User Study of an Augmented Reality

A group of researchers from Information Technology, Human Centered Computing, and Visual Arts invite you to participate in a user study of an augmented reality mobile application called Losing Winter. Our primary goal is to understand users' experiences with the application and to explore future design opportunities. The Losing Winter AR application presents people's memories about the season of winter, exploring the cultural ramifications of changing weather patterns due to climate change.Each interview will be conducted in UMBC IRC User Studies Lab in ITE. You will receive $10 for your participation as Retriever Dollars accessible through your campus ID. Dear Undergraduate Artists,
We are delighted to announce that the Harvard Undergraduate Classics Journal, Persephone, is now accepting both written and artistic submissions for its upcoming spring issue until December 31st! We warmly invite you to apply. Please consider submitting a variety of works including, but not limited to, paintings, drawings, collages, photographs, sculpture, and digital art. All submissions must relate to the field of Classics in some way (for example, artwork featuring Greek or Roman mythology/history/culture, etc.). We also invite you to submit written submissions inspired by the discipline, such as creative pieces, original poems, scholarly essays, translations, original Greek or Latin compositions, and other genres. Please visit our website if you wish to peruse previous issues for further inspiration, or if you’d like to learn more about submission requirements.
We will confirm submission upon receipt and select pieces for publication by late January. Our editors will then work with accepted applicants to finalize drafts, with publication set for early May. Please note that the upcoming issue will be a double issue, featuring accepted submissions from both the past 2022 cycle and the upcoming 2023 cycle.

This course invites an interdisciplinary group of students throughout the UMBC campus, including Visual Art students, animators, designers, information systems students, and students working in music technology, computer programming, and digital humanities, who will work in a project-based collaborative environment. The Rap Research Lab will introduce students to the processes of creative technology, data visualization and multimedia production in a professional work environment. Students work under the guidance of the Rap Research Lab director, usually in teams, on client-based or research projects. The focus of the course is on the development of ideas, utilizing evolving technologies. Rap Research Lab productions demand a diversity of skills from students. This opportunity is an upper-level course welcoming applications from students with a wide range of experience from ideation to production as well as skills including: spatial design,

Writing By and For Artists, Curators & Critics Critics
How do artists engage in the practice of writing about their own and others' artwork? What are the conventions curators follow in formulating theses statements for art exhibitions and in writing labels for the art objects on display in a show or a museum? What is entailed in producing an effective piece of art criticism? Students in this seminar grapple with these questions on a practical level by reading published works by artists, curators and critics, and by carrying out a range of weekly writing exercises. On a more philosophical level, the goal of the course is to become so comfortable with writing about art that to do so becomes more of a matter of desire than duress. The course will be conducted as a small seminar with weekly discussions and written assignments. Note: individual goals may be established with the instructor.

Advanced 3D Animation
This course will continue a student's exploration of 3-D computer animation. Advanced techniques for modeling and procedural rendering will be introduced, as well as animation techniques that utilize scripts, expressions, deformations and inverse kinematics. Students will utilize these skills in the context of strengthening their own artistic voice.
