Cook’s latest project took her to the largest migration locations for Sandhill Cranes and Whooping Cranes to create the Cranes in Motion project. In 2012 and 2014 she received research grants from UMBC and the Imaging Research Center to develop and produce this multi-media collection of works. Cranes in Motion aims to promote public interest, awareness, and appreciation of crane culture through a multifaceted portrayal of the natural history of this species and to allow the viewer to understand their human relationship to these extraordinary birds and our shared ecosystems.

Cook has exhibited her award-winning work nationally and internationally in both solo and group shows including screenings at MOMA and the Whitney Museum. In addition, Cook is the recipient of multiple national grants and fellowships including the Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, New York State Council on the Arts, Jerome Foundation, and the Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artists Award.

All Lectures are free and open to the public and are held in the CADVC gallery space

Jules Rosskam's "Paternal Rites" Screens Wednesday, 9/25

A breathtaking experience that finds a level of intimacy few films are ever willing to ... simply a film unlike any you’ve ever seen before.”— Criterion

Paternal Rites is a first-person essay film that examines the secret underbelly of a contemporary Jewish American family as they grapple with the aftereffects of physical and sexual abuse on their present-day lives. It is also a groundbreaking film about the nature of trauma and memory itself: the ways in which trauma encrypts in uncanny ways; the function of speech and narrative in the process of decryption; and the role of film and filmmaking in the practice of healing. Paternal Rites draws inspiration from podcasts like This American Life and Radiolab and the long lineage of LGBT essay filmmakers in the U.S. such as Jenni Olson, Marlon Riggs, and Richard Fung.

Cathy Cook has been creating films, videos, poetry films,
animation, collages and installations since the early 1980’s. Cook’s latest
project took her to the largest migration locations for Sandhill Cranes and
Whooping Cranes to create the Cranes in Motion project. In 2012 and 2014 she
received research grants from UMBC and the Imaging Research Center to develop
and produce this multi-media collection of works. Cranes in Motion aims to
promote public interest, awareness, and appreciation of crane culture through a
multifaceted portrayal of the natural history of this species and to allow the
viewer to understand their human relationship to these extraordinary birds and
    our shared ecosystems.

Cook has exhibited her award-winning work nationally and
internationally in both solo and group shows including screenings at MOMA and
the Whitney Museum. In addition, Cook is the recipient of multiple national
grants and fellowships including the Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, New York
State Council on the Arts, Jerome Foundation, and the Maryland State Arts
    Council Individual Artists Award.

All Lectures are free and open to the public and are held in the CADVC gallery
    space.
