<Title>Center for Democracy and Civic Life Staff Published in Leadership Exchange</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>Center for Democracy and Civic Life’s Director David Hoffman, Ph.D. '13, and Coordinator for Civic Design Tess McRae ’22, coauthored </span><span><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pbydcl4oV30tEOfLpEg285YByzcUk6EW/view" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">“Learning Opportunities Foster Civic Agency, Social Trust,”</a> </span><span>for the fall issue of </span><span><em>Leadership Exchange</em></span><span>. Dr. Hoffman and McRae share how the Center has created “learning opportunities through which students develop the confidence, skills, and clarity of perspective to cultivate social norms that foster civic agency and social trust, and to challenge and change norms that inhibit agency and trust. The learning opportunities focus on ‘civic life maxims’ – brief assertions illuminate taken-for-granted assumptions and behaviors that underlie civic life and point to alternative possibilities.” </span></p><p><span>The article also includes quotes from UMBC alumna Katie Brungard ‘24, and current student Christian Jassani, who explains, "Learning about these maxims has made me a stronger leader. I can better understand how my choices affect others. I now know how to convey messages in a more personable and effective way that makes change more likely." </span></p><p></p><p><span>NASPA’s </span><a href="https://www.naspa.org/book/leadership-exchange-magazine" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Leadership Exchange </span><span>magazine</span></a><span> helps prepare chief student affairs officers for the most complex management challenges in higher education today. <Title>Healing from Family Challenges Group</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>Healing from Family Challenges </span><span>is a
    six-week group that provides psychoeducation and skills that help address the effects
    of adverse childhood experiences. It helps the members to recognize how these
    past challenging experiences might be impacting their current functioning and
    helps individuals identify healthy ways of coping with their experiences.
    Students transition from surviving past experiences to thriving in the present.
    The group creates a safe and supportive environment to develop an alternate way
    of looking at the past and develop a sense of meaning and purpose that help
    them thrive today. </span></p><p><span>Wednesdays, 3:00 PM-4:30 PM beginning October 16</span></p><p><span>The first step to joining any group is to complete an Initial Consultation appointment. Please call us at 410-455-2542 or visit the RetrieverCare portal to schedule.</span></p><p><span>For general group questions, or if you need accommodations for a disability, please send a secure message to our Group Coordinator, Lauren Mirzakhalili, LCSW-C, via the <a href="https://myretrievercare.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">patient portal</a> at least one week prior to the start of group and RIH will arrange for services.</span></p><p><span>All RIH services are LGBTQIA2S+ friendly and are welcoming to all diverse populations.</span></p></div>

Retriever Integrated Health and the Career Center are partnering up to help students change the way they think about approaching the job market. In this workshop, students will learn about how to be efficient and strategic with their search, as well as how to persevere when things don't go as expected.     <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>It's that time of year again to protect yourself, your family and your community from current and upcoming infectious diseases!  </span><a href="https://www.safeway.com/vaccinations/group-clinic/UMBC24" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Sign up now</span></a><span> for this season's flu shot and the latest COVID-19 vaccine.  In addition, other vaccines against meningitis, RSV, shingles, tetanus and others will be available.  Options will be shown during the registration process.  Talk with your personal medical provider to see what is recommended for you.  Remember that a flu or COVID infection can significantly interrupt your studies, your work, and other important events in your life. <Title>Graduate Student Support Group</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span>Pursuing a graduate degree/Ph.D. can be one of the most challenging phases in an individual's academic career. The road to earning the diploma can be long and lonely. The Graduate Student support group is composed of graduate/Ph.D. students who want to come together to share the challenges and struggles of their academic experience. The group will focus on discussing ways to balance school &amp; personal life, relationships with advisers and peers, and how to deal with the stress and anxiety of academic pressures while defining and pursuing career goals.</span><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>This group meets virtually on Thursdays from 3 - 4:15 p.m. beginning September 26. </span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Due to licensure laws, all students must be located in the state of Maryland during the group to participate.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><p><span>The first step to joining any group is to complete an Initial Consultation appointment. Please call us at 410-455-2542 or visit the RetrieverCare portal to schedule.</span></p><p><span>For general group questions, or if you need accommodations for a disability, please send a secure message to our Group Coordinator, Lauren Mirzakhalili, LCSW-C, via the <a href="https://myretrievercare.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">patient portal</a> at least one week prior to the start of group and RIH will arrange for services.</span></p><p><span>All RIH services are LGBTQIA2S+ friendly and are welcoming to all diverse populations.</span></p></div></div>
