Stand Out at the Career & Internship Fair

<Tagline>With these five creative tips</Tagline>

The Career &
Internship Fair on Wednesday, September 17, is your chance to meet
recruiters, explore opportunities, and make meaningful connections that can
launch your career. To stand out in a crowd of talented students and graduates,
a little strategy goes a long way. Here are five creative tips to help you
    shine on the big day.

1. Research Employers
    Ahead of Time

Before the fair, browse the list of attending organizations
    in the Directory
    and look up job
postings on Handshake and company websites of interest. Knowing which roles
interest you before arriving at the Fair allows you to approach employers with
specific questions and to see if there’s a specific team member to get in touch
with. Demonstrate genuine interest when connecting with employers — recruiters
    always notice.

2. Have Your Information
    Ready

Because there will be a QR code at every employer booth for
you to scan and share your information, make sure your Handshake profile is
updated and complete. You also want to upload
your latest resume to Handshake as well as keep a resume easily accessible
on your phone. A more common practice at fairs in recent years is for employers
to ask for a quick emailed resume or upload on their portal. Being ready with
digital documentation shows professionalism and preparedness.

3. Gamify Your Goals

Turn your fair experience into a game to keep you motivated.
Set specific goals before you arrive — like talking to at least five employers
in your field or collecting three relevant business cards. See how you can make
the most efficient route by looking up the map of employer booths in the Directory
beforehand. This not only keeps you going but also helps you track your
    progress and stay focused.

4. Team Up with a
    Friend

Networking can feel intimidating, but you don’t have to go
it alone. Partner with a friend to stay energized, practice your 30-second
commercials with each other, and share leads on must-visit employers. Just
remember to branch out so you each make your own connections and then reconnect
to take breaks and compare notes. If you need another way to practice
conversations prior to the Fair, check out the Big Interview platform.

5. Wear a Statement
    Piece

First impressions matter, and a subtle statement accessory —
like a bold tie, a bright scarf, or a unique pin — can help you be remembered. Just
make sure it complements your professional attire and reflects your personality
while keeping things polished. There will be an opportunity to get a professional
headshot taken at the Fair as well, so you want to look sharp.

Career Fair Ready!

The Career & Internship
Fair is one of the best ways to connect with employers and land internships
or full-time roles. Use these tips to get ready and stand out on September 17!
    We’ll see you there!

Intern of the Week: Viyali Bhattacharjee

<Tagline>Check out Viyali's Internship!</Tagline>

Name: Viyali Bhattacharjee

Pronouns: She/Her

Semester of Internship: Summer 2025

Major: Environmental Engineering

Current Class Level: Master's Student

This semester I completed a(n)...: Internship

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site (Company/Organization
    Name): TYLin

Location of the Organization (City, State):
    Alexandria, Virginia

Title of position: Intern Engineering Designer

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research
    opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:

My internship at TYLin as an Intern Engineering Designer in
the Water division has been both technically enriching and personally
rewarding. On a day-to-day basis, I have worked on condition assessment
reports, supported stormwater management initiatives, and contributed to water
and wastewater infrastructure projects. I also had the opportunity to work on
the Community Rating System (CRS) project conducted by FEMA, which focuses on
improving floodplain management practices and reducing flood insurance costs
for residents. Along the way, I developed technical skills in ArcGIS Pro and
ArcMap, assisted with data analysis and mapping, and gained exposure to the
permit review process and water treatment plant design. The balance between
meaningful technical tasks and a supportive, collaborative work environment has
made this internship a transformative experience.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did
you hear of the position and submit your application?

I came across the TYLin internship posting in December 2025
and decided to apply. After submitting my application, I received an email from
HR around 2nd week of January for an initial screening interview, which I
completed in January last week. In early March, I received a call while I was
at school, asking if I was still available for the internship. I shared my
updated resume, and shortly after, on the 2nd week of March, my future mentor
reached out to schedule a team interview. I had that interview after 3 days,
which turned out to be an engaging and welcoming conversation with the team. On
the very next day, I received the exciting news that I had been selected. It
was truly a memorable moment, as I felt both grateful and motivated to begin
    this new chapter.

What resources did you use to find your current
    experience?

LinkedIn or other social media

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and
    organization?

Honestly, my internship at TYLin feels less like “just work”
and more like joining a family that somehow knows how to throw a lunch party
for every little occasion. From boat rides behind the office creek to surprise
gifts that matched my hobbies (painting colors, books, even baking utensils!),
I’ve realized this team celebrates people just as much as projects. And in
between all the fun, I’ve gotten to dive deep into water and wastewater
projects that genuinely shape sustainable communities. It’s the perfect mix of
    heart and hard hats!

