<Title>Thrive On: Is What&#8217;s On Your Plate Nourishing You?</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><strong><p>On Monday, February 2, we will host <strong>Dinner with Friends</strong>, an engaging, facilitated conversation that will connect you with other members of the UMBC community. </p><br><p>Our conversations will be focused on two interrelated questions:</p><ol><li><p>"How do you live your values in community?"</p></li><li><p>"How do you live a life that sustains you?"</p></li></ol><br><p>We will explore challenges with thriving, share resources to support thriving, and generate ideas about how we, as a UMBC community, can improve thriving on campus.</p><br><p>This program, as a part of <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/welcomeweek" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Winter Welcome Retrievers</a>, will take place on <strong>February 2, 2026 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.</strong> in the University Center, UC 312. <Title>2026 USM BOR Student Excellence Scholarships Portal is Now Open</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>The Board of Regents and the University System of Maryland Student Council (USMSC) introduced the annual <a href="https://www.usmd.edu/regents/student_excellence_scholarship/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Board of Regents Student Excellence Scholarships</a> to recognize exceptionally talented students who are making contributions in various aspects of student life. Applications and letters of recommendation are now available, and are due Friday, February 6.</p><p>Undergraduate and graduate students have the opportunity to nominate themselves for this scholarship. <a href="https://www.usmd.edu/regents/student_excellence_scholarship/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">All details, including eligibility and application information, can be found on the scholarship website</a>.</p><p>Please share with students now to ensure they have the opportunity and time to apply. Whether you struggle to start a conversation or find it hard to step away from toxic relationships, you aren’t alone. Our group helps you practice the art of relating to others in a low-pressure environment. Through the shared experiences of your peers, you’ll gain the tools to understand social cues and build your social pack here at UMBC.</span><br><div><span><br></span><div><span>Group meets in-person on Wednesdays from 3 - 4:30 p.m. beginning February 25.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><p><span>The first step to joining any group is to complete an Initial Consultation appointment.      Wednesday nights, 4:30 - 7:00pm, 1/28/26 - 2/25/26 at the Lion Brothers
     Building classroom in Southwest Baltimore City (on the UMBC shuttle 
    route).</div><div><strong>Course Description</strong>: This
     course will guide students through the steps of program development and
     implementation that reflects community culture and priorities. "Events 
    and Programming as Inclusive Process" seeks to help students develop 
    programming which connects multiple communities through shared 
    activities and spaces, and addresses the importance of creating programs
     and events which respond to community needs, feedback, and assets. The 
    course will equip students with an understanding of the concept of 
    inclusive programming and the value of community engagement to create 
    sustainable community programs and events.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>CLDR 410-02, Asset Based Community Development</strong> with Jess Wyatt (UMBC Alumni Relations and Asset-Based Community Development Institute)</div><div><strong>When/Where</strong>: Wednesday
     nights, 4:30 - 7:00pm, 3/4/26 - 4/8/26 at the Lion Brothers Building 
    classroom in Southwest Baltimore City (on the UMBC shuttle route).</div><div><strong>Course Description</strong>: This
     course will address the fundamentals of Asset Based Community 
    Development (ABCD), how to practically implement ABCD in students' daily
     professional practice while developing a community of practice using 
    ABCD, as well as, becoming ABCD practitioners in the field. Working 
    through an ABCD process, participants can move towards whole-community 
    mobilization through mapping the capacities assets of individuals, 
    associations, and institutions while building relationships.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>CLDR 410-03, Budgeting for Community Impact</strong> with Candace Chance (Baltimore Nonprofit Strategist and Director of the Vision, Performance &amp; Impact Firm)</div><div><div><strong>When/Where</strong>: Wednesday
     nights, 4:30 - 7:00pm, 4/15/26 - 513/26 at the Lion Brothers Building 
    classroom in Southwest Baltimore City (on the UMBC shuttle route).</div><div><strong>Course Description</strong>: Have
     you heard the saying, Put your money where your mouth is? If not, it is
     a saying that means to follow through on something you said. 
    Organizations say a lot through their marketing, their grant proposals, 
    and ultimately through their vision, mission, and values. But there's 
    one major way to see if they're really walking the walk or just talking:
     their BUDGET! An organization's budget is their accountability to the 
    things that they say. This course will teach students how to align their
     values and their intended impact with their budgets so that they can

Yet, maintaining wellness within graduate programs can often be challenging. The Graduate Student Support Group is a space for students to connect, share, and grow alongside others. This group will serve as a space to celebrate your strengths, resilience, and creativity while exploring strategies to thrive both academically and personally. Together, we'll focus on finding a balance between school and personal life, navigating relationships with advisors and peers, and managing stress and academic pressure, all while staying grounded in your values and career goals.     six-week group that provides psychoeducation and skills that help address the effects
    of adverse childhood experiences. It helps the members to recognize how these
    past challenging experiences might be impacting their current functioning and
    helps individuals identify healthy ways of coping with their experiences.
    Students transition from surviving past experiences to thriving in the present.
    The group creates a safe and supportive environment to develop an alternate way
    of looking at the past and develop a sense of meaning and purpose that help
    them thrive today. </span></p><p><span>Group meets in-person on Thursdays, 3:00 PM-4:30 PM beginning March 5</span></p><p><span>The first step to joining any group is to complete an Initial Consultation appointment. <Title>STAIR: Climbing Toward Calm and Connection</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span>Skills Training in the Application of Interpersonal Regulation (STAIR) </span><span>helps students who struggle with relationship dynamics and emotion regulation. High-stress experiences overwhelm the emotional system, creating both emotional chaos and numbing, undermining our ability to think and act effectively, and disturbing our sense of self and relationships. <Title>Apply for Alternative Spring Break (ASB) 2026 (due TONIGHT at 11:59 p.m.)</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a five-day immersive learning experience for UMBC undergraduate and graduate students to explore the systemic and human dimensions of complex social issues in Baltimore. Participants will spend much of the week in Baltimore City connecting with local leaders, policymakers, organizations, and community members, to gain a nuanced understanding of the resources and challenges related to their topic areas. The program supports students in linking their knowledge and interests to local contexts, and in identifying pathways for long-term community engagement.</p><p>This year's ASB program will take place from <strong>Monday, March 16 to Friday, March 20, 2026</strong>. Participants spend much of the week in small groups, each co-led by UMBC students trained by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life, exploring a specific topic in depth. </p><p>This year's focus areas are:</p><ul><li><strong>Housing Equity and Access</strong></li><li><strong>Justice in Psychiatric Care</strong></li><li><strong>Fostering LGBT+ Belonging in Schools</strong></li></ul><p><strong>Complete the <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSceG3UWUXj91hVndE0SntRal4KkrD8ZakqaAc5Z1j8JVVOtvQ/viewform" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">ASB 2026 application</a> by TONIGHT at 11:59 p.m. EST. </strong>Accepted and waitlisted applicants will be notified via email in late January.</p><p>ASB is hosted by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life.     <div class="html-content"><div><br></div><div>The Office of Health Promotion will be <strong>closed Wednesday, December 24th, through Thursday, January 1st, </strong>for Winter Break.</div><div><br></div><div>OHP will also be <strong>closed on Friday, January 2nd,</strong> for staff development. If needed, we are available virtually.</div><div><br></div><div>During Winter Break, our office will be open on <strong>Wednesdays (January 7th, 14th, 21st) </strong>from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. </div><div><br></div><div>During the times we are closed, staff will be available virtually if you have any needs.
