<Title>Register, Pledge, and Plan to Vote in Election 2022</Title>

    <div class="html-content">UMBC has a strong tradition of very active participation in state and national elections, with exceptional student turnout. This year, Marylanders will elect a new governor as well as new state and federal legislators. The general election will take place on November 8. <strong>You will be able to cast your vote on the UMBC campus</strong> by requesting a mail ballot and depositing the completed ballot in the dropoff box that will be located in The Commons from late September through early November.<br><br>Use these resources to prepare for Election 2022:<br><br><ul><li><strong>Register to vote in Maryland:</strong> Maryland’s voter registration deadline for the 2022 general election is October 18. <a href="https://umbc.edu/go/voterregistration" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC’s voter registration portal</a> will help you take the first steps to registering to vote regardless of where you live. If you are a Maryland resident, you also can go straight to the <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/go/mdvoterregistration" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">state’s online portal</a>.</li></ul><ul><li><strong>Request a mail ballot, then vote in The Commons:</strong> Registered Maryland voters can complete an online request for a mail-in ballot <a href="https://voterservices.elections.maryland.gov/OnlineMailinRequest/InstructionsStep1" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">here</a>. Once you have received and completed your ballot, you can submit it by <strong>placing it in the official Board of Elections dropoff box in the lobby of The Commons (near the Campus Information Center desk)</strong>. No postage is necessary. The Board of Elections will pick up ballots placed in the box daily.</li></ul><ul><li><strong>Make a pledge to vote:</strong> Every election year, ALL IN to Vote hosts a Pledge to Vote leaderboard for university students across the country. <strong>UMBC placed #9 in the nation on the leaderboard in 2020.</strong> This year, let's reach #1! <a href="https://allintovote.org/take-the-pledge/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Take the pledge</a>, and spread the word.</li></ul><ul><li><strong>Access Maryland and out-of-state voter resources:</strong> Find the latest information, including dates for early voting and deadlines to request mailed and electronic ballots, on the UMBC Center for Democracy and Civic Life <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/go/voterregistration" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">website</a>.</li></ul><ul><li><strong>Serve as election judge:</strong> The Baltimore County Board of Elections is <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/civiclife/posts/118570" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">recruiting election judges</a> to work at polling stations during the 2022 general election. <Title>Residential Life's Seymour Chambers Appointed</Title>
<Tagline>to Association for Student Conduct Administration Leadership</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>In September 2022, Seymour Chambers, assistant director of residential student conduct and community well-being, was appointed as the co-chair for the Historically Underrepresented Institutions community of practice for the Association for Student Conduct Administration. In this capacity, Chambers will be working with Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribal Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, and schools that have large underserved populations, to get them active in the Association and provide assistance to them in addressing student conduct on their campuses. </span></p><br><p><span>Chambers joined the UMBC community in August 2022 after serving as </span><span>the chief judicial officer at Morgan State University for 19 years.</span></p><div><span><br></span></div></span></div>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>Office of Health Promotion Director, Samantha Smith, Ph.D., M.P.H., CHES, is the co-author of <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/07448481.2022.2119404" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">"In harm's way: Do college students' beliefs about cannabis put them at risk for use?"</a> The article was published in the <em>Journal of American College Health</em> on September 9, 2022. </span></p><br><p><span>The study describes beliefs held by college students about cannabis use and examines the association between three specific cannabis beliefs and likelihood of use. The authors' findings suggest that beliefs unsupported by scientific evidence are widespread among college students. Dispelling misinformation about cannabis might hold promise for reducing use.</span></p><br><p><span>In August 2022, the Office of Health Promotion became its own department within the Division of Student Affairs and Smith was promoted to Director. The Office of Health Promotion was previously part of Retriever Integrated Health.</span></p><div><span><br></span></div></span></div>

