Cyclist and notable cancer-survivor Lance Armstrong is an international superstar.
He is a a seven time winner of the prestigious and grueling Tour de France road cycling race. His charitable foundation LiveStrong is expected to raise over $50 million this year to battle Cancer.
Now he is facing another grueling battle.
Ex-cycling teammate Tyler Hamilton claims he saw performance enhancing drugs in Armstrong’s refrigerator while competing for the Tour De France.
Hamilton made the accusations on last weeks episode of 60 Minutes.
He also claims that many others in the group of riders, known as a peloton, engaged themselves with drugs such as EPO, testosterone, and blood transfusions outside of training in the hopes of increasing their chances of winning:
[Armstrong] took what we all took…the majority of the peloton,”
2006 Tour de France champ Floyd Landis has also admitted to using performance enhancing drugs with Armstrong in his testimony last year. Landis was then stripped of his title.
Armstrong denies both allegations and countless others, reiterating that he has never failed one of his 500 drug tests. However, recent developments suggest that there may have been an effort by a Swiss laboratory to sweep a positive drug test from Armstrong under the table.
All of these allegations are being investigated by the local authorities, but Armstrong’s hometown seems to have heard enough about Armstrong’s illegal activities. NPR reported that local columnists in Austin, Texas are seeing more citizens doubting Armstrong then before. Kirk Bohls of the Austin-American Statesman reports:
Most of the email and response I’ve received has been very negative toward Lance Armstrong, and I wonder if some of the tide may have turned against him.”
