The Haven at UMBC meetings and social activities are open to ALL students and are a great way to connect to a peer support community.
At Haven meetings, students can open up to fellow classmates, in a judgment-free space, about anything from substance use to navigating life as a college student.

Apply for University System of Maryland Student Regent
Represent 176,000 students on the System's governing board
The University System of Maryland encompasses 12 institutions, including UMBC, and three regional higher education centers. It employs more than 18,000 faculty members and 21,000 staff members, and owns almost 1,100 buildings. Its annual operating budget is more than $5 billion. There are more than 176,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at its various institutions.
How would you like to represent all of those students as a member of the Board of Regents, the system's governing body? Four times in the past 17 years, the Student Regent has come from UMBC. Could you be next?
Please take a look at this description of the Student Regent position and consider applying. Please also pass the information along to friends who may be interested. Two students will be selected this year to reflect the addition of a second Student Regent position on the Board. One of the selected students will serve from Winter 2020 through June 30, 2021; the other from July 1, 2020 through June 30, 2022.
The application deadline is Monday, October 21st at 5:00 p.m. [Updated!]. Here is the application. Submit completed applications in hard copy to David Hoffman's mailbox in Commons 336, or email the application form and essays to dhoffman@umbc.edu. Civic Engagement 2020
Collegetown Underground Civic Engagement will focus on how college students can be active citizens in the Baltimore region. With 2020 being an election and census year, students will learn about the ways they can participate in the government and local communities. The program will explore the history and landscape of local civic engagement and connect students with elected officials and community leaders.
Who Should Apply?
- Civic-minded students who want to learn more about Baltimore's issues and opportunities
- Baltimore Collegetown Network undergraduate and graduate students from any major or program
- Those able to commit to all the program dates
$100 cost to cover food and lodging.

UMBC Leaders Share Insights, Forge Connections at CLDE19
The UMBC delegation to last week's 2019 Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement Meeting in Fort Lauderdale shared insights and forged connections with colleagues from across the U.S. 20 members of the UMBC community participated, including Provost Philip Rous and leaders from the Shriver Center, Honors College, Sondheim Public Affairs Scholars Program, Student Affairs, SGA, and other student organizations (full list at the end of this post).
Throughout the conference, the organizers ran a survey asking participants to share a one-word definition of civic learning and democratic engagement. Here's a word cloud of the participants' responses.
10 of the UMBC participants led a session entitled "Change the Meanings, Change the Culture," about how UMBC has developed a robust civic culture that bridges academic affairs and student affairs.
The Center for Democracy and Civic Life's David Hoffman and Romy Hübler led a session called "Engaged Pedagogy and Civic Learning: Promoting Civic Agency" with Erica Kohl-Arenas, Faculty Director of Imagining America, and Robin Bachin, Assistant Provost for Civic and Community Engagement at the University of Miami. David and Romy also led "Thrive Your Pedagogy: Creating Mutual and Reciprocal Environments for Student Learning" with Craig Berger, a former UMBC colleague now at Kent State University.
David also spoke at the opening plenary session about the
Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement Theory of Change, a forward-looking document around which the past three national CLDE meetings have been organized. The CLDE Theory of Change draws heavily on UMBC experiences and examples. In addition, Romy and David worked with colleagues from Grand Valley State University and Kent State University to launch a process of developing new tools to promote civic courage, one of the CLDE Theory of Change learning outcomes. Their work on those tools is supported by a grant from
Bringing Theory to Practice.