<Title>September is Sexual Health Awareness Month</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>September is Sexual Health Awareness month! Sexual health is about more than sex - it's being able to recognize and maintain healthy relationships, understanding your body, exploring your sexuality, promoting healthy sexual behaviors, and preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unplanned pregnancy. There is a lot that falls under the comprehensive sexual health umbrella. </span></p><p><span>Here are a few tools to help you learn more about your sexual health:</span></p><p><strong><span>The first step to any sexual activity is always to obtain c</span><a href="https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/relationships/sexual-consent" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>onsent</span></a><span> with a sexual partner(s)</span></strong></p><ul><li><span>Consenting to and obtaining consent for sexual activity is a requirement of engaging in sexual activity.</span></li><li>You must ask someone if they want to have sex or be touched (kissing, hugging, etc.).</li><li>If someone says "no", then you must stop immediately. Remember, the absence of "no" <span>does not </span><span>mean "yes."</span></li></ul><p><span>Once you have consented/received consent, you must now protect yourself and your partner(s).  </span><strong><a href="https://www.bedsider.org/methods" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Contraceptive methods</span></a><span> work well to prevent </span><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/std/default.htm" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>STIs</span></a><span> and/or pregnancy, when used correctly.</span></strong></p><ul><li><span>If you choose to engage in sexual activity, use condoms (</span><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/condomeffectiveness/external-condom-use.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>external</span></a><span> or </span><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/condomeffectiveness/internal-condom-use.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>internal</span></a><span>) or </span><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/condomeffectiveness/Dental-dam-use.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>dental dams</span></a><span> (for oral sex) every time. </span></li><li><a href="https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/birth-control/abstinence-and-outercourse" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Abstinence</span></a><span> is the only 100% contraceptive method that can prevent pregnancy and STI transmission. </span></li><li><a href="https://www.bedsider.org/methods" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Birth control</span></a><span> prevents pregnancy but does not prevent STIs - condoms and birth control work together.</span></li><li>The Office of Health Promotion has condoms (internal and external), lubricant, and dental dams available for all students free of cost.</li></ul><p><span><strong>If you are sexually active, it is critical to know your status and your partners.</strong></span></p><ul><li><span>Get tested regularly for STIs. Find free (and confidential) testing sites </span><a href="https://gettested.cdc.gov/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>here. </span></a></li><li>If you ever experience itching, burning, bleeding (outside of menstruating), or discolored discharge in your genital area, then see your health provider immediately.</li></ul><p><strong><span>Sexual health also includes having open conversations with your friends and partners about </span><a href="https://www.healthline.com/health/healthy-relationship#characteristics" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>healthy relationships</span></a><span> and behaviors. </span></strong></p><ul><li><span>Know the difference between healthy and </span><a href="https://www.joinonelove.org/signs-unhealthy-relationship/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>unhealthy relationships</span></a><span>.</span></li><li>Practice healthy communication skills with everyone in your life - romantic and platonic.</li></ul><p><span>Remember, it is your responsibility to protect yourself and your sexual partner(s) from STIs. This month (and beyond), challenge yourself to have </span><a href="https://www.ashasexualhealth.org/talking-about-sex/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>open conversations</span></a><span> with your friends and sexual partner(s) about all things sexual health. <Title>Sleep Better, Feel Better</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Are you feeling tired? Going to bed but waking up not feeling rested? Getting only a few hours of sleep? