    <div class="html-content"><div>STRiVE 2025 took place from Monday, January 13 - Friday, January 17, 2025 at the Skycroft Conference Center in Middletown, MD. 47 UMBC undergraduate students spent five days strengthening their talents, learning to live by their values, and exploring how to deepen UMBC’s culture of mattering and belonging. The guests ("stakeholders") helped participants consider how they could contribute to addressing those issues in the semester(s) ahead. The stakeholders were:<br><ul><li><strong>Ciara Christian, M.A. ’18, Ph.D. ’22</strong> (Center for Social Justice Dialogue)</li><li><strong>Darcie Adams ’23</strong> (The Gathering Space for Spiritual Well-Being)</li><li><strong>Griselda Flores, Ph.D.</strong> (Retriever Essential Needs and Connections)</li><li><strong>John Fox, Ph.D.</strong> (Division of Student Affairs)</li><li><strong>Katie Bowen, LCSW-C</strong> (Retriever Integrated Health)</li><li><strong>Matt Hoffman, M.Div</strong> (The Gathering Space for Spiritual Well-Being)</li><li><strong>Ricky Blissett ’11, Ph.D.</strong> (Center for Democracy and Civic Life)</li></ul>Ciara Christian and Ricky Blissett visited STRiVE 2025 at other points during the week to co-facilitate sessions with some of the STRiVE 2025 coaches. <strong>James DeVita, Ph.D.</strong> (Division of Student Affairs) visited STRiVE to share some inspiration with the participants.<br><br>We are deeply grateful to everyone who served as coaches, stakeholders, and guests, as well as to <strong>Kelly Birch</strong>, <strong>Lan Le ’21</strong>, and the entire <strong>commonvision staff team</strong> for their flexibility, patience, and incredible support with the behind-the-scenes preparation for STRiVE.<br><br><a href="https://civiclife.umbc.edu/learning-engagement/strive/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">STRiVE</a> is hosted by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life with support from the Student Government Association and PNC Bank. <Title>Healing from Family Challenges Group</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>Healing from Family Challenges </span><span>is a
    six-week group that provides psychoeducation and skills that help address the effects
    of adverse childhood experiences. It helps the members to recognize how these
    past challenging experiences might be impacting their current functioning and
    helps individuals identify healthy ways of coping with their experiences.
    Students transition from surviving past experiences to thriving in the present.
    The group creates a safe and supportive environment to develop an alternate way
    of looking at the past and develop a sense of meaning and purpose that help
    them thrive today. </span></p><p><span>Wednesdays, 3:00 PM-4:30 PM beginning February 19</span></p><p><span>The first step to joining any group is to complete an Initial Consultation appointment.     <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>Dr. Griselda Flores, </span><a href="https://studentaffairs.umbc.edu/student-support/retriever-support-services/retriever-essentials-and-connections/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>director of Retriever Essential Needs and Connections</span></a><span> in the </span><a href="https://studentaffairs.umbc.edu/student-support/dean-of-students/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Dean of Students office</span></a><span>, recently participated in </span><a href="https://www.naspa.org/events/naspa-alice-manicur-symposium1" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>NASPA’s Alice Manicur Symposium</span></a><span>. The symposium is an engaging and supportive environment for student affairs professionals who identify as women or outside the gender binary and who are emerging senior- and senior-level professionals. Participants were selected through an application process.</span></p><p><span>In addition to in-depth discussions and small, faculty-led mentor group sessions, attendees met one-on-one with experienced VPSA faculty members and participated in content sessions on topics such as: strategic thinking, leading change, planning for career advancement, and personal and professional life balance.</span></p><p><span>"My experience at the Alice Manicur Symposium was genuinely transformative,” said Dr. Flores. “I gained as much insight from my fellow cohort group as I did from the esteemed faculty who presented on the critical aspects of what it takes to ascend to a VP role. The discussions on strategic partnership, change leadership, and other essential topics offered a profound opportunity to explore our unique paths to leadership. I left the symposium equipped with key skills and practical tips for navigating senior leadership roles in higher education.     <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>Center for Democracy and Civic Life Director David Hoffman, Ph.D. ’13, is serving on one of six new </span><a href="https://imaginingamerica.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Imagining America</span></a><span> (IA) regional </span><a href="https://imaginingamerica.org/ia-announces-six-new-collaboratories-launching-in-2025/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Collaboratories</span></a><span>. Collaboratories connect members across the IA consortium in the production of public knowledge and collective imagination through collaborative research and experimentation.</span></p><p><span>The B-More with Imagination Collaboratory will expand an ongoing IA Community of Practice at Towson University to the wider Baltimore region. It brings together members of higher education institutions and community organizations to imagine and enact an inter-institutional, place-based approach to work toward equity and justice. Dr. Hoffman and Dr. Michael Casiano, assistant professor of American Studies, are representing UMBC. Yet, maintaining wellness within graduate programs can often be challenging. The Graduate Student Support Group is a space for students to connect, share, and grow alongside others. This group will serve as a space to celebrate your strengths, resilience, and creativity while exploring strategies to thrive both academically and personally. Together, we’ll focus on finding a balance between school and personal life, navigating relationships with advisors and peers, and managing stress and academic pressure, all while staying grounded in your values and career goals.     <div class="html-content"><span>Skills Training in the Application of Interpersonal Regulation (STAIR) </span><span>helps students who struggle with relationship dynamics and emotion regulation. High-stress experiences overwhelm the emotional system, creating both emotional chaos and numbing, undermining our ability to think and act effectively, and disturbing our sense of self and relationships. The skills training and practice introduced in this program are designed to help you leave behind old patterns and develop new interpersonal behaviors and emotion management skills more consistent with your current life goals. </span><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>STAIR Group will run 3 times during Spring 2025, all rounds will be in-person.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Round 1: Tuesdays from 1:30 - 3 p.m. beginning February 11</span></div><div><span>Round 2: Wednesdays from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. beginning March 5</span></div><div><span>Round 3: Fridays from 1:30 - 3 p.m. beginning March 28</span></div><div><br></div><div><span><p><span>The first step to joining any group is to complete an Initial Consultation appointment. As we are in a new semester, please check out our hours below.</div><div><br></div><div><ul><li><strong>Mondays:</strong> 8 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.</li><li><strong>Tuesdays:</strong> 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. </li><li><strong>Wednesdays: </strong>8:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. </li><li><strong>Thursdays:</strong> 8:00 a.m.- 10:00 p.m. </li><li><strong>Fridays:</strong> 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.</li><li><strong>Saturdays:</strong> Closed</li><li><strong>Sunday: </strong>12 p.m. - 10 p.m.</li></ul></div><div><strong>These hours will begin on Sunday, January 26, 2025 and will end on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.
