Same-sex marriage continues to be a hotly debated and deeply divisive cultural issue in the US.
Recently in Maryland, a vote in the state legislature to legalize same-sex marriage was dropped at the last minute after two weeks of intense lobbying.

Advocates in favor of gay unions are vowing to make a strong push to get a vote in the 2012 legislative session.
