Intern of the Week: Johnny Ruffa for Mechanical Engineering

<Tagline>Learn about Johnny's experience at NASA!</Tagline>

I worked with three other interns to provide a down-scaled model of the current Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) using 3-D printing technology. I also performed structural analysis of a composite instrument in order to optimize the amount of composite material layers used for construction. Over the course of the summer, I was responsible for evenly distributing the project work among the team of interns and creating a timeline and deadlines that pushed towards completion of the model. A lot of freedom was given to me by mentor in order to encourage innovation and creativity in the design of the constructed model. I recreated, remodeled, and designed new concepts using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software to create a functional and accurate representation of the current WFIRST Observatory design.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I was able to find the internship position located through NASA's website, which directed me to the One Stop Shopping Initiative (OSSI) NASA internship program. I consulted fellow mechanical engineering classmates and my older brother, an electrical engineer, to help review and improve my resume in preparation for the internship application. I also reached out to employed engineers from my church community to help prepare for the potential interview process.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

I have enjoyed learning from and interacting with some of the most brilliant people I've ever met. I've had the opportunity to engage in conversation with world class scientists, and hear from Nobel Prize winner John Mather. Everyone I've met at NASA has vast knowledge and experiences, and it would be foolish not to ask questions and learn from their experiences. The science and technology used at NASA is very intriguing and complex, and it's common to be overwhelmed and lost through all the information. However, I never felt afraid or judged by anyone for lack of knowledge and was encouraged to develop and grow from both my experiences and my failures in order to seek excellence. NASA has cultivated a true learning experience that's inspired me to further pursue and use my education to achieve new heights.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

The work I have done this summer is extremely beneficial to the project I was assigned to. The engineers of the project use CAD designs that act as blueprints for building the Observatory, and it's difficult to visualize how each instrument and component interacts with each other. The model I created was constructed as multiple subsections that allowed the different subsections to be pulled out and examined, and then reassembled into the overall model when finished. This allows the engineers to recognize the intricacies and fine details of many instruments while observing how each component functions in the overall product. The model also serves as a visual tool for the project managers and scientist to help encourage project funders and help communicate the overall mission of the project: to discover exoplanets and gain knowledge on dark energy. The work I have done is a big supporting role in the mission of the project that helps the engineers visualize their work as well as help scientists inspire future project funders to contribute to the mission.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Reach out to as many corporations and internship opportunities as possible. There are endless opportunities in the area, and each opportunity provides invaluable experience to help you figure out what career to pursue. Even if you end up disliking your experience, it's important you find out now instead of committing the first important years of your career to a job you don't enjoy.

Like this story on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter!

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week?
Connect with over 150 employers at the MCC Career Fair!

<Tagline>Come out to Loyola this Friday from 10 to 2:30</Tagline>

This Friday, Feb 19th, you will have another
awesome opportunity to meet tons of great employers! UMBC is co-sponsoring a
Maryland Career Consortium Fair, hosted at Loyola University at the Reitz Arena
from 10am to 2:30pm. Unfortunately the shuttle from UMBC to take you to the
fair is full, but you can find directions on how to get to the area here, and you can RSVP here.

This fair will have over 150 employers! I would check out
the list here. There is a wide variety of great employers to talk to, including the CIA,
Baltimore County Public Schools, Americorps, Space Telescope Science Institute,
Daniel Morgan Academy, and even the Baltimore Orioles Stadium! This fair will
be great for anyone looking to get an internship nearby, a summer job, or a
full-time job after college! Most of these organizations are right in the
Maryland, DC, and Virginia area. Even if you don’t plan on staying in Baltimore
after college, a lot of these companies and organizations have sites in various
    locations.

I highly recommend attending this fair to make some awesome
connections. In addition to employers, there will be a ton of students from the
Baltimore area to connect with! It can be really inspiring to discuss what your
interests, frustrations, experiences, and goals are regarding school, and life
in general. It can even give you some new ideas about what you can do with your
major or program, or they could even refer you to a place they’ve
worked/interned before! Connections are a wonderful thing. A career fair is meant for interacting, so
don’t feel reluctant to do so!

In case you missed my post on our Summer Career Fair last
week, I wanted to remind you of some resources in order to make the most out of
a career fair. Since there are so many employers, you’re really going to want
to look through the directory, which has listed the positions they’re offering
and what majors they’re looking for. This way you can get a better idea of
which employers you want to visit and stand out at.

You can look at the MCC Career
Fair page here, as well as our Career Center website on navigating career
fairs, for tips on how to have a successful time. But here are a few important
    reminders:

1. Make sure your resume looks strong before
you hand it out to employers. You can look at our resume writing page on the Career Center
website, or you can come get your resume reviewed beforehand! You can make an
appointment at the Career Center or you can come into our drop-in hours between
    2-4 Monday-Friday.

2. Dress professionally! If you need some
help, check out our helpful guide
    here.

3. Network with recruiters! Talk with them,
e-mail them after the fair, and consider connecting to them on LinkedIn. There
will be a lot of students at the fair, so you want to be sure you stand out.

Feel free to get in touch with the
    Career Center via careers@umbc.edu,
    410.455.2216, or stopping by Math/Psych 212.

Name:Alec Hanock

Internship, Co-op or Research Site:
    Under Armour

Position Title:
    Entertainment Marketing Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s):B.A.
Media & Communications Studies, Minors in Entrepreneurship and American
    Studies

Expected Graduation Year: May
    2016

Briefly describe
your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your
    day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

I work as a paid intern in the Entertainment department of Under
Armour at the corporate offices in Locust Point. I work a lot with the
celebrities and VIP clients who wear and support the brand to spread awareness
throughout the entertainment industry. I coordinate with their managers and
assistants about what sizes our clients wear, as well as put together orders
for them to be shipped out and then follow up with them via social media
postings. Our goal as the entertainment sector is to promote UA as a lifestyle
and not just a brand of workout clothes. We cater to major influencers in
the entertainment industry and not only does that drive revenue for us, but it
markets UA as a highly sought after athletic clothing company.

Describe the
process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

Over the summer, I talked with my internship advisor, Kacie
Lawrence, about the Under Armour Communications Internship posted on UMBCworks
and we worked on my resume and cover letter together. I was fortunate enough to
make it through the interview process and into the final few candidates.
Unfortunately, the UA Communications department decided to pass on me, but they
felt I would be a good fit in the company and recommended me to the
Entertainment department who still needed an intern. Thankfully they didn't
pass on me the second time around.

What have you
enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

It's a team aspect here at Under Armour and everyone has a role to
fill. Being the only intern has been a challenge that I have been excited to
take on. It's a fun place to work, and I enjoy being able to work on so many
different projects every day. Being a college hockey player, I feel that I live
the Under Armour lifestyle because there are so many former college athletes
who work here. You can feel the energy and passion for the brand as soon as you
step through the doors. It's a pretty cool thing to see all of the different
departments working together to make this the best athletic brand it can be.
Plus the discount and perks aren’t too bad either.

How do you
believe you have made an impact through your work?

I approach every day of work with the same focus and passion that
I approach a hockey game. I believe my attention to detail and overall work
ethic have set me apart from the other candidates who were applying for my
position. I feel grateful every day I come to the office, and I just do
everything I can to better myself as an employee to help push this company to
    success.

What advice would
you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

I would just tell them to never give up if you really want a
position. I applied for an Under Armour internship last year and didn't get
chosen, I applied for a Communications internship and didn't get chosen, but
that relentless passion and want to succeed landed me in this position and I
believe it's better than the previous ones I had applied for and I get to work
with some of the greatest people in this company. If you want something bad
enough and work hard enough, people will notice.
