required at each phase of life, be it in professional life or in academics.

Student Registration for the 2016  year of the Workforce Recruitment Program is now open!

Students with disabilities may visit the website www.wrp.gov and take their first step toward an opportunity for Federal Employment. To register, students should visit www.wrp.gov and click on the purple student registration button.

The Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP) is a referral and recruitment program that identifies students with disabilities who are interested in employment with the federal government. The WRP is one of the main paths to:

·         Find an internship or permanent position at federal agencies

·         Explore careers in the federal service

·         Gain interviewing experience

 A recruiter will be assigned to UMBC to conduct phone interviews with interested candidates. Candidates that are accepted into the program will have the opportunity to be interviewed for federal and private sector positions. Participation is open to any students with disabilities at all levels and majors, and degree programs. Veterans with disabilities are especially urged to apply.

 To qualify, an eligible candidate:

·         Must have an intellectual disability, severe physical disability, or psychiatric disability which makes the candidate eligible to use the Schedule A hiring authority

·         Must be a United States Citizen

·         Must be a current, full-time, degree-seeking, post-secondary student, unless you are taking a reduced course load due to a disability OR are in the final semester. Alumni who graduated in May 2014 or later are also eligible.

 
Applying for the WRP is a two part process. The link above will take you to the first part of the process where you will register for the program by filling out your basic contact information, acknowledging that this is a program for students with disabilities and that you are eligible for hiring under the Schedule A Hiring Authority, and identifying the college or university that you are attending. 

Once your registration is approved you will be prompted via e-mail to log into the WRP site at www.wrp.gov and complete your application by answering all of the questions about your academic and career preparation and uploading your resume and transcripts. Students have until October 16 to complete their registration.

Are you participating in a Fall 2015 internship, co-op, or research experience? Get it recognized on your academic transcript by registering for the Career Center Intern/Co-op/Research Practicum (PRAC). Registering for PRAC provides an official record of your experience, letting future employers and graduate schools know about your hard work. 

WHAT IS PRAC?

PRAC is a zero-credit, pass/fail course that requires a few small assignments and attendance at two professional development workshops. It is designed to help you grow as a professional and support you throughout your experience. You can preview the assignments on page 2 of the syllabus. We also recommend viewing the PRAC orientation video.

HOW TO REGISTER:

Log in to UMBCworks and follow these easy steps. You will be asked to attach a letter or email from your employer verifying that you will be/are working there this fall. This can be a Word document, PDF, or screenshot. Please register online by Monday, September 28. Retroactive enrollments for past experiences are not permitted.

Note: We are also holding a PRAC enrollment drop-in day from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Monday, September 28 in the Career Center.  Simply stop in and a coordinator will assist you with your registration.

EARNING CREDIT FOR YOUR EXPERIENCE:

Although PRAC is zero-credit, you may be able to couple it with an academic internship or research course, allowing you to earn credits for your experience. On the registration form, you can indicate whether you're interested in this option. Some courses require PRAC enrollment. Check out your options for earning credit.
