As usual the Economist has some delicious food for thought (although it appears America has had too much).
The data above looks at male obesity’s growth since 1980. The study from which the data is drawn suggests the increase is because by
2008 the rich world had itself expanded, bringing obesity to groups within countries that were previously considered poor, such as Brazil and South Africa. During that period, the prevalence rate of obesity among men doubled to nearly 10%.
