Q: What are the Writing Center’s hours?
A: During the fall and spring semesters the Writing Center hours are as follows:
Mon-Thurs: 10AM-7PM
Fri: 10AM-2PM
Q: What kinds of assignments can I bring to the Writing Center?
A: Any essay, response, or assignment with a written component is fair game for a tutoring session at the Writing Center.
Q: Does the Writing Center offer tutoring in specific content areas?
A: Although the Writing Center does not offer tutoring in content areas, our tutors have different specialties here at the Writing Center, so if you are looking for help with a paper for a specific subject, check the short bios posted about our tutors on umbc.mywconline.com. For more content-oriented tutoring, please contact the Learning Resources Center (located on the 3rd floor of Sherman Hall East Wing) or the Math Lab (located in the Retriever Learning Center in the Library).
Q: Can you make appointments at the Writing Center?
A: Absolutely! The Writing Center offers appointment tutoring in addition to limited walk-in tutoring. Just go to umbc.mywconline.com, and a list of our tutors and their availabilities will show up. Simply click on an available time slot and fill out the short appointment info form.
Q: How long is a typical session at the Writing Center?
A: 45 minutes, but they may be shorter or longer depending on the length and nature of the assignment.
Q: How are the Writing Center tutors trained?
A: All Writing Center tutors complete an intensive tutoring internship course, English 395, in order to work in the Writing Center which includes shadowing an experienced tutor and being observed in sessions. Many of our tutors hold additional tutoring certifications from higher level courses as well. Further, tutors must maintain a 3.0 GPA and report all tutoring sessions to the Writing Center Director.