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, keep reading! </div><div><br></div><div>With all the excitement and stress that may come with the start of a new school year, having healthy sleep patterns can be easily forgotten. </div><div><br></div><div><strong>Sleep is an undervalued aspect of well-being</strong>. During the collegiate years, sleep is often rated as a low priority for students, especially around midterms and finals week. </div><div><br></div><div><strong>Sleep deprivation, or not getting enough sleep, is a recurring problem for college students, including students at UMBC</strong>. A few <a href="https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/conditionsandtreatments/sleep-deprivation#lp-h-2" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">reasons for sleep deprivation</a> are:</div><div><ul><li>stress</li><li>sleep disorders</li><li>eating and drinking late at night</li><li>consuming too much caffeine, alcohol, and sleep aids</li></ul></div><div><strong>Why is sleep such a big deal?</strong> The <a href="http://healthysleep.med.harvard.edu/healthy/matters/benefits-of-sleep" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">benefits</a> of getting enough sleep include:</div><div><ul><li>reduced stress levels </li><li>improved mood </li><li>avoiding accidents or injuries that occur as a result of being sleepy, such as car accidents</li><li>improved academic performance</li></ul></div><div><strong>What happens when you don't get enough sleep?</strong> Some of the <a href="https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/wellness-and-prevention/the-effects-of-sleep-deprivation" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">risks</a> associated with not getting enough sleep are: </div><div><ul><li>reduction in <a href="https://umbc.campuswell.com/sleep-debt/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">academic</a>, athletic, and social performance </li><li>increased risk for depression, anxiety, and irritability</li><li>increased risk of developing diabetes or cardiovascular disease</li><li>increased risk for catching a cold</li><li>increased risk for <a href="https://umbc.campuswell.com/link-between-sleep-and-metabolism/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">obesity</a></li></ul></div><div>One way you can improve your sleep is by improving your <a href="https://www.sleepfoundation.org/articles/sleep-environment" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">sleep environment. </a></div><div><ul><li><a href="https://umbc.campuswell.com/upgrade-your-sleep/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Designate your bed for sleep only</a> to signal to your body that when you are in bed, you should be sleeping. </li><li>Allow the space where you sleep to be as quiet and comfortable as possible when it is time to sleep.</li><li>Turn off all electronic devices at least one hour before it is time to sleep to limit exposure to bright light before bed.</li><li>Create a sleep schedule to consistently sleep and wake up at the same time.</li><li>Create a <a href="https://umbc.campuswell.com/bedtime-basics/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">wind-down routine</a>, which is a series of actions that signal to your body that you are preparing for sleep. </li><ul><li>Examples include taking a shower, brushing your teeth, and stopping the consumption of liquids.</li></ul></ul></div><div><a href="https://counseling.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Retriever Integrated Health</a> has staff available to assist students who may be experiencing problems related to sleep, but there are many apps that can help you wind down to prepare for sleep, such as</div><div><ul><li><a href="https://www.headspace.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Headspace </a></li><li><a href="https://www.calm.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Calm</a></li><li><a href="https://www.sleepcycle.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Sleep Cycle</a></li></ul></div></div>

<Title>Welcome Meghna Chandrasekaran, Musa Jafri, &amp; Katelyn Morgan</Title>

    <div class="html-content">On Friday, we welcomed three new members to our staff team: Meghna Chandrasekaran ’25, Political Engagement Intern; Musa Jafri ’24, Political Engagement Intern; and Katelyn Morgan ’23, Graphic Design Intern.<br><br>Meghna (she/her) is a Sondheim Public Affairs Scholar pursuing a B.S. in biological sciences with a minor in political science. She is avidly interested in politics and civic engagement. As a political engagement intern with the Center for Democracy and Civic Life, she wishes to foster a community in which students make meaningful contributions and everyone who is eligible votes. Meghna is a member of the Maryland Youth Advisory Council and the Maryland State director for Project Next Gen, a non-profit organization focusing on student advocacy. Outside of work and school, Meghna likes to visit new places, listen to music, and watch movies with friends and family.