Spring 2020 Undergraduate Student – Pass Grading Option

DEADLINE JUNE 10, 2020

After reviewing final course grades, students currently enrolled in a course under the regular grading method (A, B, C, D, or F) may request to have their final grade changed from an A, B, C, or D to a Pass (P) grade by submitting a request to the Registrar’s Office. 

Students are strongly encouraged to wait until after spring 2020 final course grades are posted before submitting a request. Students are also strongly encouraged to meet with an academic advisor before submitting a request to the Registrar’s Office to discuss the possible implications of (P) grading to determine if it is truly the best option. In particular, students should discuss the following implications with an academic advisor:

• Pre-requisites Implications
  • In cases where an academic department will allow Pass (P) grades to satisfy pre-requisite requirements, students will be required to contact the academic department to obtain a pre-requisite override in order to enroll in the subsequent course.
• Major/Minor/Certificate Eligibility
  • In cases where departments are allowing (P) grades to satisfy major, minor or certificate requirements, degree audits will automatically be updated to show that the requirement has been satisfied.

• General Education and Writing Intensive Requirements

• • In cases where a General Education course or Writing Intensive course also satisfies a major, minor, or certificate requirement, students must confer with their academic advisor in the academic department to discuss this option. It is the discretion of the academic department to determine if a (P) grade in a General Education course or Writing Intensive course will also be accepted for purposes of the major, minor, or certificate requirements.

For additional information regarding the applicability of Pass (P) grades for purposes of major, minor and certificate requirements as well as for pre-requisite requirements, please review the following college level decisions:

• College of Engineering and Information Technology
• College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences
• College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences
• Erickson School of Aging Studies – Pass (P) grades will be accepted for major and minor requirements as well as prerequisites
• School of Social Work – The Social Work Program is not accepting Pass (P) grades for any core/required courses, with the exception of the field placement which is always graded using the Pass/Fail grading method. The Pass (P) grade can be used to fulfill prerequisites.
• Individualized Study – Pass (P) grades will be accepted for major requirements and prerequisites
• Honors College – Consistent with UMBC’s Undergraduate Grading Method Options for Spring 2020, students enrolled in HONR 200 or HONR 300 seminars may choose to receive a P/F grade instead of a letter grade; and, if they do so, a P grade will satisfy the requirement that an Honors Seminar must be passed with a B grade or better to count towards the Certificate of General Honors.

OPEN-Visual Arts Summer Courses

We are hopeful each of you continue to remain safe and healthy during the unprecedented times.  These are unusual circumstances we all find ourselves in, and much like you, we continue to learn about our new realities daily; however, during all of this, our top priority is to continue to serve your needs.

We are aware that many of you have personal belongings in the academic buildings that you would like to retrieve. The colleges are working together to explore ways to help this happen safely and efficiently while maintaining social distancing standards. This is a multilayered process that will not be able to begin until UMBC is prepared to provide appropriate coordination of access and sanitation around campus; these coordination efforts will include members of the UMBC Police, college and university building managers, and Environmental Safety and Health.  Keeping that in mind we want to be proactive in our planning so we are able to initiate the process as soon as we are given the go ahead from the Governor and campus officials.

The first step in our process requires your input so we can plan appropriately based on your needs. If you have items in departmental areas, offices, or labs that you would like to retrieve prior to classes being back on campus please complete this Google Form. We will use the information you provide to develop an access timeline that can be implemented at a later date. As this timeline is finalized we will be in touch to schedule your access time.  We are also exploring alternative methods for returning your belongings, which are included in the questionnaire.

Please be sure to only complete this form if you have items needing to be retrieved.  We will be reviewing your responses on Friday May 22; we would appreciate getting your response by the end of Thursday May 21 in order to best plan for your eventual access. Please remember that you should not be on campus until you have a time slot confirmed, regardless on what the current state directives are.
