Teaching Fellows for Maryland Scholarship-Due October 11th

<Tagline>The 2019-2020 application cycle is now open.</Tagline>

state has agreed to pick up the tab for a college education for
students who qualify, but the offer comes with strings attached.

Wednesday
marked the first day to apply for the Teaching Fellows of Maryland
scholarship, which has $2 million set aside for residents who will
    commit to becoming teachers.

The
goal is to help current students become teachers as a way of responding
to a growing shortage of educators in the classroom. James Fielder Jr.,
secretary of the Maryland Higher Education Commission, said the
scholarship is one of a kind.

"It's
key in the fact that it's the first one that's been established
exclusively for teachers to increase the number of teachers in the
    state," Fielder said.

For
those who qualify, the new teaching scholarship will pay 100% of
tuition, fees, room and board. In return, after graduation, recipients
must agree to teach in a Maryland public school where at least 50% of
the students receive free or reduced-price meals.

It
didn't take long for word of the teaching scholarship to get around the
campus and in the hallways of Towson University's College of Education.

"I
wish it would have been earlier, but it has presented itself now. I
definitely will be applying," Towson student Goodness Nwaneri said.

Maryland students from high school seniors to graduate school students can apply for the scholarship.

"We
work and we go to school, so many of us are always trying to get more
money so that we can continue our education. So, I can imagine it will
be a very popular scholarship," Towson student Kaitlynn Gooding said.

Laurie Mullen, the dean of Towson's College of Education, said there has been a quick response to the teacher scholarship.

"Already
in my office, we've had phone calls, we've had students stop and they
walk in with their papers and saying, 'Is this for real?' So we've had a
     lot of excitement," Mullen said.

Maryland Higher Education Commission officials said the deadline for scholarship applications is Oct. 11.
That means there's a very short window to apply. Anyone interested can see the application and requirements here.

PATERNAL RITES fully transcends the world of documentary ... Gorgeously crafted and emotionally devastating ... A breathtaking experience that finds a level of intimacy few films are ever willing to ... simply a film unlike any you’ve ever seen before.”— Criterion

Paternal Rites is a first-person essay film that examines the secret underbelly of a contemporary Jewish American family as they grapple with the aftereffects of physical and sexual abuse on their present-day lives. It is also a groundbreaking film about the nature of trauma and memory itself: the ways in which trauma encrypts in uncanny ways; the function of speech and narrative in the process of decryption; and the role of film and filmmaking in the practice of healing. Paternal Rites draws inspiration from podcasts like This American Life and Radiolab and the long lineage of LGBT essay filmmakers in the U.S. such as Jenni Olson, Marlon Riggs, and Richard Fung.

Dan Bailey - Lecture - Today at 12 noon

<Tagline>Spectrum: Visual Arts Faculty Lecture Series</Tagline>

Dan Bailey’s films and animations have received numerous national and international awards and have been included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, France. His work has been screened at the Kennedy Center, Whitney Museum, and Museum of Modern Art, and has been broadcast on HBO and PBS. He directed 18 minutes of animation for the Minnesota Orchestra’s award-winning pilot video <em>On the Day You Were Born</em> and collaborated with MIT Researcher, Kent Larson, on a virtual documentary of Louis Kahn’s as-yet-unbuilt Hurva Synagogue.

His recent work in real-time interactive visualizations includes a Digital 3D puppet of George W. Bush, a visualization of Henri Matisse’s sculpture process, and a virtual tour of the Cone sisters’ collection of early 20th century art. He is currently working on a major research project of visualizing Washington, D.C. just before the British destroyed much of the city during the War of 1812. A pilot of this research was exhibited at the Walters Art Museum in spring 2008, and an upcoming PBS documentary on Benjamin Henry Latrobe will include major aspects of the work.

All lectures are free and open to the public and are held in the CADVC gallery space.
