Your Summer To-Do List

<Tagline>Advice for everyone, even students who are graduating!</Tagline>

Where did the year go, guys? The sun is shining, but everyone is stressed with finals and projects and summer jobs and graduation … it’s a lot. I get it; I am right there with you. And if you’re graduating in a few weeks, that is a whole other level of stress! This can be a pretty crazy time of year, but we can all put our summertime to good use by taking the time to think about our own professional development and create goals for ourselves for the upcoming school year - or if you’re graduating, whatever your next step is!

If you already have a summer job, internship, or research experience - congratulations! If you want to take your summer experience to the next step, be sure to register for the Intern Success Practicum, a zero-credit pass/fail course that puts your experience on your transcript to give it more of an official, professional look. You can register on your UMBCworks account, or make an appointment at the Career Center to have a staff member help you register. It can only help you!

If you don’t have anything lined up for the summer yet, you are certainly not alone. You can still make an appointment to help with the job search, or just look through the 400+ summer job/internship postings that are on UMBCworks RIGHT NOW! There are plenty of opportunities; you just have to find them! Taking summer classes can also be a valuable use of time, and might even help you graduate early. Even volunteer positions at your local non-profit can be great skill-builders and resume boosters, so don’t despair if you’ve yet to find a summer position!

No matter what your situation or year in school, here is a Summer To-Do List:

Update your resume - make sure everything is up-to-date and spelled correctly. If you don’t want to come in for an appointment, our Resume Resource Page has plenty of information.

Critically think about your career path - even if you have decided your major and are confident in your career paths, there is a lot to be gained from continuously evaluating your goals and exploring all of your options. Who knows what you will find! Check out our resources for Discovering Your Options. You can also register for our Dependable Strengths Workshop on June 1st - a free full-day program that will build your confidence and help you take action toward career success.

Set some goals for yourself - are you bad at making decisions? Feel like you have some things you can improve on? Take some time to read about Decision Making and Goal Setting and think about what you want to get out of the next school year.

Graduating? We are still here! - If you are graduating soon, the Career Center’s resources are still available to you. See the attached flyer to learn more.

Even though the semester is closing up, we still have events! Stop by Commons Mainstreet on May 10th from 11:30-2pm to have your photo taken for #hearmebark and tell us what your next step is after graduation! Also, this year is the first year that UMBC is hosting the Maryland Career Consortium (MCC) Career Fair, with 100+ recruiters looking to hire students and alumni!
Announcing the Career Month Grand Prize Winner

<Tagline>Congratulations to Randy Deinlein!</Tagline>

The Career Center would like to congratulate Randy Deinlein (Mechanical Engineering) for winning our Career Month Grand Prize, two Southwest Airline Tickets. He and his traveling companion, Jessica Calle (Psychology, Social Work) increased their chances of winning by attending multiple Career Month events, collecting the various buttons while connecting with employers and learning how to advance their career. We asked them what their travel plans are and they stated they are wanting to travel to Arizona to experience the Grand Canyon first hand! We wish you two safe travels and hope everyone had a great time during this year’s Career Month. Be on the lookout for updates on next year’s Career Month events and how you could possibly be one of our future prize winners.

It is an information technology company that specializes in tech support and has recently ventured into cabling. During my internship, I shadowed the Vice-President of Operations and was given other jobs to do based on daily demands. This gave me insight to the behind the scenes workings of an information technology company at multiple levels of production. Some of the assignments given to me included: making weekly schedules in Microsoft Excel, policy research, creating filing systems for contractors, reorganizing existing files systems, and sorting papers which included receipts I later scanned into the company's “cloud.” I also watched many job interviews in which I gained insight into being a better interviewee and whom interviewers want to hire.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I obtained this position through the Department of Employment Services’ (DOES) Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment Program (MBSYEP). I have known of SYEP for many years through friends who have worked in the program during the summer. This was my first time attending this program. I got advice for my resume from the Career Center to help obtain this job.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I have enjoyed the organization’s culture. Code Red Technologies' culture is much different from a more formal cubicle job. This job makes you interact a lot with other employees, which is a good thing. This has made me become more outspoken to better communicate with others inside and outside the workplace. This company is like one big family to me!

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I believe I have made an impact through helping the Vice-President of Operations with work that may take longer to be completed. She was able to delegate specific jobs to me throughout the summer. She has an extensive “to do” list and is always busy doing something important for the well-being of the company. I benefited from the experience and was able to provide her with more time to directly manage employees and interview new hires.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

I would advise them to do their best at this job. It is okay to make mistakes as long as your supervisor or boss knows that you tried your best. Also ask questions if you are unsure about anything, so you will not make a mistake in the first place. An internship is the perfect place to preemptively learn what is required for specific jobs and to use the resources of staff/supervisors to build skills needed to be better employees in the future.

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week? Make sure to fill out this form and stay tuned.
Announcing the Reverse Career Fair Best Booth Winner

<Tagline>Congratulations to the UMBC Game Developers Club!</Tagline>

Earlier last month, the Career Center invited student organizations to participate in their annual Reverse Career Fair. This was a great opportunity for students to showcase their skills learned outside of the classroom to the wide array of employers that attended. It was also a unique way to connect with employers, as students were the ones to receive a table and representatives from companies would be the ones walking around. While they were walking around, employers had the opportunity to judge each organization by these four select criteria:

Did your booth represent the purpose/objective of your organization?

Were the accomplishments of your organization clearly defined?

Were the student representatives articulate and engaging?

Did your booth have an element of appeal that attracted the employer?

And the employers decided that the UMBC Game Developer's Club was the winner of the Best Booth Contest, winning a $200 cash prize for their student organization account! Some of the nice things that employers had to say about the students in this club were that they were "engaged, articulate. Good understanding of industry. Able to answer all questions with enthusiasm." Others mentioned their display, stating, "great display, great discussion. I asked a lot of questions and their answers were honest and informative" and that they "loved their interactive graphics." The Career Center congratulates the Game Developer's Club and all of the other student organizations that came out and helped made this event a success.
