Dr. James DeVita, AVP, Academic Partnerships and High-Impact Experiences, to Co-Present at AAC&U’s ISSOTL Conference

Dr. James DeVita, assistant vice president for academic partnerships and high-impact experiences, will co-present at the American Association of Colleges and Universities' International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, Inc. (ISSOTL) annual conference in Christchurch, New Zealand this November in partnership with the University of Canterbury. Dr. DeVita will co-present "Large-Scale Assessment as SoTL: An Emerging Structure that Supports Data-Driven Practices in Higher Education" with Dr. Megan Bolden, University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and Dr. Kristi Wiley, Lenoir Community College.

During their session, they will "explore how the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) has evolved from reflective practice to a systematic, research-based approach to improving student learning. We argue that more emphasis should be placed on applying SoTL principles to large-scale assessment initiatives across institutions. Drawing from examples like the National Survey of Student Leaders and Queen's University Assessment Redesign Project, we showcase how SoTL frameworks can drive institutional change. We will present large-scale assessments that have led to meaningful reforms in undergraduate social work programs, multi-institutional research initiatives, and campus-wide career-readiness outcome mapping."

ISSOTL serves faculty members, staff, and students who care about teaching and learning as serious intellectual work. Through building intellectual and collaborative infrastructure, the Society supports the associational life that fosters scholarly work about teaching and learning. The Society provides this support by:

recognizing and encouraging scholarly work on teaching and learning in each discipline, within scholarly societies and across educational levels,

promoting cross-disciplinary conversations to create synergy and prompt new lines of inquiry,

facilitating the collaboration of scholars in different countries and the flow of new findings and applications across national boundaries,

encouraging the integration of discovery, learning, and public engagement, and

advocating for support, review, recognition, and appropriate uses of the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Together, we will explore the intersections of faith and culture, building the skills to create communities where all beliefs are respected and valued.

A mix of in-person and virtual sessions will be provided this semester.

RSVP here: https://umbc.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_09DlqMyjcC3YlBI

Session Descriptions

Critical Religious Pluralism (series keynote): Join Dr. Jenny Small in a dialogue about critical religious pluralism, which challenges surface-level notions of tolerance and instead calls for a deeper engagement with the systemic inequities embedded in religious life on college campuses. This includes help navigating their educational benefits, access to mental health resources, professional development such as resume workshops and connections to on-campus job opportunities, and dedicated events, spaces, and student organizations that offer a sense of community.

As part of these efforts, UMBC opened a Veterans Lounge in fall 2024, where veteran students can relax and connect with each other. Each year, UMBC also hosts Veterans Week, a tradition that honors the service and contributions of veteran students and staff with a variety of fun and educational events.

"Supporting our veteran population is not only a responsibility, but also a privilege," Walker says. "Our veteran and military-affiliated student population bring unique perspectives, experiences, and strengths to our campus community. Their dedication, resilience, and leadership not only enrich the university as a whole, but also inspire us to continually enhance the ways in which we support them."

Read more about UMBC's national rankings recognition.

-Catherine Meyers

apply for a $500 scholarship to support storytelling research and
praxis. The deadline to submit for the 2025-2026 academic year is Friday, October 17th; scholarship
recipients will be contacted if further information about their project
is requested and final scholarship decisions will be made by November
    15th.

The Public Stories Lab engages and supports a broad variety of public
storytelling research and praxis. We encourage applications from
students across UMBC colleges (COEIT, CNMS, CAHSS, Social Work, Erickson
School) and campuses (UMBC Catonsville, Shady Grove). Projects might
include digital storytelling, podcasting, story mapping, oral histories,
immersive storytelling, public storytelling performances, oral storytelling traditions, visual storytelling (animation, comics, zines), data stories, and more!

Scholarship
recipients will be expected to attend one mentoring session with PSL
mentors and other scholarship recipients and share their storytelling
project (finished or in progress) at the PSL Storytelling Mini-Fest at
the end of the Spring 2026 semester. The Public Stories
Lab (PSL) is a collaborative and innovative hub for faculty, students,
and staff to co-construct knowledge and to bring relationships and stories to the center of research and pedagogy; proposals for this scholarship should align with the mission of the PSL.

If you have any questions before you submit, please email Charlotte Keniston (ckenist1@umbc.edu), or Sarah Jewett (sjewett@umbc.edu).
