Intern of the Week: Chip Rittenhouse for MCS

<Tagline>Learn more about Chip's experience at Renegade Productions!</Tagline>

Name: Chip Rittenhouse

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Renegade Productions

Position Title: Production
    Assistant/Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s): Media and
    Communications/ Anthropology

Expected Graduation Year: Spring 2017

Briefly describe your internship, co-op,
or research opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks,
    responsibilities, and assignments.

At Renegade, I enter a workplace that is full of
eccentric creators where an atmosphere of collaboration and creativity are
contagious! Not only do I enter each day at Renegade with excitement at what
the day ahead may hold, but I also know that I will learn something new each
time I am there. Whenever filming a project for a client I am on set as a
supportive member of the production team who has input in terms of how
something looks on screen but also I gain first hand experience with set design
and handling professional level equipment which has been an immeasurable
opportunity. Whenever not on set with a client filming, I can be found in the
production department seeking out future clients for the company; or taking
part in pre-production, where I'm working on sound tracks or stock footage that
fit a genre of projects we are working on. On top of that, having the chance to
work with directors and producers at Renegade on a day-to-day basis and having
the opportunity to ask them questions about the industry firsthand is something
    I am incredibly thankful for.

Describe the process of obtaining your
    internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I attended a social event in Baltimore city
through the Maryland Film Industry Coalition. I also utilized UMBC Career
Center to learn how to approach the internship professionally.

What have you enjoyed the most about your
    position or organization/company?

I am working in the field with professionals in
the industry of commercial and cinematic production and so having the
opportunity to learn from them first hand is what I enjoy most. At times I feel
as though I should pinch myself because all the new things I am learning
at such a rapid pace seems unreal.

How do you believe you have made an
    impact through your work?

Keeping a client's project on schedule making
sure it doesn't go over and cost them more money than what was projected is a
major goal of mine each time I'm on a live set. However, moments that stick out
    to me the most is when I am thanked by the others on set for doing my job well;
it makes all the hard work that I am doing pay off and it is in that moment
where I feel as though I've made a true impact and have represented myself as a
    valuable member of the production.

What advice would you give to another
student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

This is a dream internship that I feel
incredibly thankful to have gotten. With that said, I attained this
internship through a very unique circumstance. It was complete happenstance
that the last person to leave the Maryland Film Industry Coalition event was a
director with the Renegade Productions department. Moreover, little did I know
this person who I struck a random conversation with would help me in attaining
an intern position with Renegade. So I suppose my bit of advice to any other
student struggling to find their ideal internship, or an internship in general,
perhaps taking a step outside of their comfort zone and thinking outside of the
box in terms of reaching out to prospective internships will garner the dream
internship they are seeking. Put yourself out there, whether it's in person or
having a strong social media presence, and I can almost guarantee that your
your name will come across someone’s desk along the way.

P.S. Sending a wide expanse of self introduction emails doesn't hurt your
    chances either!

Tips to help you land an internship!

Landing an internship is hard. I’ve poured hours into writing cover letters, perfecting writing samples, and tweaking my resume for so many of the internships I’ve applied for. I’ve probably applied to 20 different internships over the past two years, and I’ve only actually ever had 2 of them, so you can imagine how much time and effort went into each and every single one of those applications.

I found that starting the internship search was probably the hardest part of the process. For me, writing a resume from scratch and learning how to structure a cover letter were the most difficult tasks to tackle. I had no idea where to begin. Then I’d start stressing out about how I was never going to get an internship because all of my professional documents were horrible, and that led me down the dark path of “I’m never going to get into law school.”

It’s the never ending cycle of “I won’t ever get a job because I have no experience, and I have no experience because I have no job” that demotivated me from starting the process. But once I got rid of that misconception, things got a little easier. Employers know that we are college students with a million different responsibilities.

So how do you get started?

Create a resume- a task that’s easier said than done. Check out the Career Center’s website for a number of different tips that can help you complete your resume. From resume do’s and don’ts, to formatting and layout advice, you can find everything you need to start your resume on the website. After you’re done, come to the Career Center during drop-in hours (2-4 PM M-F, Math and Psych 201, and 6-8 PM Tu, Th, the Library’s Writing Center) to get your resume reviewed.

Start your search for internships and jobs. UMBCWorks is a great place to find different job postings, but if you’re not ready to go right into the search, check out this link to help you get started. Keep in mind that your resume, and any other document you submit with your application, should be specifically tailored to the position that you’re applying for. Pick and choose what is relevant!

Do your research. Not only on the companies that you’ve searched for online, but check out the Career Center’s calendar to see all of the different employers that are specifically coming to campus just to interact with UMBC students. These are great opportunities for you to get your foot in the door.

I know that trying to find an internship is scary, but if you put in the preparation and the time necessary to have a successful experience, you’ll see that it’s a lot easier than you may have thought.

<Tagline>Become an Urban Teachers Resident!</Tagline>

Change the Lives of Thousands While Changing Your Own.

Join Urban Teachers in Baltimore, Dallas/Fort Worth or Washington, DC

Urban Teachers is transforming the way people are prepared for a career in teaching. Through hands-on training, coaching and peer supports, we give teachers the skills they need to improve outcomes for students in high-need communities. By doing so, our teachers are changing the lives of the students, families and communities they serve, as well their own.

Urban Teachers is now taking applications for our Baltimore, Dallas/Fort Worth and Washington, DC Corps for the 2016-17 school year, with placement in mid- to late June 2017. Our recruitment process is selective. While there is no restriction on undergraduate or graduate major, we look for applicants who have exhibited academic excellence by maintaining a 3.0 GPA or higher, who gravitate to big challenges and have experience working with children. Urban Teachers participants are part of an unprecedented commitment to student performance: only those who demonstrate effective teaching practice, student learning gains and growth mindset/professionalism are recommended for certification (general and special education) and complete the full four-year program.

Urban Teachers participants are among the most expert and result-oriented in the nation because:

•We provide the best teacher preparation available. During the first year of the four-year program, before you start teaching on your own, you’ll spend 1,500 hours working with students in urban classrooms.

•During this time you also begin graduate coursework for a Master of Science in Education degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Education—ranked #2 in the country. All coursework is clinically based, allowing for immediate practice of learned skills in the classroom and equipping you with a toolbox of proven strategies for working with all students.

•Our four (4) years of mentoring and support tailored to your needs—from coaches and peers—is available longer than any other preparation program. This includes three (3) full years of one-on-one coaching to ensure you grow into an effective teacher. And, because Urban Teachers prepares you for the job from day one, you'll be able to quickly grow into a teacher leader, providing support and guidance to your colleagues in your school and city.

During the first year, participants receive a stipend from Urban Teachers. Starting your second year, you are the teacher of record and participants begin to receive full teacher’s pay. (Teacher salaries in Baltimore and DC are some of the highest in the nation. Both cities allow an effective teacher to earn six figures.)

As part of an Urban Teachers cohort in every school, you’re never alone. Being with other Urban Teachers participants provides an immediate network—in your school and in the thriving—Baltimore, Dallas/Fort Worth or Washington, DC. Urban Teachers educators are trusted by and form partnerships with their colleagues across schools. Teachers are respected community and civic leaders. Whether you’re doing home visits or running into your students’ families at the market, you’ll be having an impact on improving the neighborhood and community you’re living in.

Read More and Apply via UMBCworks:

Log in via myUMBC > Topics > Jobs & Internships

Make sure you have an approved resume under Documents.