<br><br>Musa (he/they) is majoring in political science with minors in English and music. He has been involved in diversity, equity and inclusion work at UMBC with a focus on educational policy and pedagogical practices. As a political engagement intern with the Center for Democracy and Civic Life, he hopes to continue the Center’s work of building community through storytelling and dialogue. Musa also is an Alternative Spring Break (ASB) 2023 leader with the Center. In addition, he serves as president of the Political Science Council of Majors, co-chair of the University System of Maryland’s Student Civic Leaders Committee, and the director of civic engagement with the Student Government Association. In his free time, Musa likes playing Dungeons and Dragons, composing music, and playing his bassoon.<br><br>Katelyn (she/her) is majoring in graphic design with a minor in print media. As the graphic design intern with the Center for Democracy and Civic Life, Katelyn works to engage the community by communicating the Center’s programs and philosophy through clear and fun design. She hopes to uplift all aspects of the Center and grow the UMBC community into an even more welcoming place. Katelyn also works with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions as a Visual and Performing Arts Grit Guide. When not working or studying, she enjoys playing the banjo and watching films.<br><br>Please join the rest of the Center for Democracy and Civic Life team in welcoming Meghna, Musa, and Katelyn.<br></div>

<Title>New Student Online Alcohol and Other Drugs Courses</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) has partnered with 3rd Millennium to provide research-driven, evidence-based online courses to empower students to make healthy, well-informed decisions about issues that affect their college years and beyond.</span></p><p><span>As part of our comprehensive alcohol and drug prevention program for new incoming first year and/or transfer students, </span><span>UMBC requires that undergraduate students complete both Alcohol-Wise and Other Drugs and graduate students complete Other Drugs only.</span><span> </span></p><p><span>For each of the courses:</span></p><ul><li><span>Part 1 is due </span><span>August 15, 2022</span><span> and</span></li><li>Part 2 is due <span>October 24, 2022 [Alcohol-Wise ONLY]</span></li></ul><p><span>To access Alcohol-Wise For College:</span></p><ol><li><span>Sign in at </span><a href="https://my.umbc.edu/go/alcoholwise" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>https://my.umbc.edu/go/alcoholwise</span></a></li><li>You will be directed to the myUMBC login page where you will sign in with your UMBC username and password to be taken directly to the registration page for the Alcohol-Wise course.</li></ol><p><span>Passing Exam Score: 75%</span></p><p><span>To access Other Drugs:</span></p><ol><li><span>Sign in at </span><a href="https://my.umbc.edu/go/otherdrugsprevention" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>https://my.umbc.edu/go/otherdrugsprevention</span></a></li><li>You will be directed to the myUMBC login page where you will sign in with your UMBC username and password to be taken directly to the registration page for the Other Drugs course.</li></ol><p><span>Other Important Information:</span></p><ul><li><span>You will need Internet access and audio capabilities.</span></li><li>You may take the course(s) in multiple sittings.</li><li>The course(s) may include surveys to help personalize your experience and measure students' attitudes and behaviors.</li><li>To avoid technical issues, please use any major web browser released within the previous two years.</li><li>Should you experience any technical issues, including issues with course login, 3rd Millennium has technical support and can be accessed by emailing <span><a href="mailto:help@3rdmil.com">help@3rdmil.com</a></span><span> or clicking on the "Technical Support" link within the courses.</span></li><li>Should you experience login problems related to myUMBC, contact the DoIT Help Desk by visiting <a href="https://my.umbc.edu/go/request-help" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>https://my.umbc.edu/go/request-help</span></a><span> or call 410-455-3838.</span></li><li>If you have any additional questions or concerns about these courses, please email <span><a href="mailto:rih@umbc.edu">rih@umbc.edu</a></span><span>.</span> </li></ul></span></div>

<Title>Retriever Integrated Health Closed on Tuesday, August 9</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><div><div>Due to an ongoing issue with the HVAC unit that serves Retriever Integrated Health, the physical office will be closed on Tuesday, August 9, 2022.</div><div><br></div><div>Staff will continue to telework and provide telehealth where appropriate.  We will post updates on hours and availability for the remainder of the week on the <a href="https://health.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">RIH website</a>.</div><div><br></div><div>In case of an emergency,  please contact UMBC Police at 410-455-5555. </div><div><br></div><div>If you have questions please feel free to contact Dr. Bruce Herman, Director, Retriever Integrated Health, at 410-455-2215.</div></div></div></div>
