Join us for a night of community, artwork, and cultural performances! </strong><div><strong><br><p><strong>"From the Madness"</strong> is a group exhibition by UMBC students that reflects on our environments by celebrating culture, as both a refuge and resistance. Inspired by The Sugar Shack (1976), this exhibition considers how shared traditions, movement, sound, and ritual become sites of unity and survival amid chaos.</p><br><p>Culture is our breathwork.  It lives in our bodies, our movement, our language, and the quiet rhythms of our everyday lives. It connects us to our histories and to one another. Be unapologetic, bold, vibrant in your art. We want you to showcase what makes you and your communities special. </p><br><p>"<strong>From the Madness"</strong> resists isolation and insists on wholeness. This exhibition is an act of gathering: a refusal of division, and an affirmation that culture itself is not only an escape from the madness, but a way through it.</p><br><p>Culture is resistance.     Every semester, ABA hosts a large Art Symposium &amp; Exhibition to spotlight and celebrate the variety of black artists on campus. This semester's event will be taking place on April 27th. Please share this opportunity widely! To help with the process email us the following to: <a href="mailto:commonvision@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">commonvision@umbc.edu</a>:</p><ul><li>Your file</li><ul><li>If it's a Google doc be sure permissions are set to be viewed by everyone</li></ul><li><p>How many copies you would like</p></li><li>Single or double sided (if applicable)</li><li>Color or black &amp; white</li><li>Paper type, we have a couple of options:</li><ul><li>Our standard paper for color or b&amp;w</li><li>Resume paper (an additional .30 per sheet)</li><li>If you would like to decide this in person after seeing the paper that is fine</li></ul></ul><br><p><em>Please note that we will only print these once you come into our office. We will treat these emails as walk-ins and won't have them printed ahead of time.</em></p><br><p><strong>We only accept Retriever Dollars as payment.</strong> You can put cash on your card at the CIC (Commons Information Center) desk in the Lobby of The Commons or put money on your campus card via myUMBC </p><br><p>Alternatively, you can use the <a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/post/53720/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">mobile print kiosks</a> to print. <a href="https://umbc.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/faq/pages/30744009/Pharos+Mobile+Printing" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Instructions on how to use the kiosks </a>may be of help. A few notes about the kiosk:</p><ul><li>The printers can only print in black and white</li><li>8.5 x 11" (letter size) is the only size it prints - any other size will cause the printer to lock up/not print so be sure to check your settings.</li></ul><p>Be sure to give yourself enough time to have your prints completed, we will do our best to assist you in a timely manner. <strong>There will be lines and wait times the day before and the day of the Career Fair - consider printing early!</strong></p></div>

Would you like your voice heard, or would appreciate having student perspectives brought to the forefront of these conversations relating to AI policy and guidelines? </p><br><p>The AOK Library would like to hear from you! If you would like to come together in a safe space to discuss AI use on campus, please stop by room 259 in the Library for two student only, student focused, in-person listening sessions happening soon (please see dates and times below and in our events page). Faculty will not be present, and conversations that occur within the space will remain anonymous to protect students' identities. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is offering an opportunity for student entrepreneurs called the UMBC EntrepreneurShop.</p><p><strong>This spring they will be providing an opportunity for students to showcase and/or sell their goods or services in the Commons for FREE!</strong></p><p>This is a great opportunity to gain some entrepreneurial experience and to use the space to survey students about your ideas and get feedback.  First Friday Fairs will be held in the Commons. <Title>The Gigs and the Money: Grant Writing and Generating Opportunities for Artists</Title>

I discovered that, to make my work, I needed to find support and opportunities to present my work. I embarked on a painful learning process, making lots of mistakes. I want to share with you what I've learned over 30 years: principles and tools for writing simple, clear grants and for generating the gigs, shows, tours, and community events that fit your work. No bull, no fancy powerpoints, just real-world tools, artist to artist."<br>Andrew Simonet</p><p><br><strong>Limited attendance in-person workshop, sign up <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfAADdFZeNb9S3EP-vIKB-IyEydqzoc5WtZaYeuZ1opB4kKZg/viewform" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">here</a> to be placed on waiting list by February 9.</strong> You will receive an email confirmation with the location. </p><p><a href="https://www.andrewsimonet.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Andrew Simonet</a> is writer and choreographer in Philadelphia. From 1993 to 2013, he co-directed Headlong Dance Theater, creating dances like CELL (a journey for one audience member guided by your cell phone), and This Town is a Mystery (dances by four Philadelphia families in their homes). Andrew left Headlong to focus on writing fiction. His debut novel, Wilder, was published by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux in 2018 and his second novel, A Night Twice as Long, was published by FSG in 2021. Andrew has received a Pew Fellowship in the Arts, an Independence Fellowship in the Arts, a Bessie for Choreography at the NYC Dance and Performance Awards, and residencies at Yaddo, Ucross, Kyoto Art Center, Studios of Key West, Santa Fe Art Institute, and Hambidge. In 2006, Andrew founded <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/circa/events/149669/106ec/d694082204a1a04ff25a0af2a43f8112/web/link?link=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.artistsu.org%2F" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Artists U</a>, an incubator for helping artists make sustainable lives. All Artists U programs are artist-led, open source, and free for participants. Through workshops, convenings, and one-on-one planning sessions, he has worked directly with over 8,000 artists across all disciplines.
