Intern of the Week: Allison Feeney for Financial Econ & AMST

<Tagline>Learn about Allison's experience at Textron Systems!</Tagline>

I assisted their Program Manager by preparing a number of documents in support of Textron’s UAV program contracts with the U.S. and International governments, such as Objective Quality Evidence Academic, Flight, and Equipment reports for New Equipment Training Iterations, Exit Criteria Memos, and Closeout documentation for DCMA and Quality reviews to facilitate sales of $4 million. In addition, I initiated project set up of two UAV international programs, submitted revenue forecasts for New Equipment Training and Reset Technical Inspections, and prepared pricing and estimating reports. I also prepared and analyzed Field Service Customer Requests supporting Shadow’s Field Service Single Integrated Operational Plan. In addition, I learned how to use Oracle and ProPricer, two systems which are commonly used in businesses.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

In preparation for the Career Center’s Summer Job & Internship Fair, I met with a counselor at the Career Center who helped me improve the formatting and content of my resume. Then, while attending the Internship Fair at UMBC, I stopped by Textron's table. I gave them my resume and talked to one of their representatives, who scheduled me for an interview on-campus the next day. Before the interview, I applied for three positions with Textron. A few weeks after that interview, I had a phone interview with the woman who would end up being my supervisor with Textron. She asked me a few questions based off of my resume and explained her responsibilities with the company to give me an idea of what my internship would entail. A few days later, I was emailed my internship offer! Overall, it was a relatively easy process

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

My internship exposed me to government contracting and program management, both of which I had previously never considered for a career path. It was really interesting to learn about both. Plus the UAVs in the room next to my office were pretty cool too! The field of of program management interests me because it allows me to apply the concepts I have learned in my finance classes while also interacting with people.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

During my internship,I provided support to the programs that train soldiers with the equipment they use during combat. It was very easy to see how the work I did went towards ensuring the security of our country.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Be open to interning in other areas of work besides what you have in mind. There are so many different career paths within your field of study, many of which you have never even considered.

Like this story on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter!

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week?
You've got the skills, now learn how to pitch them!

<Tagline>Check out the Transferrable Skills workshop THIS Friday!</Tagline>

“It’s a competitive job market out there.” How many times have you heard that? I know I hear it all the time.

It can be incredibly unnerving and discouraging to try and present yourself to employers and recruiters when you start getting overwhelmed about the people you’re competing against as well as all of the qualifications the employers are looking for. However, it’s important to remember that you’re a student, and you’ve probably had a job, internship, class project, and/or papers to work on, which means you have qualifications to talk about! Sometimes you might not realize that the work you’re doing is building up particular skills, so it’s always helpful to take a step back and recognize the work you’re doing. By evaluating your skills and practicing your elevator pitch, you can boost your confidence and feel more prepared for job and internship interviews.

This Friday, March 4th from 12 to 1pm, there’s a Transferable Skills Workshop in Commons 328. This is an excellent opportunity to help you gain these skills. Whether you’re a freshman, alumni, or graduate student, this workshop is an awesome opportunity for you to identify what you’re good at and love to do, learn how to articulate with an employer, and learn how to make contacts in a field whenever you’re ready to make them! Doing this workshop could give you the confidence you need to find an internship or full-time job in the next few months. It could even help you decide on classes, internships, attending career fairs, and making connections.

You can also always check out the Career Center website for some help on evaluating your skills and pitching them to employers. If you’re still feeling unsure about what your skills might be, you can take one (or all) of our online assessments that will allow you to learn more about your interests, skills, and strengths, as well as what field of work you could fit into based on your results! Another great thing to do is to find out more about your major. You can do this by using the Career Insider Portal on the database Vault, LinkedIn, and your academic department website to check out some of the fields of work you might be interested in going into for your major.

You might already know what your strengths are, but are unsure about how to organize them. Our page on creating a 30 second commercial for yourself is a great resource for organizing your transferrable skills. A 30 second commercial is a concise way to identify who you are, some of your major strengths and accomplishments, and what you could contribute to an employer or company. This can be incredibly helpful for career fairs, networking, or answering that intimidating question from employers, “Why do you want to work for us?”

Having confidence in yourself is a significant part of finding a job, so I highly recommend attending this workshop or taking additional steps to get there!

As a dog volunteer I focus on walking the dogs, keeping them active, and giving them the social attention they need. On an average day I will go in and first check to see if any puppies have been brought in who need to go out, then I check on dogs who are housebroken or have just been taken off of stray hold. Stray hold means that dogs that are found as strays, have a 3 day probation period where they cannot be walked or taken into care by volunteers. During this time, the owner can claim back their dog. Then after these dogs have gone out, I walk the average healthy dogs in the shelter. Some of the more active dogs I take to the play yard and have them run off-leash. After healthy dogs have been cared for, I go into the sick- area. Here I have to put on throw-away scrubs and gloves before taking each dog out.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I got this service-learning opportunity through the Shriver Center as well as through the Honor's College. I had been looking for a course for Honor's 390 which was a volunteer course. I went to the Shriver Center and asked if there were any openings at BARCS because I have heard about their work in the past and was very interested. I was then put into contact with the student coordinator. She said she did not have any more spots in the van left but would be able to provide me work on Saturdays if I could provide my own transportation. This is what I decided to do and I drive myself and a friend of mine each week to the shelter. Because there are very few dog volunteers on Saturdays, my friend and I were able to be trained upon our second week at BARCS and started work quickly.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

I have enjoyed working with the different types of dogs the most while volunteering at BARCS. I find animals that are completely resilient to the way they have been treated and turn into incredible pets. I also find it wonderful to meet people who have the same passion for volunteering that I do.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I feel that I have made an impact through my work by giving dogs the type of attention and love they deserve. Each volunteer that the animals interact with makes them more accepting of human contact and more friendly towards people. The ultimate goal is to make them comfortable around people and make them adoptable.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

I would tell them to be ready for challenges but that the work is rewarding. Before I began to work at BARCS, I thought taking care of dogs would be easy. I am a huge animal person. But when I got there, I found dogs that were a bit more challenging to walk and train. However, working there longer has showed me how far animals can come and that they will find a happy and fitting home.

Like this story on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter!

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week?
