UMBC Arts and Culture Communications Internship (PAID)
The Office of Institutional Advancement at UMBC seeks a part-time paid Arts and Culture Communications Intern who
will take an active role in the promotions of arts and cultural events
for the university, alongside other staff who will also serve as
mentors.UMBC
presents more than 150 events annually in the arts, humanities and
social sciences, including performances, exhibitions, and lectures. The
primary focus of the position is promoting these events through updates
to campus-based and community partner websites; as well as assisting in
the strategic planning and execution of social media messaging and media
pitches to promote these events and the event and achievement news of
students, faculty and alumni. For the interested intern, writing editorial stories for UMBC News and/or UMBC Magazine is also an option.The
successful candidate will possess excellent written and verbal
communications skills; excellent organizational and time management
skills; and be comfortable working both independently and
collaboratively. A background or major in the arts, humanities or media
and communications studies is preferred.Through this internship, an ideal candidate will hone their writing skills and learn best practices in promotions messaging.The
position is open to undergraduate students enrolled at UMBC, to work up
to a maximum of 20 hours per week. The rate of pay is $11/hourly. Work
location is in PAHB on an iMac and scheduling is to be determined with

Work as a PAID Videographer at The Retriever
The Retriever is looking for videographers passionate about journalism and media production to work our new videography department for the 2018-19 academic year.Duties include:
- Shoot, cull, cut and edit footage
- Report to necessary locations and capture relevant footage
- Work both individually and in a team environment to create timely, relevant videos.
Applicants must be in good academic standing and attend weekly meetings. Additionally, applicants are required to have their own equipment and must have past experience with videography or photography as well as a general understanding of the Adobe suite and video editing software.
Visual Arts and Media Communication majors are preferred, but all majors may apply.

A Brief Design History
Version 1.0, The Kraken Upcycle, won the Grand Prize at the Baltimore Kinetic Sculpture Race in 2015, qualifying the team to race in the national race in California.
Version 2.0, The Kraken Upcycle, partnered with Zipcar in 2016 to upcycle their operator manuals into a beautiful sail and bribes. Kraken 2.0 won the “Golden Flipper Award” in Lowell MA for best water entry.
Version 3.0, Kraken Calamari, was a redesign based on this year’s “food” theme, including a checkered tablecloth, a kraken ketchup bottle, and giant onion rings. Kraken 3.0 won “Best Design based on this year’s theme” aka The Wiener Award (the 2017 race was called “The Best of the Wurst).”
Version 4.0 will build a new kinetic sculpture from upcycled components that could withstand the rigors of the Baltimore Race AND Kinetic Grand Championship.

SGA seeking design, photo and video coordinator

My name is Vrinda Deshpande, and I am the Executive
Vice President of the Student Government Association (SGA) for the
upcoming 2018-19 academic year.
For this upcoming year, we currently have several positions in our Executive Branch that are open for applicants until August 17th.
The positions that are particularly relevant to Visual Arts are the
Coordinator of Photography and Videography, and the Coordinator of
Graphic Design.
Both positions receive
stipends, and are a fantastic way to connect SGA with UMBC’s arts
community (which is a connection that has been severely lacking in the
past).

VISUAL ARTS SENIOR EXHIBITION
Opening Reception: Tues May 22 @ 5PM
This year the
2018 Visual Arts Senior Exhibition is from May 22 to June 8, 2018, with the opening reception on Tuesday, May 22 from 5 to 7 pm.
Awards will be announced at 6 pm. Admission to the exhibition is free and open to the public.
The Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located in the Fine Arts Building. For more information call 410-455-3188.