How do you believe you have made an impact through your
    work?

I think my impact came from the “little big things.” Whether
it was writing condition assessment reports, supporting stormwater management
projects, or contributing to water treatment designs, I brought my dedication
and fresh perspective as a student. But beyond the technical work, I also tried
to spread positivity—asking questions, sharing ideas, and reminding my team
that enthusiasm can be contagious (in a good way, not the viral way!).

What advice would you give to another student who is
seeking an internship or similar experience?

Treat your internship like a two-way street: you’re not just
there to learn, but also to add value. Ask questions—even the “silly” ones
(those usually spark the best discussions). Build relationships with mentors
and colleagues, because the people you meet often teach you more than the
manuals. And most importantly, bring your whole self—your skills, your
curiosity, and even your hobbies—because you never know when your love for
painting or baking might lead to an unexpected bond with your team.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you
liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the
    Career Center.

The best part of my position was being surrounded by mentors
and colleagues who celebrated learning, collaboration, and even my hobbies. The
Career Center helped me refine my resume to land this opportunity, and the PRAC
course equipped me with the professional skills to grow and prepare for the
    industry.

Launch Your Career Before Graduation

<Tagline>And get started on your future with these tips.</Tagline>

Graduating soon? Whether you’re wrapping up your
undergraduate or graduate degree, the final semester isn’t just about finishing
papers and projects — it’s also about preparing for what comes next. The good
news is that you don’t have to wait until after commencement to start your job
search or build your professional momentum. With the right strategy, you can
step confidently into the workforce before you toss that cap in the air.

1. Start Early and Stay Organized

Employers often begin recruiting well before graduation
dates. Create a system to track job postings, applications, and follow-ups,
whether that’s through a platform like Huntr or
just a good old spreadsheet. Treat your job search like another class — set
deadlines, make checklists, and hold yourself accountable. Find an
accountability buddy, if possible, who is also graduating.

2. Leverage Your Network

Your professors, advisors, classmates, and alumni are
valuable connections. Share your career goals and ask for advice or
    introductions. Check out Retrievers
    Connect or LinkedIn
for possible leads to request informational
interviews. A single conversation could open doors to opportunities you
    didn’t even know existed.

3. Polish Your Professional Materials

Your resume and LinkedIn
profile should reflect your most recent projects, internships, and
accomplishments. Tailor each application to the role you want by emphasizing
relevant skills and measurable outcomes. Quantify your achievements whenever
you can, and don’t just reiterate your job description. Showcase the impact
    you’ve made on an organization.

4. Gain Exposure Beyond the Classroom

If you still have time before graduation, consider
    short-term opportunities like micro-internships,
    freelance projects, job simulations, or
research assistant roles. These experiences show employers your initiative and
ability to apply what you’ve learned.

5. Prepare for Interviews with Confidence

Practice common interview questions, prepare stories that
highlight your strengths using the STAR
    technique, and rehearse your 30-second
commercial. Confidence comes from preparation — so put in the time now to
reduce nerves later. You can even practice by doing a mock interview through
    the Big Interview
platform or by scheduling a Career Center appointment.

Put It All Into Action

Want more strategies to help you transition from student to
professional? Join us for the Career Launch

action-packed afternoon designed to give you the skills, strategies, and
confidence to land your first post-grad role. You’ll learn how to leverage AI
tools, impress employers, and make meaningful connections over a free
networking lunch. We hope to see you there!

Intern of the Week: Gabriel Farmer

<Tagline>Check out Gabriel's Internship at T.Rowe Price!</Tagline>

Name: Gabriel Farmer

Pronouns: He/Him

Semester of Internship: Summer 2025

Major: Computer Science

Current Class Level: Junior

This semester I completed a(n)...: Internship

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site (Company/Organization
    Name): T. Rowe Price

Location of the Organization (City, State): Owings
    Mills, MD

Title of position: Global Technology Intern (Software
    Engineering)

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research
    opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:

During my time at T. Rowe Price I worked together with a
talented team of developers to help support the firm. I was tasked with
multiple projects spanning weeks at a time, and was tasked to use problem
solving skills and time management to complete the projects within the
necessary time frame. It was a social and collaborative environment as each day
I’d have a meeting with the whole team and many smaller ones throughout the day
connecting me with other software engineers or colleagues at the firm who I collaborated
with on facets of the project. It was an amazing opportunity, and a chance for
growth as I gained hands-on experience and insight into the actual day to day
    work of a software engineer.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did
you hear of the position and submit your application?

