Is Group Counseling Right for Me? Yes!

<Tagline>A message from RIH's Groups Coordinator, Lauren Mirzakhalili</Tagline>

When I started college, no academic task filled me with dread more than the group project. Working with others is uncomfortable and brings up questions such as "Will I have to do everything?" or, on the other extreme, "Will I not bring enough to the table?"

Despite the dread that may come when a professor announces that there will be a group project, group work is necessary for higher education and everything that comes after. An African proverb says, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." (For the record, I don't love attributing a proverb to an entire continent, but it seems like many people more knowledgeable than me have not been able to trace its origins: https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2016/07/30/487925796/it-takes-a-village-to-determine-the-origins-of-an-african-proverb.)

As an undergraduate, imagining my future life, I pictured a solitary existence and did not imagine much work with others. My imagination was far from the reality of my life as a therapist. I need a lot from other people. I need to work closely with my colleagues to consult about my therapy techniques and whether they are the best for the students I am working with. I depend on the researchers who verify that our field's practices are evidence-based and genuinely work. I depend on our team at RIH, who can treat and support different elements of the student experience. I think you're getting the gist. Life, for better or worse, is a group project.

The learning and growing that best prepares us for the rest of our lives can happen in groups. Otherwise, we would not be assigned these group projects year after year. This applies to therapy as well. Often, the concerns that people come to talk about in therapy are related to the "interpersonal" (i.e., our relationships with others). Difficulties making friends, keeping friends, trusting others, and trusting ourselves with others, are all very human and interpersonal concerns. Getting to explore these concerns as they are happening within the boundaries of ethical group therapy practices can be a powerful group project, but it's one that you get to choose for yourself.

At RIH we offer a wide variety of group counseling. We have skills-based groups such as Skills Training in the Application of Interpersonal Regulation (STAIR), which I often explain to students as an excellent entry into group therapy and, at times, might feel more like a class. You will learn concrete skills to understand and regulate emotions, become more mindful, and approach relationships in new ways. We also have more open-ended process groups, such as Reflecting Retrievers. In this type of group, you can explore how you show up for yourself and others and try out different ways of approaching relationships. There is something for everyone within our group program. If you are interested in joining a group, please call our main line (410-455-2542) to request an initial consultation appointment.

RePost: Fall 2023 Public Health and COVID-19 Update

Dear UMBC Community,

As we enter the fall 2023 semester, UMBC's leadership continues to be committed to the health and well-being of all in our community. We are monitoring the rates of respiratory virus in our community, and are attentive to both COVID-19 rates and influenza, among others. UMBC's health experts routinely engage with county, state, and federal resources to understand trends and current health conditions.

As a key part of protecting the health of all on campus, we ask that each of you monitor your health and be careful to avoid exposing others if you have cold or flu symptoms. Consult your healthcare provider or Retriever Integrated Health if you need testing or care. To reduce the spread of infectious diseases on campus, cover your cough, wear a mask, and wash your hands. Minimizing your exposure to others while sick is particularly important as we all strive to protect health-compromised and other vulnerable members of our community. You can minimize exposure to others when sick by staying home if you are a faculty, staff, or student who is commuting to campus or following any related guidelines if you are a student living in residence.

In addition, we ask that you continue to Keep Masks in Mind. The university will provide high- quality KN95 masks to those in need. Masks will be available at the RAC, the Library, and The Commons Information Center. If your professor, colleague, or other community member requests that you wear a mask in a classroom, meeting, or other situation, we ask that you respect their wishes and needs.

Finally, remember that vaccination is one of the most effective ways to prevent severe illness. Retriever Integrated Health will be offering both COVID-19 and influenza vaccination clinics throughout the fall. We will share dates and additional information with the community soon.

Amid the busyness that the semester can bring, please remember to take care of yourself and prioritize your health and well-being. Thank you for your support of one another and our community as we all work together to stay as healthy as possible.

David Dauwalder, Interim Provost

Renique T.
Welcome Retrievers!

<Tagline>RIH welcomes new and returning students for Fall 2023!</Tagline>

A message from Retriever Integrated Health Director, Dr. Bruce Herman:

I want to welcome everyone to UMBC or back to UMBC.

For students, college life can be an exciting time- lots of opportunities for new experiences, relationships, and learning about the world and ourselves. It can sometimes also be a difficult and stressful time that can challenge a student's emotional and physical health. Some students may feel they need extra support to cope with personal issues that may be interfering with their ability to make the most of their UMBC experience and others may just benefit from our range of health and mental health services.

Through trauma-informed, culturally sensitive counseling services, our counselors work collaboratively with students to improve their emotional well-being, balance priorities, enhance interpersonal relationships, empower them with useful coping skills to attain success in and out of the classroom, and support them to access additional outside services to meet their needs. Our counselors come from a variety of backgrounds and specializations.

All counseling services are free and confidential. We provide short-term individual counseling, group counseling, performance enhancement consultations, as well as crisis intervention, outreach, consultation, and referral services. For faculty staff and student families our counseling team is available to consult regarding how to support a student. We also offer Question Persuade Refer (QPR) training on how to support someone in mental health distress.

For students, our medical team provides both primary and limited urgent care services, including annual well and gynecological (GYN) visits, updating vaccinations and boosters, screening for various diseases, and treating acute illnesses and minor injuries. We also provide psychiatry, massage, and acupuncture services, as well as dietician consultations. Faculty and staff are eligible to receive limited urgent care type services, such as the evaluation and treatment of acute illnesses and minor injuries. Massage and acupuncture services are also available.
