Red Ribbon Week: PSA Contest
Commitment to a healthy, drug-free lifestyle
Hey Retrievers!
UMBC is participating in the DEA's (Drug Enforcement Administration) annual Red Ribbon Week PSA Contest!
Red Ribbon Week is has since become an annual event demonstrating intolerance for drugs in our nation’s schools, workplaces, and communities. Each year from October 23–31, people across the United States show their commitment to a healthy, drug-free lifestyle by wearing or displaying the Red Ribbon.
This year’s Campus Video PSA Contest theme is: Commitment to a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
All students are welcome to submit their 30-60 second PSA using the following link: Red Ribbon PSA Contest by Nov 5, 2018.
A campus winner will be selected and will go on to represent UMBC in the national Red Ribbon Week PSA Contest!
The campus winner will receive a prize pack for their participation. National winning college or university will receive a plaque, $3000 to enhance the alcohol and other drug prevention efforts of their campus, and registration and accommodations for the 2019 NASPA Strategies Conference in Washington, DC.
Contest Rules:
- To be eligible for judging, an entry must meet the following content and technical requirements:
- The PSA must be between 30–60 seconds. PSAs that exceed 60 seconds will be disqualified.
- The PSA must focus on the underlying message behind Red Ribbon Week and the commitment to a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

- The PSA must focus on preventing alcohol abuse and drug abuse among college students.
- Entries that focus only on alcohol abuse or only on drug abuse will be disqualified.
- The PSA must resonate with its intended audience (i.e., college students) and inspire others to take action to prevent alcohol abuse and drug abuse among college students.
- The Entry must be uploaded to the entrant’s own YouTube, Vimeo, or Daily Motion account and a link to the video must be provided as part of the Entry.
- The Entry cannot be previously submitted in a promotion of any kind or exhibited or displayed publicly through any means.
- Entrants must obtain all applicable consents, approvals, or licenses to submit their Entry.

Deadline Approaching for ASB Applications!
Have a question you want to explore related to a social issue? Apply to be an Alternative Spring Break leader and develop and facilitate a trip around that question in Baltimore City!
Trips have explored a variety of questions, such as:
- How are food disparities created, perpetuated, and challenged in Baltimore City?
- What is the relationship between growth in Baltimore and the quality of life for disenfranchised residents? What can be done to address community displacement?
- How do people who have been formerly incarcerated transition back to living and working in Baltimore City? What can be done to support that transition?
- How do healthcare disparities affect Baltimoreans’ sexual health and healthy relationships?
- How do individuals with disabilities experience social injustices? What can be done to address this issue?
- What are the difficulties and barriers that people experiencing homelessness face in Baltimore and what can be done to mitigate those issues?
Trip leaders can choose from those questions or propose additional ones.
All undergraduate students are invited to apply. Leaders need to be motivated, committed, creative, and detailed-oriented to plan and lead a high quality trip. Preferred but not required: Applicants will have participated in a previous ASB trip or similar extended experiential learning program.
Applications are due October 1st.
The University System of Maryland encompasses 12 institutions, including UMBC, and two regional higher education centers. It employs more than 17,000 faculty members and 21,000 staff members, and owns almost 1,000 buildings. Its annual operating budget is more than $5 billion. There are more than 175,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at its various institutions. But only one of them gets to participate directly in the decisions of the Board of Regents, the system's governing body. Four times in the past 16 years, that one student--the Student Regent--has come from UMBC. Could you be next?
The application deadline is Tuesday, October 23rd at 5:00 P.M. Tomorrow is UMBC's New Student Convocation 2018. Unfortunately, it looks like the heat index for tomorrow is 105 degrees. For your safety, we have decided to CANCEL the Convocation Line Up scheduled for 2:45 p.m. in Lot 4! Convocation will still take place at the UMBC Event Center and is required for ALL Incoming students. Please bring your Red Card ID!
Welcome Week Leaders will be instructed to bring you DIRECTLY TO CONVOCATION. Please plan to be in front of the building by 3:00 p.m. to begin filing into the UMBC Event Center!
Over the years, many stakeholders, both
inside and outside UMBC, have had difficulty discerning what we do based on the
name of our office. After more than a calendar year researching options,
exploring focus-group and survey respondent feedback about different possible names
for our office, and debating amongst ourselves the benefits and drawbacks of
various naming options, we have decided on a new name:
Student Conduct and Community Standards
This name is a mash-up
of “Student Conduct,” which is the preferred name for most conduct offices
across the country, while adding a phrase that has currency for our campus.The
addition of “Community Standards” emphasizes the importance of community at
UMBC. Also:
- The
name focuses on both individual responsibility and community responsibility
- One
of the goals of restorative practices is repairing relationships which fits nicely
with the concept of building community
- The
inclusion of “Community Standards” emphasizes that we have a broader focus than
just talking about discipline
- The
use of “Community Standards” signals to campus partners our desire to
collaborate around the creation and maintenance of standards for behavior in
all realms of the student experience

UMBC Out of the Darkness Campus Walk - THIS SATURDAY (4/28)
Hosted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
Suicide prevention starts with everyday heroes like you. Join us on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at UMBC as we walk to fight suicide and raise awareness about mental health. Be a part of the movement turning hope into action, and create a culture that’s smart about mental health. Funds raised at the walks will benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
There will be memorial activities to honor loved ones and resource tables to visit before and after the walk.
Our registration and the start of the walk will be at the Retriever Activities Center (RAC). We will end our walk back at the RAC.
Parking is free in the Administration Garage that Saturday.