There is an outreach program held by T. Rowe Price early
summer called launching your legacy. That program is two days of networking and
information sessions with the hopes to connect to recruiters and others
throughout the firm as well as learn about the history, culture, and goals of
    T. Rowe. Throughout that program I gained great insight into T. Rowe, and had
the chance to connect to my recruiter, and other software engineers and
previous interns to who granted me amazing advice and support. This support
continued during the application process, as my recruiter connected me to
previous or current interns who could answer any questions I have, and would
set me up for practice sessions to prepare for the interview. When applications
opened and I’d applied, my recruiter communicated with me throughout the whole
process and gave me any advice that I needed. After a behavioral and slightly
technical interview I was able to receive the position and have the great
opportunity to work at T. Rowe Price for the summer.

What resources did you use to find your current
    experience?

Hackathon, Launch your Legacy

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and
    organization?

What I enjoyed most about the organization was the culture.
There was never a point where I felt that I couldn’t ask a question, or that I
felt out of place. They prioritize community and collaboration. At first I only
heard employees say that it was like that, and they even had a catchphrase of
“T. Rowe Nice”, but after my short time there it showed me that it truly is
that way. There’s never a moment you can’t reach out to someone, ask a
question, schedule a quick meeting, and it was amazing to be a part of a
culture that knew the importance of connection and community.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your
    work?

I believe I made an impact in my work through doing my part
for the team. There was no “Intern project” that I’m tasked with that
contributed nothing to the team. All of my projects were tasks that were
necessary for the team to continue their work. From changing emails that are
sent all across the firm, or developing comparison tests vital for a database
migration, each project I had felt huge to me, but was truly just a step in the
long run. Knowing that my work will be seen and utilized in all of these large
projects, and that my work, even the small tasks, are helping someone will
always be impactful to me. Being a part of the larger mission and leaving an
impression through my work to support the company even while I’m gone.

What advice would you give to another student who is
seeking an internship or similar experience?

Skills are what can get you an interview, but your
personality and attitude is what leaves an impression. Being able to connect
personally to those you network with is vital to the process. Once you have
those connections, build them up and maintain them. I wouldn’t have the
position I did if I’d not connected to those in the firm or my recruiter, and
having people inside who support you throughout the process, will only make it
easier for you to land that position you dream of.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you
liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the
    Career Center.

I couldn’t be more grateful to be on a team where no task
lacked importance, and no question was too small. Without the career center I
wouldn’t have built the confidence to apply to these positions, or the
knowledge on networking that has helped me so much throughout this process.

The Reality of On-Campus Work

<Tagline>FYI: the demand is often greater than what’s available</Tagline>

At the start of a new academic year, many students arrive at UMBC hoping to land an on-campus job right away. These roles can be a great way to earn income, build experience, and connect with the campus community. But before getting too caught up in the excitement of applying, it’s important to understand the reality: on-campus jobs are limited and highly competitive.

Why On-Campus Jobs Are Limited

On-campus roles are in high demand at UMBC, and the number of positions is usually much smaller than the number of students who apply. Many jobs open only at certain times of year, and some positions prioritize students who are work-study eligible. For international students in particular who are typically only eligible to work on campus their first year, this means the competition is even tougher.

How to Stand Out as an Applicant

While you can’t control the number of jobs available, you can control how you present yourself:

Polish Your Resume: Make sure it’s clear, concise, and highlights skills relevant to the position.

Be Flexible: Consider a variety of roles across campus — from administrative offices to research roles to tutoring. The more flexible you are, the more opportunities you’ll find.

Show Initiative: Demonstrate reliability, professionalism, and a willingness to learn. Employers want students who will show up on time and contribute positively.

Leverage Connections: Talk to peers, faculty, and staff who might know of openings. Sometimes opportunities are shared through word of mouth.

Other Ways to Gain Experience

If you don’t land an on-campus job right away, don’t lose hope. There are many other ways to build skills that employers value:

Volunteer with campus organizations or community groups.

Join student clubs to practice leadership and teamwork.

Consider programs and initiatives at The Shriver Center that focuses on community-engaged, applied learning.

Work on personal or research projects that showcase your talents.

Explore short-term, project-based experiences like micro-internships from Parker Dewey.

Remember: not having an on-campus job doesn’t mean you’re falling behind. Employers care about the skills and experiences you bring — not just where they came from.

Take the Next Step

Missed this week’s On-Campus & Part-Time Jobs Expo? It’s not too late to reach out to employers. Check out the Directory to see who’s hiring, and find their positions on Handshake. Ask questions and make connections along the way. Good luck, and reach out to the Career Center for more support as needed.
