Hey Graduate Retrievers! We need your voice!
UMBC is participating in the National College Health Assessment. We want our health and wellbeing resources, events, and services to be tailored for our graduate students. In order to help us accomplish this, we need you to complete the National College Health Assessment.
ALL GRADUATE STUDENTS: Please check your email for the link to complete the assessment.
100 students to complete the NCHA will be randomly selected to receive $50 in Retriever Dollars.
Of all graduate students to complete the NCHA, two students will be selected to win either:

BreakingGround Applications Still Open
Low lift application! Apply soon!
The BreakingGround grant program still has funds to distribute between now and June 30! The BreakingGround initiative awards grants of up to $2,500.00 to UMBC faculty, staff, and students to implement educational and community-building courses and programs that foster civic agency: the capacity to initiate and make meaningful contributions to social change.
The options for using these funds are flexible, but some ideas include: experiential learning opportunities for students; student and community-engaged research projects; time to design deep transformations of existing curricula to be oriented toward civic agency; and resources for engagement with social changemakers and local communities. For a list of previous awardees, see here.
For more information and to apply, visit our website at this link. Proposals are accepted on a rolling basis, and when you apply, we will contact you within two weeks of submission. However, we strongly encourage you to submit before May 15.
The application is relatively short, with the main criteria being that the submissions should be clear about (a) how the proposed use of funds will contribute to enhanced civic knowledge and engagement for UMBC community members and (b) which administrative unit will hold the funds for the project. Civic Life Receives Outstanding Conference Submission Award
at AERA SIG 41 Conference
Center for Democracy and Civic Life staff received the Outstanding Conference Submission Award at the American Educational Research Association (AREA) SIG 41 Conference in April 2024. The co-authors of "Grounding Civic Education in Civic Life: An Evaluation of the STRiVE Program” are Ricky Blissett ‘11, associate director; Olivia Giuliano ‘24, evaluation and special projects intern; Tess McRae ‘22, coordinator for civic design; and David Hoffman, Ph.D. ‘13, director. They presented their paper during a conference roundtable discussion.
The Center’s study uses a narrative inquiry approach to evaluate the impact of its STRiVE leadership for public purpose program on the development of civic agency in UMBC undergraduate students. Initial findings identify several mechanisms for this effect including (but not limited to) reshaping people's ideas about social change leadership to be inclusive of more diverse strengths, fostering trust and value in community and human society, and developing capacities for understanding and articulating both their own and others' perspectives.
AERA, a national research society, strives to advance knowledge about education, to encourage scholarly inquiry related to education, and to promote the use of research to improve education and serve the public good. The Experiential Education and Community Engagement: Scholarship and Practice SIG is dedicated to bringing together both researchers and practitioners to build and promote understanding of experiential education and critical community engagement for the betterment of the field and the reform of K-16+ education.

Connectionary: How to make the most of the UMBC experience
Sessions starting next week!
The
Connectionary program series is hosted by the Center for Democracy and Civic
Life to encourage and foster opportunities for conversation about issues that
affect our lives here at UMBC. Facilitated by UMBC students in the ConnectionCorps
civic dialogue program, these conversations help UMBC community members think
about their own experiences and identify pathways to engagement, shared
understanding, and opportunities for building a thriving campus community.
These sessions will be organized as dialogues, where the aim is to come to some shared understandings about what challenges and opportunities exist on campus. These will not be information sessions; participants should expect to be engaged in conversation about the issues, rather than just getting information.

Affordability

cost of college is on many people’s minds and is especially a concern for
students who are navigating affordability on campus. What is there to be done
about it? How should we make sense of what is needed for a college experience
at UMBC to be affordable? What are the opportunities and challenges? Come join

to form professional relationships with staff and faculty, but not sure where
to start? Do you find it challenging to figure out how to have the right
conversations with people to form professional connections? Join us for a
dialogue about creating relationships between students and faculty and staff to
generate genuine relationships in the atmosphere of professional academia as
well as how to nurture it after first making a connection.

To Be Involved

Being involved on campus can be
challenging, especially when it comes to making choices about how you want to
be involved, how much, and with whom. This dialogue is focused on the
experience of being involved on campus. There are many different ways to get
involved on campus and within student organizations. The goal is for people to
come together and share experiences about involvement on campus. Come join in
conversation about what it means to be involved on campus in a way that is
healthy and fulfilling.

Research
Facilitator:

How
do you get involved in research opportunities on campus? How do you connect
with others around research? This dialogue is focused on staff and students
discussing their involvement with research on campus. The goal is for people
with similar field interests to come together and talk about how they got
involved with research, how to come up with research topics, or current
projects they are doing. Whether you are a research expert or just getting
started, this event can broaden the way we all think about research. Join us
for a conversation about research experiences at UMBC. Each session is tailored
for a different UMBC college (in parentheses below), but all are welcome at
each.

The Greater Catonsville Chamber of Commerce Government Relations Committee invites you to a Town Hall Meeting with local elected officials from Baltimore County Council District 1 and State Legislative Districts 44 A/B, along with representatives from Baltimore County government, to discuss issues of concern to local business owners and residents.
